Pink Floyd Pulse:

This took many, many years to finally come out on DVD, I'll probably be in an old folks home by the time it comes out on BD.

Fortunately, this DVD looks and sounds GREAT! pic's in 3:4, but the color and sharpness are really nice, I have no complaints. The stage is impressive, big half-circle with a full-circle projection screen in the top, really impressive. :text-bravo: :text-bravo: :text-bravo:

I would love to find "Pulse" used and inexpensive! :handgestures-thumbup:

Kind of Blue -- CD

Miles Davis

1959/1997 Columbia/Legacy

Amazon.com essential recording

This is the one jazz record owned by people who don't listen to jazz, and with good reason. The band itself is extraordinary (proof of Miles Davis's masterful casting skills, if not of God's existence), listing John Coltrane and Julian "Cannonball" Adderley on saxophones, Bill Evans (or, on "Freddie Freeloader," Wynton Kelly) on piano, and the crack rhythm unit of Paul Chambers on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums. Coltrane's astringency on tenor is counterpoised to Adderley's funky self on alto, with Davis moderating between them as Bill Evans conjures up a still lake of sound on which they walk. Meanwhile, the rhythm partnership of Cobb and Chambers is prepared to click off time until eternity. It was the key recording of what became modal jazz, a music free of the fixed harmonies and forms of pop songs. In Davis's men's hands it was a weightless music, but one that refused to fade into the background. In retrospect every note seems perfect, and each piece moves inexorably towards its destiny. --John Szwed

1. "So What" – 9:22
2. "Freddie Freeloader" – 9:46
3. "Blue in Green" – 5:37
4. "All Blues" – 11:33
5. "Flamenco Sketches" – 9:26

Blue Train -- SACD

John Coltrane

1957/2003 Blue Note Records

Worth The Upgrade, December 31, 2003

By Thomas Shea (Seattle, WA United States)
(REAL NAME)

This review is from: Blue Train (SACD Hybrid) (Audio CD)

Since anyone considering buying this probably knows what a great album it is, I am writing this simply to address the Hybrid SACD version of Blue Train. This is one of those albums that I, personally, have spent the money to upgrade 3 times (it's THAT good).

While I can't speak for the recent RVG Series reissue, I can say that this version sounds considerably better than the 1996 reissue, The Ultimate Blue Train--bass is richer, drums crisper and overall live feel of the recording is unprecedented. If are considering buying the RVG remaster, why not spend a few dollars more and get this Hybrid SACD since it plays in both Super Audio and regulars CD players. It's definitely worth the investment.

Time Out -- CD

The Dave Brubeck Quartet

1959/1997 Columbia/Legacy

Amazon.com essential recording

Boasting the first jazz instrumental to sell a million copies, the Paul Desmond-penned "Take Five," Time Out captures the celebrated jazz quartet at the height of both its popularity and its powers. Recorded in 1959, the album combines superb performances by pianist Brubeck, alto saxophonist Desmond, drummer Joe Morrello and bassist Gene Wright. Along with "Take Five," the album features another one of the group's signature compositions, "Blue Rondo a la Turk." Though influenced by the West Coast-cool school, Brubeck's greatest interest and contribution to jazz was the use of irregular meters in composition, which he did with great flair. Much of the band's appeal is due to Desmond, whose airy tone and fluid attack often carried the band's already strong performances to another level. Together, he and Brubeck proved one of the most potent pairings of the era. --Fred Goodman

1. "Blue Rondo à la Turk" – 6:44
2. "Strange Meadow Lark" – 7:22
3. "Take Five" – 5:24

2. "Kathy's Waltz" – 4:48

Happy Trails -- CD

QuickSilver Messenger Service

1969/1994 Capitol Records

The Definitive QMS, August 8, 2004
By C. Thwaites (USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)

This review is from: Happy Trails (Audio CD)

This is a superlative example of west coast, jam innovation from the late 60s. Hard to believe this is from 1968 and pre-dates some of the best Dead, Hendrix guitar feedback exercises. The 25 min version of Bo Diddely's Who Do You Love highlights the album along with a shorter but no less startling Mona. This is a must if you want to explore the Dead around that time. John Cippolina is in full force. Check him out too on the recently released Grateful Dead. Closing of Winterland, where he leads a 20 min "Not Fade Away".
Side A

1. "Who Do You Love - Part 1" – 3:32 (McDaniel)

4. "How You Love" – 2:45 (Cipollina)
5. "Which Do You Love" – 1:49 (Freiberg)
6. "Who Do You Love - Part 2" – 5:51 (McDaniel)

