What Movie(s) Did You Watch Today?

Superman is the official cinematic relaunch of the DC Universe (DCU) now released by the separate DC Studios branch of Warner Bros. It is run by James Gunn and Peter Safran. Henry Cavill is an unfortunate casualty of the last version of DC films. I thought the movie on the whole was solid. Not perfect but good. The new actor did a fantastic job imo.

Saw Weapons this weekend we loved it. Like an unholy hybrid mash up of Hereditary (creepy Pagan horror) and Magnolia (multi character perspective/chapter storytelling that eventually all ties together). Not for the squeamish but outstanding modern horror flick IMO with even some bits of humor here and there. Lot's of theories online as to the overall metaphor and some background chat from the director that both confirms and denies a lot of it. Interesting to read all the different take aways people had from the film. I know mine are still forming may need to see this one more then once to decide what it's really all about.
As an aside... I am a big fan of movies in general that do a good job of masking more profound underlying themes. The process of decoding/deciphering is always interesting and engaging for me as a viewer. For some reason the horror genre seems to be doing this much better then others lately.

Enjoyed the new Predator movie. It had some campy humor moments maybe more then I would have liked but it didn't ruin the movie for me. Plenty of Predator and Alien homage moments to previous films and a nice continuation/progression of the tie ins between the two franchises. Happy to see anything that keeps these franchises alive with this degree of effort like this and the Alien Earth Hulu series I enjoyed both.

Also watched the new Del Toro Frankenstein on Netflix. It was beautifully filmed with great performances all around. It just didn't seem to offer much if anything new to this classic story. Not that there is anything wrong with retelling a great story. I was just hoping for something more, new or different maybe. Del Toro's style was all over it which is a good thing it just didn't break any new ground IMO.

I think it would be important to have seen the first Predator just for creature origin/groundwork/background and maybe also Prey since this was the kickoff of the "better" sequels. None of the other Predator sequels are super important or worth watching IMO. And if you know what an Alien is, have seen any of the films and know that they exist in a shared universe that is the only other thing worth knowing. AVP spells this out but again is probably not necessary viewing. If anything the Alien Earth series on Hulu has more of a connection in that it ties in the Weyland Corp's efforts to explore, harvest, weaponize and profit from various alien species. This is a more relevant story element to Badlands then much of anything else from previous films.

Watched the latest Paul Thomas Anderson (There Will Be Blood, Boogie Nights, Punch Drunk Love, Magnolia, etc.) flick One Battle After Another with Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro and others. Sean Penn stole the movie IMO... not really a stretch of a role he was just particularly perfect for this character. Benicio was not far behind Penn in stealing many scenes with his character as well. The movie depicts a lot of conspiratorial stuff in many directions some more topical then others. But the story and characters were interesting enough to hold it together whatever anyone may think of one conspiracy vs another or whether you buy into any of them for that matter. Some very good and innovative cinematography especially during a car chase/pursuit scene.

Saw this yesterday morning... Sisu: Road to Revenge... it was a gratuitous sequel that probably didn't need to be made. But if they make twelve more sequels I will go see all of them. There is no such thing as too much Sisu.
Don't worry, I saw the original in the theater.
Only referring to any of the AvP stuff that I haven't seen and am not at all familiar with.

Rental Family with Brendan Fraser. Really enjoyed it especially the the Japanese cityscape/landscape cinematography urban and otherwise. Sleeper little movie should win some awards for one thing or another.

What did you think of Sisu?
I loved the first film, it was pretty unique, but the 2nd one seemed a bit over the top to me.
