Mad Max - Fury Road

1977 Summer City
1977 I Never promised you a rose garden
1979 Tim
1979 Mad Max
1980 The Chain Reaction
1981 Mad Max 2
1981 Gallipoli
1982 The Year of living dangerously
1982 Attack Force Z

1987 Leathal Weapon

(Gallipoli is a great early Mel Gibson movie if anyone missed it. Great WWI film.)

Flint,

I've always felt the Mad Max series deserved a good remake with better script writers and filming technique, not to mention better editing and sound.

If you have not checked out the DVD version of Mad Max with the original audio track it's worth getting a copy. The audio on the original US theatrical, DVD and VHS and laserdisc releases is terrible. They actually had Mel Gibson and other voice actors dub their dialogue after deciding that the thick Aussie accents would spoil the marketability of this film for the US market. As a result much of the dynamics and detail of the rest of the soundtrack were lost or ruined in the process. But the original undubbed soundtrack is like a completely different movie watching (or listening) experience. Not like any newer high tech surround flicks but at least sounds clear and authentic. Not sure if the Aussie soundtrack is available on bluray but I know it's on the DVD. Here it is listed on Amazon.

Yes just looked and the bluray also has the original soundtrack.

I had no idea about the different recording of the soundtrack. I will check this out, thanks.

The difference is pretty dramatic. Again to be clear it's not like any newer film with full blown uncompressed Dolby or DTS. But all kinds of new background sounds, noises, effects, and music are all of the sudden present. It's just much more natural sounding. The dubbed soundtrack sounds super compressed or squashed in comparison. Similarly (while we are discussing remasters of bad soundtracks) there is also a remastered version of the first Terminator movie where they took sound effect samples from T2 (gunshots, etc,) and went back to clean up what was a very flat mono soundtrack on the original VHS, DVD and laser disc releases. It's much more dynamic sounding and enjoyable if not occasionally overdone on some of the added effects.

I have not seen it yet, but I want to and I am really looking forward to it.

I will get down to the local video place, ya we still have one, and try and pick up the BR this weekend.

Randy... whatever you think of the movie critically it is a fun watch on any big screen with good sound. Basically a two hour car chase/car wreck extravaganza. Let me know what you think.

I will watch it downstairs then. :happy-smileygiantred: :happy-smileygiantred: :happy-smileygiantred:

Bump: Anyone see the new Mad Max? Opinions?

You mean Fury Road? Not exactly "new" anymore...

Yeah I've seen it; I have the BD. First time, I hated it. THought the acting was nonexistent and the plot infantile. Then, I played the video game. :laughing-rolling: Actually liked the game a lot. After completing it, and after a local friend talking about how much he liked Fury Road, went back and watched the movie again. Liked it a lot more the second time. Still thought the acting was kinda wooden (or at least, under-stated), but overall a fun action movie. Killer SQ.

Pauly... I meant "new" as opposed to 1979 original. I enjoyed watching it if for no other reason it was George Miller's opportunity to finally realize his vision to it's fullest with modern film making technology. Kind of like the Peter Jackson King Kong remake. Great movie? No. But fun to watch.

I kind of like those guilty pleasure movies.

I think HM is kind of qualifying them maybe as "guilty pleasure" kinda movies.

Well, it was definitely fun to watch. It was two hours of hifi fun. The ole SVS got a pretty good workout in. LOL

I had the same reaction Pauly did. 1st time thought it was crap. Watched it a second time and took it for what it is...fun!

Rope

!

It didn't really grab me as "great" either, Dina liked it a lot... it sure cleaned up at the Oscars!

I thought it was a fun movie. The effects were great, the design incredible. If a dude playing a guitar that shoots fire while standing on a gigantic monster truck in the middle of a car chase in a post apocalyptic future while another half dozen dudes beat drums on the back of the thing doesn't peg out your awesome needle, well, I want to party with you.

But I didn't find it particularly GREAT. Not best movie type of status, certainly. I'm not even sure it needed to be a Mad Max movie- you could have cut that guy out of it and let the women be their own heroes and it would have worked. It just seemed like somebody had a cool idea and somebody else decided to attach it to the Mad Max franchise.
