The Tide -- CD

Lucy Kaplansky

1994 Red House Records

Charlie Giordano (accordion); Michael Visceglia, Roly Salley (bass guitar); Kenneth Blevins, Frank Velardi (percussion); Shawn Colvin (background vocals).

After over a decade off and on, Lucy Kaplansky, one of the primary support singer and interpreters of New York's Greenwich Village scene, has released her debut album. It contains three of her own songs and other classics from contemporary songwriters. Highlights are Tom Russell/Greg Trooper's "The Heart," and Bill Morrissey's "Texas Blues," and Robin Batteau's "Guinevere." She also makes classics her own with Sting's "Secret Journey" and Richard Thompson's "When I Get to the Border." Produced by Shawn Colvin, this is a warm, relaxed-sounding set that allows Kaplansky's individual and great singing to cut through. Kaplansky is a terrific interpreter blessed with a great voice, unlike anyone else. ~ Richard Meyer

2. "When I Get to the Border" (Richard Thompson)– 2:57

Diatonis - "Dark Edges" - DVD-Audio 5.1 Surround
(Edit: I think it's actually just 5.0---no dedicated subwoofer channel)

51HJ2pNSL8L._SS500_.jpg

It's ambient music... or perhaps more accurately it's ambient soundscapes. It's interesting, but I've heard other ambient music that I like better. There's a lot of repetition and there isn't anything much in the way of typical song structure.

Still... you can't beat FREE.

You can download a 5.0 surround version of the album and see if you like it at all. The link to the ISO image of "Dark Edges" is on his website. Just download and burn the ISO image to a DVD. (Note: a DVD-Audio player is required to hear the sounds.) There are also a couple of DTS WAV files that you can also download and burn to a "DTS-CD" (different songs than what is on "Dark Edges", btw.)

*Funk Beyond The Call of Duty* -- CD

Johnny Guitar Watson

1977/1994 Collectables Records

Funking above and beyond the call of duty, October 5, 2000
By aL (Melbourne, Australia) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Funk Beyond the Call of Duty (Audio CD)

Hot on the heels of the success of his previous two albums (they both went gold), Johnny 'Guitar' Watson dropped another 70's funk classic. I'd heard this wasn't as good as the previous two but I'd say its my favourite Johnny 'Guitar' Watson cd so far, there are more grooves on this one and less ballads. Watson wrote , preformed, and produced, this and played all the instruments except for drums and horns. For fans of 70's funk music that want an introduction to one of the genre's lesser known master's, 'Funk Beyond the Call of Duty' is the perfect introduction. After all, this is: FUNK BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY.

Track Listing
1. Funk Beyond the Call of Duty
2. It's About the Dollar Bill
3. Give Me My Love
4. It's a *** Shame
5. I'm Gonna Get You Baby
6. Barn Door
7. Love That Will Not Die

Creedence Gold -- CD

Creedence Clearwater Revival

1991 Fantasy Records

Creedence Gold is a collection of Creedence Clearwater Revival's hit singles. Unfortunately, the album is a little too small to meet anybody's needs. A mere eight tracks are featured on Creedence Gold. Admittedly, these are eight tracks of amazing quality, but those looking for a more thorough collection will be pleased with the much more in-depth Chronicle, Vol. 1. Creedence Gold shows off the musical talent involved in the band. The 11-plus-minute "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" is a fine showcase for Creedence's lead guitar styling, while "Born on the Bayou" is a fine sampler of how the band worked as a unit. By no means is Creedence Gold a bad album. Indeed, the eight tracks featured are eight of the best moments in their respective genres.

Side 1

1. "Proud Mary"
2. "Down on the Corner"
3. "Bad Moon Rising"
4. "I Heard it Through the Grapevine" (Norman Whitfield, Barrett Strong)

Side 2

1. "The Midnight Special" (Traditional)
2. "Have You Ever Seen the Rain"
3. "Born on the Bayou"
4. "Susie Q" (Eleanor Broadwater, Dale Hawkins, Stanley Lewis)

Well, you want to know all of my secrets, huh?

I scour the internet for the info. Amazon, Google, CDUniverse,, Allmusic.com, Ebay, etc. It usually takes 2 or 3 websites for me to gather all the info I post for 1 album.

Often, if I borrow (read:Steal) the picture from a blog or review and some music sites, they change the Image Location, so people like you (read:me) won't "Hot Link" them. Which apparently is what happened to you and has happened to me many times.

For the Album Art I try to get it from amazon or CDUniverse, as they don't "move" their pictures locations.

It is really nice having you posting in this section. I love to see what people are listening too. Especially when they have Good Taste in music and by your "Pat Travers" post, I think we're going to get along just fine!! :handgestures-thumbup:

EDIT: I should add, I like seeing what EVERYONE is listening to, whether I am familiar with the Artist or not. I find a lot of "new to me" music from all of you!

