Longing In Their Hearts -- CD

Bonnie Raitt

By K. Parsons "Hailing from the mountaintop!" (Idyllwild, CA USA) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Longing in Their Hearts (Audio CD)

This is a tremendous CD... though definitely not as glossy and smooth as the ones that came after, or as rough and textured as those before. For some reason, even though there are a few songs I can do without, (I Sho Do comes to mind) songs like "Feeling of Falling", Cool Clear Water" and the title track have remained my favorite Bonnie songs since this CD came out.

There is a funky goove here... and enough attitude to show that Bonnie Raitt is no computer enhanced lip-synching pop diva powderpuff. No way - she's the REAL DEAL. Has been for so long I can't remember... and she still belts it out better than anyone. She's made a huge mark in a world that wasn't exactly welcoming to her at first... and this CD shows why. Virtuoso musicianship, a deadly groove, sultry, strong vocals and that sensation of, well... (hey - isn't that what music is all about!!!)~~~

"Longing" has that quality of imperfect genius that makes Bonnie Raitt's music so satisfying.

"Love Sneakin' up on You" (Little Jimmy Scott, Tom Snow) – 3:41
"Longing in Their Hearts" (Michael O'Keefe, Raitt) – 4:48
"You" (John Shanks, Bob Thiele, Tonio K.) – 4:27
"Cool, Clear Water" (Raitt) – 5:27
"Circle Dance" (Raitt) – 4:11
"I Sho Do" (Billy Always, Mabon "Teenie" Hodges) – 3:38
"Dimming of the Day" (Richard Thompson) – 3:39
"Feeling of Falling" (Raitt) – 6:17
"Steal Your Heart Away" (Paul Brady) – 5:44
"Storm Warning" (Terry Britten, Lea Maalfrid) – 4:31
"Hell to Pay" (Raitt) – 4:03
"Shadow of Doubt" (Gary Nicholson) – 4:26

The Hot Fives -- Volume 1 -- Remastered CD

Louis Armstrong

1988 Columbia Records

Recorded in Chicago, Illinois in 1925 & 1926. Includes liner notes by John Chilton.Digitally remastered by Frank Abbey.Armstrong's Hot Five recordings are a pinnacle of early jazz. A virtual blueprint for the future of the music, they capture the shift in emphasis from ensemble to soloist, and as such they represent both the death and the rebirth of the New Orleans sound. Hardly intended as a revolution, the Hot Fives were put together to perform novelty tunes and standard blues, and outside of one appearance at a party for record executives, the band was strictly a studio group. Armstrong brought together his closest musical associates, including his wife Lil Hardin on piano, New Orleans pal Kid Ory on trombone, and King Oliver band member Johnny Dodds on clarinet; the group played a number of Armstrong originals, such as the fantastic "Cornet Chop Suey" and "Gut Bucket Blues," as well as Kid Ory's classic "Muskrat Ramble" and Hardin's "Skid-Dat-De-Dat." All the elements that would make Armstrong a worldwide star are fully in evidence: his ebullient solos, his perfect tone, his ever-present humor, and his inimitable singing voice, including the earliest recording of Armstrong's scat-singing. And, by the way, on "Whosit," possibly the finest slide-whistle solo ever put down on wax.

Birth Of The Hot -- The Classic Chicago Red Hot Pepper Sessions -- Remastered CD

Jelly Roll Morton

1995/2009 Bluebird/RCA Victor Records

Amazon.com

Jelly Roll Morton was at a creative peak in Chicago in 1926 and '27, surrounded by first-rate fellow New Orleans musicians and with plenty of opportunities to record. Many of the musicians who contributed to Louis Armstrong's Hot Five and Hot Seven recordings appear here--trombonist Kid Ory, banjoist Johnny St. Cyr, clarinetist Johnny Dodds, and his drummer brother Baby Dodds--while George Mitchell contributes sterling cornet leads. Each track is a compressed masterpiece, a jigsaw puzzle of written composition, improvised ensembles, solos and duets, often with sound effects and bantering comic patter thrown in. "Black Bottom Stomp" and "The Chant" are brilliant examples of Morton's energized fusion of contrasting elements, while the piquant "Someday Sweetheart," with its combination of violins, guitar, and Omer Simeon's bass clarinet, demonstrates Morton's inventiveness as an orchestrator. From low humor to high mimicry, Morton was an artist of ebullient spirit who brought the whole of his experience to the recording studio: the car horn of "Sidewalk Blues," the forced laughter of "Hyena Stomp," and the barnyard vocals of "Billy Goat Stomp." By contrast, the final Chicago session includes compact trio performances of "Wolverine Blues" and "Mr. Jelly Lord" by Morton and the Dodds brothers that are refined intersections of ragtime and jazz improvisation. --Stuart Broomer

