Ingenue -- CD

kd lang

1992 Rhino Records

Amazon.com essential recording

The album on which she officially gave up on Nashville and began singing torchy, adult-contemporary pop, Ingenue has been referred to by lang as her "stalker" album for its emphasis on songs about desire and obsession. Despite such onerous implications, the album is a charmer, thanks to lang's sincerity and passion and the smoldering arrangements of songs such as "Constant Craving," "The Mind of Love" and "Still Thrives This Love." The album's somewhat dark spirits are tempered by the campy "Miss Chatelaine," which lang has often performed live to the accompaniment of a Lawrence Welk-style bubble machine. With Ingenue, you can do the same in the comfort of your own home. --Daniel Durchholz

"Save Me" – 4:33
"The Mind of Love" – 3:48
"Miss Chatelaine" – 3:49
"Wash Me Clean" (Lang) – 3:17
"So It Shall Be" (Lang, Penny) – 4:30
"Still Thrives This Love" – 3:35
"Season of Hollow Soul" – 4:58
"Outside Myself" – 4:57
"Tears of Love's Recall" – 3:49
"Constant Craving" – 4:37

a review ~
"Rory Block grew up during the blues revival in the 1960's, when the works of artists such as Skip James, Mississippi John Hurt, and Robert Johnson were being rediscovered. She was influenced by the Delta sound and style of singing and High-Heeled Blues released in 1981, exemplifies her as a supreme interpreter of those classics, as well as her own compositions, solidly strumming her guitar with great aplomb."
"Block covers no less than three Robert Johnson songs. She does some intense strumming on his "Walkin' Blues" reflecting the travelling those bluesman had to do back then. Upon hearing "I've been mistreated and I don't mind if I die," I sigh and think, that's the blues right there."

topper says:
As so many of her albums do, Rory keeps the history of blues music alive.
(and liner notes tell the story behind the music)

A Twist of Jobim -- CD

Various Artists

1997 i.e. Music/Polygram

The debut release from the I.E. label (which is connected with Polygram) is an unusual multi-artist tribute to the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim. Some of his tunes are made funky (but in a melodic and tasteful way), while others become quiet (but still passionate) ballads. The treatments are all jazz-oriented, and there is plenty of solo space for the likes of guitarist Lee Ritenour (in one of his finest jazz efforts), pianists Dave Grusin and Alan Pasqua, altoist Eric Marienthal, bassist Christian McBride, and tenor saxophonist Ernie Watts. Plus, there are guest spots for Herbie Hancock (an excellent acoustic piano solo on "Stone Flower"), the sopranos of Art Porter (on "Dindi") and Steve Tavaglione, the Yellowjackets (who team up with Ritenour on "Mojave"), singer El DeBarge ("Dindi") and the vocal duo of Al Jarreau and Oleta Adams ("Waters of March" and a lightweight rendition of "The Girl from Ipanema"). Nearly every song holds one's interest, the melodies are celebrated, and the fresh interpretations contain more than their share of surprises. ~ Scott Yanow

Playin' Hooky -- CD

Bob James

1997 Warner Bros. Records

Take a breather! Try PLAYIN' HOOKY for a change!, October 13, 2002
By James R. Prater (Cleveland Tn.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Playin Hooky (Audio CD)

Bob James treats us to a "musical vacation" on this CD, his solo follow-up to RESTLESS. "Playing With Fire" is a new twist on a familliar melody by Chopin. "Mind Games" is radio-ready, featuring Bob at the Rhodes with Boney James (no relation--his real name is James Oppenheim). "The River Returns" features vocalisation by Bob's daughter Hilary. It bleeds into "Organza", which reminds me an awful lot of "Lotus Leaves". Bob reels us in with the funky "Hook, Line, And Sinker", featuring Oppenheim and a great horn section out front. "Glass Hearts" is a poignant tune, embodying the musical spirit of Jobim and Chopin. "Night Sky" is worthy of musing. New talent Rasheeda puts an orgasmic spin on the Gershwins' "Do It Again". "Love Is Where" features the East brothers Marcel and Nathan, and Rick Braun. "Are You Ready" is a sexually charged tune with some ingenious modulations and chords. True Bob James in every sense of the word!

4. Organza
5. Hook, Line & Sinker

Finally something new I've been looking for. Irish Metal. Que, Eluveitie. Been around for some time really. A friend of mine went to a concert earlier this year and this was one of the bands there. He got to meet them and said that they were a great group of people, I say people as apposed to guys as there's 2 girls in the band.

I find myself listening to their EARLY YEARS album a lot lately. Loving it.

If you're into heavy metal and Irish music, this is the perfect blend.

Just read that JJ has released an album of Duke Ellington standards, but with no horns, no swing, and some really unusual guest musicians (Steve Vai, Regina Jackson, Iggy Pop  ). Ordered.
Made me dig this one out, I had forgotten how good, and good-sounding this album is, w00t!! :music-listening:

Been rockin Gov't Muls all morning.

What's impressive (besides the music) is that this "package" was only $9.99. There are three CDs, each with its own photo book and liner notes, snapped into a very sturdy cardboard try-fold holder that fits into an equally sturdy sleeve. On top of everything else, the retention hubs are a solid rubber-like substance that almost seem molded into the cardboard back. I don't know how anyone is making money on this album. The packaging alone had to be $3.

That's friggin' awesome! But I'm nervous. If this is your first foray into R&B, I'm afraid you may not like it and may be unwilling to try it again. As much as I like this album, I'd say it's an acquired taste and definitely not novice material.

Is that Gretchen Mol in the center picture from the cd case?
I don't know for certain but I gotta say doubtful.

I'll dig through the liner notes and see if I can confirm that.

How is this one?

It's REALLY fantastic. I have all of Susan's stuff, she is my hero and one of my all-time favorite artists. She's an amazing little dynamite in concert - sparkly dress, sexy high heels, SHREDDING her guitar and wailing like nobody's business!
This album with her husband, Derek is complete blues musical deliciousness. All of the musicians are so top-notch and seasoned. The music is a bit more subdued than Susan's usual mix, but it is just so well done that it got under my skin immediately. Each time one of these songs pops up in my random play I instantly smile and say "yeah...that's the shit!"
I highly recommend this album!

Heeman - if you give this a listen and don't care for it, I will buy it from you! I've been considering buying it myself, just haven't gotten there yet!
