Wow, I'm surprised a "pencil"-style soldering iron could get hot enough to make a clean joint on a lug connector (granted, you have a variable-power unit, fancier than I ever had).I didn't want to waste the rest of the day, so, let's strip, crimp, solder and shrink.

As a part-time bar musician, I was constantly building my own 1/4" and XLR-ended cables, and I had to use a Weller soldering gun, my pen-style iron just didn't give off enough heat to avoid a cold-solder joint (it worked fine for circuit boards, etc).