Side B

1. "Mona" – 7:01 (McDaniel)
2. "Maiden of the Cancer Moon" – 2:54 (Duncan)
3. "Calvary" – 13:31 (Duncan)
4. "Happy Trails" – 1:29 (Evans)

Storms of Life -- CD

Randy Travis

1986 Warner Bros. Records

Amazon.com essential recording

When Storms of Life's singles were climbing the charts in 1986, they sounded like a miracle. After all, at the time, Randy Travis was just about the only young exemplar of traditional country you could hear on the radio. Travis's first hits ("1982," "On the Other Hand," "Diggin' Up Bones") helped put twang, briefly, back in the saddle, inspiring what was quickly dubbed the new traditionalist movement. So, yeah, this is an important album, but what's really important here is Travis's beautifully expressive and quivering baritone. On the bridge of "No Place Like Home," he gets down on his knees and begs his wife to take him back in--and, with that voice, it's no wonder he pulls it off. --David Cantwell

1. "On the Other Hand" (Paul Overstreet, Don Schlitz) - 3:05
2. "The Storms of Life" (Max D. Barnes, Troy Seals) - 2:43
3. "My Heart Cracked (But It Did Not Break)" (Ronny Scaife, Don Singleton, Phil Thomas) - 2:18
4. "Diggin' Up Bones" (Al Gore, Overstreet, Nat Stuckey) - 2:58
5. "No Place Like Home" (Overstreet) - 4:06
6. "1982" (Buddy Blackmon, Vip Vipperman) - 2:58
7. "Send My Body" (Randy Travis) - 2:59
8. "Messin' with My Mind" (Joseph Allen, Charlie Williams) - 3:06
9. "Reasons I Cheat" (Travis) - 4:20
10. "There'll Always Be a Honky Tonk Somewhere" (Steve Clark, Johnny MacRae) - 3:15

If There Was A Way -- CD

Dwight Yoakam

2008 Rhino Records

Amazon.com essential recording

Dwight Yoakam's fourth studio album was his most muscular yet. Alongside the overtly rocking cuts, his honky-tonkers also kicked harder than anywhere in his catalog; on top of all this, he gave his loosest, most assured-sounding vocal performances to date. That he cowrote one of the disc's biggest singles, "It Only Hurts When I Cry," with Roger Miller makes perfect sense; Yoakam and Miller shared an ambivalently loving attitude toward the country-music establishment. Yoakam's insistence on going his own way would lead to even more indelible long-players, but If There Was a Way remains among his most impressive. --Rickey Wright

1. "The Distance Between You and Me" – 2:41
2. "The Heart That You Own" – 3:08
3. "Takes a Lot to Rock You" – 2:59
4. "Nothing's Changed Here" (Dwight Yoakam, Kostas) – 2:56
5. "Sad, Sad Music" – 3:53
6. "Since I Started Drinkin' Again" – 3:52
7. "If There Was a Way" – 2:54
8. "Turn It On, Turn It Up, Turn Me Loose" (Kostas, Wayland Patton) – 3:23
9. "It Only Hurts When I Cry" (Yoakam, Roger Miller) – 2:33
10. "Send a Message to My Heart" (Kostas, Kathy Louvin) – 3:15
* duet with Patty Loveless
11. "I Don't Need It Done" (John Sieger) – 4:44
12. "You're the One" – 3:57
13. "Dangerous Man" – 4:15
14. "Let's Work Together" (Wilbert Harrison) – 3:33

My choices of music are really more Divine intervention, as most of the time I don't know what's coming next. I just go wit da flo.......

Nina Simone's Finest Hour -- CD :text-bravo:

Nina Simone

2000 Verve Records
Too unique for words, September 10, 2004
By moose_of_many_waters (Pt. Reyes Station, CA United States)
(VINE VOICE)

This review is from: Nina Simone's Finest Hour (Audio CD)

Prickly with a voice that grates, there's nothing pretty about the music of Nina Simone. But her phrasing and the all consuming emotion that she gives to the songs makes her own them. Pour yourself a Scotch or two and this album will envelop you like smoke in an old bar when it's cold and dark outside.

The choice of songs here has been made by a singer, and if you like art in your interpretations of standards, then this album is meant for you. It's meant for detailed listening. It's moody as moody can be and definitely not for those who get their thrills from the easy smooth sounds of Norah Jones. But if you like singing with emotion and attitude, well it doesn't get any better than Nina. And this collection is very representative of all that Nina could do.
