What Movie(s) Did You Watch Today?

^-- ditto, even have the blu-ray, I need to watch it again now, it's been years

Hope was bonkers... but even more so then we expected. Starts out bonkers then goes even further off the sci-fi rails with a whole different story line then we were expecting (and may fuel a great sequel). As many reviews have mentioned the CGI is at times very low tech but also just a non factor IMO. If this bothers you then you are missing out on a really fun movie. The action scenes are outstanding bad CGI or not. This NPR review is probably the best general summary I have read although it does contain some spoilers. And there is clearly an undercurrent of Korean social, political and historical references, humor and themes some of which I got but some that went over my head so I will have to read some more in depth reviews and breakdowns. We loved it and the sidebar humor that lived in a lot of the dialogue often at hilariously inopportune moments was a highlight for me. And the old school Hyundai stick shift police car near Bullitt grade driving scenes are worth the ticket alone.

Digger was even more absolutely bonkers we saw it Sunday morning. Mish mosh style mash up Kubrick, Altman, Gilliam, Jeunet & Carot, Wes Anderson, others. We saw little tributes to all of the above scattered throughout the film. Reviews are clearly super mixed. We thought it was innovative and important film making. It's equal parts apocalyptic dystopian sci-fi, farce and topical commentary. It will probably ruffle some feathers but that's clearly the whole point. Tom Cruise nails his multiple roles which in and of itself is maybe a little bit of a spoiler after seeing only the trailer but really nothing mysterious that the film is trying to hide. This is a story telling gimmick that we initially did not enjoy or even understand it's purpose... but it then goes on to explain and justify itself IMO... especially at the very end after which we could not imagine the film being told otherwise.

Saw Wicker this weekend it was hilarious and bawdy fairly tale take on marriage and traditional husband/wife roles. Great cast. Olivia Colman is always great I would see anything with her after Tyrannosaur and so many other gold standard performances.

Watched A24's Death of Robin Hood this weekend. It was IMO a powerful little slow burn tale of regret, repent and redemption. Unapologetically violent and yet somehow also peaceful and moody with excellent cinematography. A total rework of the traditional character retaining just enough lore to feel authentic despite this drastic change.
I came back just to comment on this.

how you been monkey?

this was as you described unapologetic. in typical A24 fashion its part of the recipe. a requirement so it seems.

this was definitely a defining moment for hugh jackman. did a great job 'impersonating' Robin hood, and did a great job during the 'healing' process.

I loved this movie.

on a sidenote, did you notice the aspect ratio change when he arrived at the island? some sort of 'shift' from his rageful self into someone bleak and on the verge of 'freedom'.

I look forward to watching uprising, this is next on my list.

Hope was a movie I was looking forward to, Hwang Jung min is one of my favorite Korean actors.

I also unearthed my limited copy of Bittersweet life, its time to watch some good ol fashion Korean stuff.

(this may be due to me finishing one of the best Call of duty games in decades. absolutely amazing)

I wanted to hear more 'woody' jokes, but that may stem from somewhere.

I guess I uprooted something. or I'm barking up the wrong tree.

hmm.

Hope was crazy I loved it and everyone in it was great. Some of the back and forth dialogue is hilarious even in very intense action scenes. Let me know what think. It's streaming on demand on Amazon now but I will wait and buy it on BluRay.
