I have decided I don't need surround sound, ever

While my speakers and acoustics aren't nearly up to the task of performing in the way @Flint describes here, I do get some idea of this from headphones. I've been watching The Witcher on netflix, often (during break) before my family wakes up, so I use headphones (normally my modded denon 5000). There are a lot of ambient sounds in this production, like in a castle or some large public space, with muted conversations and other small sounds coming from all directions. I've had to turn my head a few times while watching because I thought one of my family members was walking up behind me to say something or get my attention.