Classic Tenors -- Remastered CD

Coleman Hawkins - Lester Young

1989 Columbia Special Products

Three Sessions From 1943 Featuring the Hawk and Pres
November 27, 2011
By karlojazz
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase

I am in total agreement with the other reviewer that this is an excellent CD, but one need not avoid it thinking that it's too expensive. Very good used CDs can be purchased at a fairly low price through Amazon.com. Fans of both Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young will be pleased with these recordings from December 1943. What makes many of the selections very special is the high quality of the musicians in the groups playing behind the two stars. Some detailed information about the tracks and the personnel might be helpful to potential listeners:

December 23, 1943:

Crazy Rhythm
Get Happy
Sweet Lorraine
The Man I Love

Personnel: Coleman Hawkins, tenor sax, Eddie Heywood, piano, Oscar Pettiford, bass, and Shelly Manne, drums

December 8, 1943:

Voodte
Hawkins' Barrel House
How Deep is the Ocean?
Stumpy

Personnel: Coleman Hawkins, tenor sax, Bill Coleman, trumpet, Andy Fitzgerald, clarinet, Ellis Larkins, piano, Al Casey, guitar, Oscar Pettiford, bass, and Shelly Manne, drums

December 21, 1943:

I Got Rhythm
I'm Fer It Too
Linger Awhile
Hello Babe

Personnel: Lester Young, tenor sax, Bill Coleman, trumpet, Dickie Wells, trombone, Ellis Larkins, piano, Freddie Greene, guitar, Al Hall, bass, and Jo Jones, drums

Most of these tunes are rather well-known standards, but several were composed by the players themselves and should be noted. Hawkins' three contributions are Voodte, Stumpy, and Hawkins' Barrel House. Dickie Wells wrote Hello Babe and I'm Fer It Too.

There are many highlights throughout these dozen tracks, but for this reviewer several bear mentioning here: the piano and bass introductions to The Man I Love by Heywood and Pettiford are superb as are the trumpet and trombone solos on I'm Fer It Too by Coleman and Wells. And the rollicking Hawkins' Barrel House features some exciting passages by Fitzgerald on clarinet and by Coleman again on trumpet.

This is an excellent collection of songs played by two masters of the tenor sax and supported by three groups full of first-rate sidemen. Fans of both Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young should add this CD to their collection. Very highly recommended.

1. The Man I Love
2. Sweet Lorraine
3. Get Happy
4. Crazy Rhythm
5. How Deep Is The Ocean?
6. Voodte
7. Hello Babe
8. Linger Awhile
9. I Got Rhythm
10. I'm Fer It Too
11. Hawkins' Barrel House
12. Stumpy

A Charlie Brown Christmas - SACD

Vince Guaraldi Trio

1965/2000 Fantasy Records

Amazon.com

The first time you listen to this disc you will undoubtedly be transported directly back to your childhood. Charles Schulz's Peanuts characters will go toe-tapping and funky-dancing through your mind's eye. Play it a few more times, though (ignoring the dialogue snippets, if you can), and you will begin to truly revel in Guaraldi's wonderful, humorous, deep piano playing. You'll hear why he's such an influence on new age ivory tickler George Winston, but you'll also realize that Winston's holiday music never quite sparkles with the underlying passion, and humor, that twinkles in these grooves. Buy it for the nostalgia--keep it because it will remain one of the most enchanting albums in your holiday collection. --Michael Ruby