On and On -- CD

Jack Johnson

2003 Brushfire Records

Amazon.com

Jack Johnson has found himself a groove. Indeed, the Hawaiian surfing champion turned alternative pop-folk star really hasn't changed things one iota for his sophomore release. Fans of Brushfire Fairytales should be delighted with the results. The groove is a mellow one--most of the 16 tracks here are semi-acoustic--and that easy-going spirit filters into Johnson's lyrical philosophies. "What will be will be / And so it goes" he sings on "Times Like These," the opening track. Thankfully, Johnson is never too mellow, and there's a "Don't worry, be happy" vibe to most of his music. "The Horizon Has Been Defeated" even has a pseudo-reggae feel to it. Although classified as an alternative musician, the singer-songwriter's compositions owe much to past hits. "Traffic in the Sky" is reminiscent of Jim Croce's "Operator" and Looking Glass's one-hit-wonder, "Brandy." On the splendid "Taylor," Johnson sounds an awful lot like Donovan. And "By The Way" recalls the Lovin' Spoonful. -- Bill Holdship

1. "Times Like These" – 2:22
2. "The Horizon Has Been Defeated" – 2:33
3. "Traffic in the Sky" – 2:50
4. "Taylor" – 3:59
5. "Gone" – 2:10
6. "Cupid" – 1:05
7. "Wasting Time" (Johnson, Adam Topol, Merlo Podlewski) – 3:50
8. "Holes to Heaven" – 2:54
9. "Dreams Be Dreams" – 2:12
10. "Tomorrow Morning" – 2:50
11. "Fall Line" – 1:35
12. "Cookie Jar" – 2:57

14. "Cocoon" – 4:10
15. "Mediocre Bad Guys" – 3:00
16. "Symbol in My Driveway" – 2:50

Heeman, I usually hot-link images too, and try to remember to hit the "Preview" button to see if the pic shows up. That works "most" of the time...

We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things. -- CD

Jason Mraz

2008 Atlantic Records

Amazon.co.uk

Since 2002’s jaunty Waiting for My Rocket to Come, Jason Mraz has developed into a more mature, well-rounded pop artist. We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things is his most multi-dimensional work yet, covering everything from groove-based material to ballads. While tracks such as "Make It Mine" and "Butterfly" refer back to the catchy style of previous albums, there are many other styles and textures on display here. His duet with Colbie Caillat, "Lucky," for example, explores his folkish, acoustic side, as does the compelling "Details in the Fabric," both of which are excellent songs. Mraz gets a little more experimental on "Coyotes," which toys with a clubby electronica and strangely seems to work, and on "The Dynamo of Volition" for which he employs a hectic, rapping-style of vocal over a typically contagious rhythm. His ballads, such as "Love For A Child", "If It Kills Me" and "Beautiful Mess" (these last two saved for the end) show a more sensitive side and even when his lyrics are occasionally clumsy, Mraz manages to make his point in an emotive way. Easy-going and sunny, but with laudable elements of depth and innovation, this is Mraz at his best so far.--Danny McKenna

1. "Make It Mine" Jason Mraz 3:08
2. "I'm Yours" Jason Mraz 4:03
3. "Lucky" (feat. Colbie Caillat) Jason Mraz, Colbie Caillat, Timothy Fagan 3:09

Beneath The Velvet Sun -- CD

Shawn Mullins

2000 Sony Music

A Polished Shawn Mullins, October 28, 2000
By A Customer

The return of Shawn Mullins after a 2-year recording break brings a more polished, pop, and a definitely more corporate Shawn trying to reach a broader audience. Is this another Soul's Core? - no, there is no Shimmer or Twin Rocks Oregon. Is this an Eggshells? - no, there is no Joshua or Where's Johnny. But make no mistake of it - this CD has unique and strong qualities and exhibits some potential classics in "North on 95", "Valentine" and the catchy "I Know" (Shelby Lynn on background vocals-wow!). The pop exists in the single "Everywhere I Go" and "Up All Night" (why they failed to have the jazzy/blues ending carry on longer is too bad) - both solid strong top 40 type tunes. "We Run" is a strong gospel like powerful ballad written with his wife and "Santa Fe" actually sounds like late 1970's Eagles revisted - who has ever managed that? In any event, this CD is the next step - in the right direction - for an extremely talented singer, songwriter capable of something innovative with every new recording.

1. Up All Night
2. Everywhere I Go
3. Amy's Eyes
4. Somethin' To Believe In
5. Valentine
6. Lonesome, I Know You Too Well
7. I Know
8. We Run
9. North On 95
10. Yellow Dog Song
11. Sante Fe
12. Hold
13. Time
