Speaker Placement Dilema

I need to keep the whole thing under $500 for four speakers.
If you want to go small satellite speakers I can't recommend the SVS Prime sats enough. I bought them open box for $209.00 A pair. I was/am using them to hold me over until I could buy speakers I wanted for my main system. I have them paired with my SVS sub and easily reach unstressed peaks with music in to the mid 90 db range in my 16×22 open room with ease and grace. Hands down the best tiny speakers I ever heard. They do absolutely nothing wrong.

I came very close to fabricating a center channel mount when I mounted my display above the fireplace. A couple of L brackets and a nicely finished piece of wood would have taken care of it. However, since I don't use the fireplace I simply sat the center channel on the hearth and off we went.

Looking forward to seeing what you decide on. I wish I had room for a dedicated HT, but I don't so I love seeing real world fixes done by people who have an actual interest in the hobby.

Was that you that was advertising a fireplace for sale several years ago?

I just realized that those little SVS satellites are small enough that I could hang one under the TV as a center channel. They only six inches deep, I've read a lot of good reviews and they are in my price range. Dammit.

Yes, that was back on the old S&V forum when I still had my old Sony CRT and had no choice but to stick it in the corner because of that stupid frickin fireplace.

maybe try getting some for surrounds, then 'justifying a purchase' later one...

or just go full monty.

I remember your issue with that fireplace. Thankfully I have no fireplace in my home. I mean it's Houston, who needs a fireplace

The rest of this system will consist of a 50-inch 1080p Toshiba display, a lower-end Yamaha receiver, an Energy subwoofer, a Roku box, a PS3 and an XBox One. This setup will eventually be the only one on the main floor.

I am considering these speakers from Definitive Technology:

The concern I have is whether these speakers with 5.25" drivers will be able to fill the space. There are 6.5" versions of the same speakers at about $100 more a piece, but I'm not sure the extra $400 is worth the difference. The idea is to start with one pair of DI 5.5 LCRs in the front and one pair of DI 5.5S in the back and then add a Mythos 7 center channel down the road. This setup will be paired with my old Energy EPS-150 12-inch subwoofer.

Another variant of the Def Tech route would be to buy four of these:

Alternatively, I've been looking at these less expensive speakers from Polk:

But then there is this deal on the Yamaha's I mentioned earlier in this thread:

I am having a ridiculously hard time making up my mind and it is driving my wife bonkers. All suggestions welcome.

You know you want the 6.5 Def Techs. You'll always think about having those babies if you don't get them. Save money or the hassle. Your choice. Just say you have a bad case of GAS (gear acquisition sickness.)

"I should've bought the smaller, cheaper, crappier speakers." -- No One Ever

hahaha! i love this one!

yes, i confess, ive done this a gazillion times.

thats why i love my soundbars now. too bad i havent used them due to baby sleeping, eating, pooping, crawling, poking....

my subwoofer is a cereal bar with the port as cheerio dispenser.

seriously tho haywood, if its efficiency maybe double check the sensitivity levels on them. my biggest fear with in walls is its 'not enough' or placement.

did you consider the bics? they're horns.
