Looking for Bedroom Speakers

My daughter does not currently have a sound system in her room. She used to have a pair of old Infinity bookshelf speakers and my ancient Onkyo amp, but the amp finally took the dirt nap and the speakers are past their prime. She does not have a good place in her current room to put a receiver and she mainly plays music from her portable devices. I may eventually buy a small Roku TV for her room, but that is not an immediate thing. I am thinking that a pair of active speakers might be the best option. I don't want to spend more than $400 and would like to spend less if I can.

Any suggestions?

Check out a reputable audio dealer to see if there are custom mini systems available. My brother-in-law wanted something compact for his living room and ended up with a Denon main unit with Monitor Audio speakers. Very good system. The dealer had a show room with it set up with different configurations such as a Yamaha main unit with the same Monitor Audio speakers or the Yamaha unit with Reel speakers. No Sony package setups or anything. I don't know if that kind of thing is common or it is unique to the store I saw in my home town.

im not certain how distinguished your daughters taste are, and or her personal preferences are. Depending on her needs and variables, it might work, it might not. i still recommend the creative roar simply because it does what i want it to do, and being portable at the same time. it also charges your mobile device if needed.

hope you find the rig you're looking for tho... good luck!

I've been looking at this little sub-sat system from Boston Acoustics. It has Bluetooth, plus a couple inputs. The amp for the speakers is built into the sub, so it is set up a bit like a set of computer speakers. I am attracted to it, because I'm thinking it would probably offer better sound than a portable Bluetooth speaker while still taking up very little space. It is also very inexpensive. I can get it new for $159 at Amazon or refurbished from Accessories4Less for $99.

very nice! i love how bostons sound, so this might be the ticket!

give us an opinion when and if you get these! awesome bargain too!

I've had a few issues with Accessories4Less refurbs over the years, so I am considering going new ones from Amazon for $159. The new ones come with a five year warranty vs the 90 day warranty on the refurbs. The $99 price on ac4l.com is also misleading because it does not include shipping, which is a minimum of $17 for ground. I can get free 2nd day from Amazon, so I find the refurbs less than compelling. I'm going to buy a set for my younger daughter for her birthday on October 15. Depending on our experience, I may buy another set for my older daughter for Christmas. I just noticed that Best Buy carries these, so I might drop by the local store and see if I can give them a listen.

I ordered a set from Amazon. They will be here in a couple of days, but Alana's birthday is not until the 15th. I am using Alana as a test case because her room is the most space constrained and she is the least picky person. I will give a report once I get the system set up and in place. If we like them, I may buy another set or two for other rooms. I will ultimately need a sound solution for each bedroom and for the kitchen, though I am leaning toward that $400 Pioneer sound bar and sub solution for the kitchen.

what pioneer soundbar? sorry haywood, i didnt see it in the thread. :happy-smileygiantred:

The one designed by Andrew Jones. It runs about $400 paired with a wireless sub and reputedly the most musical sound bar anywhere near its price.

that looks awesome!

hmm... might have to give that a chance. reminds me of the ol cambridge soundworks speakers i used back then. of course, it wont compare since the technology for the smaller speakers arent as advanced as they are nowadays.

thanks for sharing!

This is the TV I am thinking about getting for the kitchen to go with the sound bar. The picture quality is supposed to be good for a lower-end set and it is one of the new Roku TV sets that is built around the Roku OS from the ground up, which is perfect for me. Since our DVR, media server and all of our streaming services work through Roku, a Roku TV is about as good as it gets from a user interface and simplicity point of view. Paired with a good sounding sound bar or sub-sat solution, I think it would be very hard to beat this for a kitchen/dining room setup. The 40 inch model costs $350 on Amazon.
