I just read about the Philips Hue-Connected LED system in Consumer Reports, apparently this tech's been on the market for six months or so but this is the first I've heard about it.

It basically allows you to use your iThing or Android device to control the lighting in your house. You hit a button and the three bulbs come on, with programmable intensity and color (the different K-temps of white light along with reds, blues, etc). I could see using this even in my living room "home theater", one setting for watching movies during the day, during the night, one setting for using my computer while the TV is on, a brighter setting for reading while the music's on, etc.

It's a bit pricey; the $200 starter kit has the base station that you hook up to your router, and three bulbs with Edison screw mounts. The bulbs last as long as current LEDs and use 20% of the power that incandescents use; additional bulbs are $59 each :shock: but the base station can control up to 50 (!) bulbs at once, each programmable to specific brightness and color! Sounds like you can set lights up to come on at a certain time (toss that damn alarm clock!) and to dim slowly to off (great for the bedroom, etc).

For not having a family, this past Xmas was kind've pricey (new Oppo, $700 to fly home, then $996 for snow tires) but this system is definitely now on my "future acquisition" list, and installation would be easy enough for me to do it myself. Cool Times we live in!
 
Over at Lutron they have a computer tool to help in picking the color.

I had to call Lutron and work with the help desk on configuring the tool.
but it works well and helped us with setting up our Par64 Led Stage lights.

The DMX Color Programming Tool allows users to specify the color for each intensity of a Grafik Eye QS zone. Users can also select colors by
programming a start and end point and using the interpolate function to automatically generate intermediate values for a smooth transition between colors.

The way I see it, home consumers will enjoy the LED lighting and the choices of colored lighting that can be made, to help set a mood.

In working some lighting for shows I have found that Red, Green, and Blue are the primary colors used to create the complete Rainbow. This is similiar to the Red, Yelow and Blue that an artist would use in Paint.

Primary colors are sets of colors that can be combined to make a useful range of colors. For human applications, three primary colors are usually used, since human color vision is trichromatic.

For additive combination of colors, as in overlapping projected lights or in CRT displays, the primary colors normally used are red, green, and blue. I hope you will all find this an interesting addition to the Hometheaters as the LED lighting industry continues to move foward. Finding inovative and interesting ways to enhance our experience.

This can also be helpfull in photagraphy because with the use of the lights will provide balanced lighting that is not yellowed, redish, or blueish and allow for better pictures.

This balanced lighting in a home theater would prevent tinting on the screen and walls from altering our viewing.
 
This sounds great for randomly changing which lights go on and off while you are away on vacation (making it appear that someone is there and acting as a deterrent to burglars).
We already have the Nest thermostat that is controllable from our iPhones. Having our lights accessible by cell would be great as well!
