This review is from: Joan Armatrading (Audio CD)

I was living in the great city of Portland, Oregon and one day I heard "Love and Affection" on the radio. It only took one time and I was off to the record store. I remember well the first time I listened to the entire album... It was a unique experience. I knew that I had made a new discovery. Joan Armatrading is an incredible singer/songwriter/musician. I've loved many of her works since and have nearly her entire catalog but none will ever match this effort. To this day...I don't think I will ever hear a song that expresses what it should always be like to find someone new and discover whether or not they are that one and only special someone that we all are looking for like "Love and Affection" does. But, it's not the only one worth mention.... "Water With The Wine", "Down to Zero" and "Save Me" are also among the many great cuts here. A must for any record collection.

1. "Down to Zero" – 3:51
2. "Help Yourself" – 4:04
3. "Water With the Wine" – 2:48
4. "Love and Affection" – 4:28
5. "Save Me" – 3:35
6. "Join the Boys" – 4:48
7. "People" – 3:30
8. "Somebody Who Loves You" – 3:33
9. "Like Fire" – 5:12
10. "Tall in the Saddle" – 5:43

Time After Time -- CD

Etta James

1995 Private Music

"I've been through it all," Etta James sings with conviction on "Don't Go To Strangers." "I'm an old hand," she moans, "and I'll understand if you go." With her big, lived-in voice, Etta James invites the listener to come on in and share some experiences best appreciated through an intermediary with worldly wisdom to come back alive and interpret things for those of us who've led more sheltered lives. By the end of this particular performance, Etta has discarded the polite conventions of the song and reached down to find some joy and pain that most assuredly was not gleaned second-hand.
TIME AFTER TIME reprises the winning formula that made the legendary vocalist's ascent into the world of Billie Holiday on MYSTERY LADY a Grammy Award winner. One of the grand dames of R&B and the blues, Etta James' performances always conveyed a palpable element of danger and rage, as if at any second things might get uncomfortably...real. So don't sit too close if you can't take the heat--bring your whole being or don't bother to show.
Which is the quality that makes this autobiographical synthesis of sophisticated jazz and low-down blues on TIME AFTER TIME so authentic. While these songs have been done a thousand times before, Etta James is such a master dramatist, she's able to interpret them as something fresh and new. On "The Nearness Of You" she practically stutters over the intro and outro, conveying a sense of expectation and longing that reaches fruition in Herman Riley's earthy tenor confession, and her final rejection of those "soft lights." Look out.

Linda Ronstadt & The Nelson Riddle Orchestra

Ronstadt & Riddle: How Can You Go Wrong?, December 3, 2003
By Rebecca*rhapsodyinblue* (CA USA) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE) (TOP 1000 REVIEWER)

This review is from: What's New (Audio CD)

I was never a fan of Linda Ronstadt until she recorded "What's New," "Lush Life" and "For Sentimental Reasons." Nelson Riddle did an excellent job in bringing out the very best of Linda Ronstadt with a new repertoire of ageless and romantic standards. She did very outstanding performances and I believe that she's worthy to be called a versatile singer.

Her heartfelt renditions of George and Ira Gershwin's classics," I've Got A Crush On You" and "Someone To Watch Over Me," are my very favorites. I also like her superb interpretation of Irving Berlin's "What'll I Do?" She delivers these songs with intensity and full of emotions. Very impressive! Her voice is a perfect match for these romantic classics.

This CD is a keeper and you will enjoy listening to it now and forever!

1. "What's New?" (Johnny Burke, Bob Haggart) - 3:55
2. "I've Got a Crush on You" (George Gershwin, Ira Gershwin) - 3:28
3. "Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out to Dry" (Sammy Cahn, Jule Styne) - 4:13
4. "Crazy He Calls Me" (Carl Sigman, Sidney Keith Russell) - 3:33
5. "Someone to Watch Over Me" (G. Gershwin, I. Gershwin) - 4:09
6. "I Don't Stand a Ghost of a Chance with You" (Bing Crosby, Ned Washington, Victor Young) - 4:06
7. "What'll I Do" (Irving Berlin) - 4:06
8. "Lover Man (Oh Where Can You Be?)" (Jimmy Davis, Jimmy Sherman, Roger "Ram" Ramirez) - 4:18
9. "Goodbye" (Gordon Jenkins) - 4:47

Headbanger mood tonight, I guess...
Boy, this video really sucks!
One of the two guitarists must've mixed the final print, that's all you can hear. The bass and drums are pretty subdued, and you really can't hear the lead vocalist at all.
damn guitar players. :violence-torch:

All I Intended To Be -- CD

Emmylou Harris

2008 Nonesuch Records

Amazon.co.uk
Emmylou Harris has always had a way with woe. On All I Intended To Be, she seems more maudlin than ever as she sings her way through songs about loss, heartbreak, even the odd funeral. Of course, this is the kind of material Harris has always been comfortable with, but as her career and years advance gracefully, so her gliding soprano seems to breathe ever more refinement and soul into her material. All I Intended To Be has been produced by Brian Ahern, her former husband and the man behind her first 11 albums--another reason the album sounds so comfortable and accomplished. Joined by a virtuoso set of players including keyboardist Glen Hardin and multi-instrumentalist Stuart Duncan, plus vocalists Vince Gill, Buddy Miller, and Dolly Parton, Harris blends a handpicked selection of cover versions with her own material. Tracy Chapman's "All That You Have Is Your Soul" gets a honeyed reworking, as does Merle Haggard's "Kern River" and Mark Germino's "Broken Man's Lament". Billy Joe Shaver's "Old Five" and "Dimers Like Me" both get respectfully and sublimely covered too. But her own songs--in particular "Sailing Round the Room" and "Gold"--stand up well to these evergreens. An eclectic and profound set, All I Intended To Be is also one of Harris’ best in recent years.--Danny McKenna

Pete Seeger's Greatest Hits -- CD

Pete Seeger

2002 Sony Music

Amazon.com

Pete Seeger's recording career covers more than 60 years, so a single-CD collection is bound to leave out more than a few worthy songs. But the 16 selections on Pete Seeger's Greatest Hits include indispensable Seeger-composed classics like "Turn! Turn! Turn!," "Bells of Rhymney," and an abbreviated a cappella version of "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?" Also included are songs Seeger popularized, such as "Wimoweh," which he learned from Solomon Linda's original South African recording in the 1940s, and "Guantanamera," which he picked up from some children at a Catskills summer camp where he was singing. All of the performances are drawn from his 1960s tenure at Columbia Records--only the first 12 tracks were included on the original 1967 package--and include both studio and live recordings. This CD features only a small fraction of the songs that could legitimately be called Seeger's greatest hits, but because most of these selections are so important to his career, this set can be thought of as the greatest of his greatest hits. --Michael Simmons

Peter, Paul and Mary

1964/1990 Warner Bros. Records

In a manner that their studio albums never could, Peter, Paul & Mary's live performances indicate much of what shot the trio to fame and influence during the folk revival. They were witty, sincere, and engaging entertainers, with strong, smooth voices and a smart sense of vocal dynamics. This record, originally released in 1964, and compiled from various venues, shows the trio at the top of their stylized game, both as individual performers and as a unit. Material includes the opener "Times They Are A-Changin'" and spirituals "Rock My Soul" and "Jesus Met the Woman," as well as the familiar "500 Miles" and "If I Had a Hammer." --Roy Francis Kasten

A Message From The People -- CD

Ray Charles

1972/2009 Concord Records

It was 1972, the turbulent ‘60s were winding down, and the music world was about to fork off in several directions: the soft rock of James Taylor and Carole King, the outlaw country of Waylon and Willie and soon . . . Disco.

America was on people’s minds: Don McLean with “American Pie” and there was even a band named America. Our nation was at war in Vietnam; we had landed on the moon. African-Americans were emboldened and encouraged by the progress they were achieving. The album A Message From the People, produced by Ray and recorded at his RPM International Studio, contained a song that did not chart at the time, but went on to become one of his best loved recordings: “America the Beautiful.” He would perform it countless times on TV and in live concert for the rest of his life.

“Mr. Charles wanted A Message From the People to include 'America the Beautiful' because of his tremendous love for our country,” stated Valerie Ervin, President of the Ray Charles Foundation. “Throughout his career he performed 'America' at a Super Bowl, a World Series game and for seven U.S. Presidents,” she added.

On May 5th, Concord Records will reissue, in its entirety, this landmark album for the first time on CD and digital download as part of its extensive reissue program of Ray Charles’s post-1960 catalog which, as part of his deal with ABC-Paramount Records, was owned and controlled by Ray himself. A Message From the People is the first in a series of albums to be reissued by Concord, which will include his classics Modern Sounds in Country & Western Music, Volumes 1 and 2; The Genius Hits the Road and Genius + Soul = Jazz, among others. For A Message From the People, Ray chose some of the world’s finest musicians including Freddie Hubbard, Ray Brown and Jean “Toots” Thielemans. The charts were written by his old friends Quincy Jones and Sid Feller, plus TV soundtrack meister Mike Post.

The songs Ray selected include “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” also known as the Black National Anthem; Dion DiMucci’s hit, “Abraham, Martin and John”; “Stevie Wonder’s plea for brotherly love, “Heaven Help Us All”; “John Denver’s loving ode to America’s heartland, “Take Me Home, Country Roads”; and Melanie’s “Look What They’ve Done To My Song, Ma,” which was also a hit single for Ray. Ray even came up with the idea for the album’s cover featuring the faces of Abe Lincoln, Dr. Martin Luther King and Jack and Bobby Kennedy, and commissioned artist Al Willis to bring it to fruition.

1. Lift Every Voice and Sing
2. Seems Like I Gotta Go Wrong
3. Heaven Help Us All
4. There'll Be No Peace Without All Men As One
5. Hey Mister
6. What Have They Done to My Song