Unreleased Masters: London The Great Concerts - Jan. 23, 1963 -- CD

Duke Ellington

1993 MusicMasters Jazz

Elegant Jazz September 28, 2009
By James E. Scalise
Format:Audio CD

The sophistication and class of Dukes' great band in action before an audience in January, 1963. Everyone is bright and shiny on this one. Cootie Williams, Cat Anderson, Johnny Hodges and Paul Gonsalves add their personal touches. Johnny just kills me. The concert moves along like a well oiled machine with Duke changing directions and moods and Sam Woodyard propelling the band along the way. Swedish trumpeter Rolf Erickson gets a little action on a couple of tunes. "Harlem" takes you on a mental trip with all the stops. "Petal" features the simple beauty of Duke alone at the piano. The band roars as a unit to close on "Rockin'" with Cat Anderson leading them out.

Through no fault of his own, Duke was over recorded. A lot of new stuff has been released since his death in 1974. I think he would have approved of this one.

This is a great record, contemporary jazz meets contemporary gospel.
Ramsey Lewis invites a gospel choir to perform with him live and it's a really good one with great singers/musicians.
The songs are mostly unknown for me expect "Oh happy day" but they sounds really good with a "jazzy touch" from Ramsey's piano!
If you're into booth gospel and contemporary/classic jazz this a record for you!
Buy it and you won't be diassapointed!

1. Oh Happy Day
2. Sunday Strut
3. Bless Me (Prayer Of Jabez)
4. Thoughts And Reflections
5. Pass Me Not
6. Trees
7. Work It Out

Silent Night, Holy Night -- CD

Mahalia Jackson

1992 Sony Music Special Products

A treasure in modest trappings
December 25, 2007
By Phil S.
Format:Audio CD

What a surprise to find this collection available at a booksellers' chain, and for well under $10.00!
As a James Brown fan, and "Sweet Little Baby Boy" enthusiast, I was thrilled to note the album closer song title, which naturally I presume is the reference disc for the 1966 JB entry.
Yes, "Sweet Little Jesus Boy" is here, and although it's sonic similarity is not immediately apparent, it surely is another golden ornament for the holiday fixture.
Mahalia Jackson is a brilliant singer, no doubt, and her mesmerizing voice is at home with something "commmercial" like "White Christmas", or something more "traditional", like "Silent Night, Holy Night". The Gospel "Go Tell It On The Mountain", and the Inspirational "I Wonder As I Wander" are incandescent all year 'round.
"No Room At The Inn", is a medium tempo number, new to me, that even with the spare support, builds and builds musically through Mahalia's commanding technique.
As a Special Product, it can be expected that this reissue does not feature liner notes, or even writers' credits, so this CD might not suit the historian/collector. Though what is not visible is not the thing here.

1. Silent Night, Holy Night
2. No Room At The Inn
3. Oh Little Town Of Bethlehem
4. The Holy Babe
5. Joy To The World
6. O Come, All Ye Faithful (Adeste Fideles)
7. Go Tell It On The Mountain
8. White Christmas
9. I Wonder As I Wander
10. Sweet Little Jesus Boy

All The Things We Are -- CD

Dave Brubeck

1976/1990 Atlantic Records

Personnel: Dave Brubeck (piano); Anthony Braxton, Lee Konitz (alto saxophone); Jack Six (bass); Alan Dawson, Roy Haynes (drums).
Recorded at C.I. Studios, New York on July 17, 1973 and October 3, 1974. Includes liner notes by Michael Cuscuna.

Demonstrating the innovative pianist's wide musical range, this early-1970s set features Dave Brubeck in a variety of settings, from a traditional combo featuring the West Coast saxophonist Lee Konitz on "Like Someone in Love," to the more experimental group of "In Your Own Sweet Way," featuring the avant-garde saxophonist Anthony Braxton demonstrating his command of more conventional jazz idioms. The album's centerpiece is an extended medley of delicate, lyrical improvisations on five pieces by the songwriter Jimmy Van Heusen.

Track Listing

1. Like Someone in Love
2. In Your Own Sweet Way
3. All the Things You Are
4. Jimmy Van Heusen Medley: Deep In A Dream / Like Someone In Love / Here's That Rainy Day / Polka Dots And Moonbeams / It Could Happen To You
