Why no love for Chicago?

I've bought a couple of their cd's lately, and I don't remember anybody ever talking about them here. Rock band with horns, whats not to love, although their early 80's stuff can be too sappy at times.

I LOVE them. Early stuff and later sappy stuff.
That's just amazing music. Well crafted, well performed.

I've always loved Chicago, though not everything they released was great. They started out amazing and slowly turned into pretty damn good with moments of genius.

I thought you meant the city and though not the worst I could have given a few reasons.

#1 being I have a cousin that lives there that I detest.

I like the band have a Greatest hits CD.

Aw, mzpro5, that's too bad about the cousin, because the City of Chicago is FANTASTIC!!!! It's one of my favorite cities to visit. I like it better than NYC.

Be careful they are currently in the middle of a murder epidemic.

You're right Huey - what's not to love? I've been a fan of their music since I was a teenager. I guess no one mentions them because they're not exactly churning out new music these days.

But their music is timeless. What would a wedding reception or anniversary party be without Color My World or Just You and Me?

That's the one I bought a couple of weeks ago, and I just got Chicago II yesterday. I will probably get Chicago Transit Authority next or Chicago V. I've got Make Me Smile stuck in my head all day.

"Does Anyone Know What Time It Is" and "Wishing You Were Here" are probably my two favorites.

Some good memories of Chicago back in my party days.

Holy Crap!!! I knew the label was spending a fortune on promoting Chicago, but that first video above used at least 4 cameras to film them recording. That was back when filming was actually on expensive film! And, it was at least a decade before MTV made videos a promotional tool to the consumer. That shows a massive investment from the label!

For all of you who hate big labels, they did (and still do) a ton of good stuff to get the best artists to market and provide their fans with content we want. Hell, that Chicago studio video alone is invaluable to true fans and it probably wasn't ever seen by the public until decades after the label spent a small fortune on it.

IN those days they made films like that to promote bands inside the industry. They were shown at conferences and trade shows to build excitement among promoters (for live gigs), radio stations, and even TV and Film studios for broadcast and movie productions.

Chicago was my favorite band from 5th grade (when I took up trombone) til college when I discovered Steely Dan. My first bar band was the classic four-piece with two and sometimes three horns (went thru a few saxophonists) and I wrote out the horn charts, quite a learning experience (played a conga on the songs that didn't have horns; I've got rhythm like three tennis shoes in a clothes dryer) . The first time we played Beginnings, THAT'S when I knew music would be a big part of my life, it just sounded so powerful!
I still have everything they've released, save a couple redundant GH's and their Xmas albums.

Thanks for the big, big grin! :text-goodpost: :text-goodpost: :text-goodpost:
