The Last Jedi - SPOILER Thread

Is there really a need to write a review this way? Can we not just rate it all as entertaining or not? It is what we all are after when we watch a movie or am i wrong?

IMHO this movie franchise is pretty culturally important. Hence the need/justification to talk about it to death.

Plus, I'm not sure how serious the author was on that "review." ;)

"The views expressed in this article are not ... (to) be taken to express the views of the authors."

I dont know about that. It has always been just an escape from daily grind that i go and watch a movie. It is just me though. I am easy. Lol!

It's been a few days since I went and saw it. I've gone through liking it, not liking it, liking it... and currently having mixed feelings about it. I think for me the big negative is, from my perspective, the dismantling of everything that the original trilogy built. Another negative is lack of any character arc for some of the characters, in particular Poe who had a fairly major role in the movie. He didn't grow at all during the show and had no real remorse for the deaths his "rogue" actions caused.

But still, it was good to be there in that universe and I'd still tell people to go see it, but again, I have mixed feelings.

I think there were character arcs.

Poe's was pretty minor- he did grow a bit, evidenced by his stopping Finn when Luke was buying them time. He learned the lesson, even if it didn't seem like it was the result of soul searching.

Finn had to go from trying to run to making a stand. He did that. Rose helped.

Rose went from being a nobody to one of the motivating members of the Resistance. I like her.

Rey continued her arc- from searching for her parents to searching for her place. She thought it might be learning to be a Jedi, but finally realized she needs to learn to be her own brand of Force user. I expect this will continue.

Kylo grew a bit- from being an easily manipulated poorly controlled person to someone deciding it's time to call his own shots. He still hasn't grown up, but he's not the same person he was.

Snoke, he just went to pieces when it was on the line.

I'll agree that none of these were all that major or earth-shattering (Crait-shattering?) changes. More shifts in degree.

...............Rose went from being a nobody to one of the motivating members of the Resistance.............

I have to disgaree. Sure, I hate that Finn made the decision to go against orders and decide to do a suicide run on taking out the "battle ram cannon" (whatever they called it), but Rose fucked that up by running into his speeder just for a peck on the cheek. At the time, the Resistance didn't know Luke was going to appear ala hologram, so Finn's sacrifice was going to be the means to buy them more time to escape.

I see shades of Jar Jar with her. Just another stumbling block character "forced" (for lack of a better word) upon the audience. She has no real role in the Resistance. Finn was willing to lay his life down on the line and at the last minute, she robs him of his heroism and (at the moment) just gives the First Order that much more of an advantage to snuff out the Resistance. Traitor imo.

She should be kissing Luke's dead Jedi ass right now.

Everybody's roles in the Resistance need to change. There's no X-wings to fly anymore, Poe has to find another way to fight. Leia doesn't have a full army (and they'll have to write her out anyway). And do on.

Finn may have been willing to do that, but his sacrifice would have been pointless. Destroy that door knocker, there's nothing accomplished. They're still hiding, but running low on food. So that doesn't bother me.

Picked up the 4K copy yesterday, and the wife and I watched it last night. Still don't like the parts that I didn't like on the first viewing, but the picture quality looks great with this movie. I think I heard that there is about 30 minutes of deleted material, so I'll have to check out the bonus disk.

I picked it up (4K version) at WalMart, was going to get thru amazon but there were out of stock and price was the same at WM.

I saw it in the theater and was undecided if I liked it. After watching last night I have to say it seems like it will be my second least like film of the franchise.

^^ Hmmmm, I am mostly indifferent about it but still like it better than all the prequels.

Yeah, watching it the other night, I started to compare it the prequels as well, and then thought, that's not fair, they all have their good moments about them. Something is just off about this movie though.

Side note: Is it just me, or did they CGI Leia's face when she was floating back in from getting blown out of the bridge? It almost looked like she was a young Leia, and not present day Leia.

But the prequels do at least have a couple of redeeming scenes in them. And I do think Lucas was more in touch with the fan base than Disney is. Disney has played it safe for the most part with the franchise, although Rogue One, at least to me, is probably my favorite Disney Star Wars movie they have released.

I reserved commenting until I got to re-watch it on disc.

I agree with most of you. The Casino scene sucked. Leia using the force to survive being ejected into space did’t come-off as believable.

I’m also bothered by the apparent need to have each film feature a bigger version of the ships (Dreadnought) and to modify the existing vehicles (AT-M6).

Speaking of vehicles ... What is the purpose of a space bomber when there’s no gravity in space? I suppose I could tell myself that there’s some sort of propulsion system for the bombs .. but then theyre not bombs. And speaking of gravity ... Why are the “Heavy Bombers” so slow? These are quibbles that I should be answer with “because its Star Wars” but that scene took me out of the moment.

I like the idea that Rey isn’t a Skywalker and that anyone can be a Jedi.
I liked Finn taking a backseat and not turning Star Wars into a buddy flick.
I’d hoped to learn more about Snoke and that Phasma would be featured more.
