What Are You Listening To?

That was the very first SRV album I ever bought. Not that I've got very much of his stuff, but I'm just saying... :eusa-clap:

The irony with that cover art is he doesn't play any acoustic guitar on "In Step", or at least I can't recall hearing one. (My disclaimer just in case I'm wrong!)

I know I have mentioned Vialka over at S&V, but it can't hurt to mention them again. This guitar and drums duo is AMAZING. You will not feel like you are missing out on anything just because they are only a duo. In fact, each song will offer up more than enough. It's fast paced music, with influences from all parts of the world, often all thrown into one song. Insane, progish changes. And just plain FUN.

Best of all, you can now download it in FLAC format for only 5 euro (hey, they're based in France). You can also listen to every song before you buy. Go here:

http://music.vialka.com/album/succ-s-plan-taire-international

If the first three songs don't convince you to buy, listen to them again in a couple of days. I think Flint will like this one, given where I have seen his proggy inclinations lead in the past. I think Paul will buy this one, just because he likes to buy stuff!

Finally, if you are like me and have never heard all of the lyrics to the entire "There's a Hole in the Bucket, Dear Liza," then you should at least listen to Vialka's version of this traditional (it's the last song on the album). But make sure you get all the way to the end, that's where you realize what a funny song it is.

EDIT: Having read comments below, I think the best way to ease people into this album is to recommend that Track 3 be listened to first.

I wasn't able to make it through the first track (I hesitate to call it a song) at that link you gave but tracks 2-5 haven't been too bad.

Ha Ha! I LOVE track 1. Especially when it gets to the crazy, just-about-screaming point somewhere in the middle. If you can get through the other tracks, then you can make it though track one. Be bold. Track 1 is just one of those songs that takes a awhile to digest all the parts. But once expectation is in place, it is AWESOME!

But thanks for listening. I really think this is a great band. And you should see that woman play the drums. It's hard to believe that all that percussive sound comes from just one skinny woman.

Yeah, you're not quite right in the head. :teasing-neener:

Ok ok, geez force my hand. Downloading the FLAC album now...

You got that right! I think the whole thing sounded like synthesized flatulence. :handgestures-thumbdown:

I also think Aaron has been :teasing-smokingcrack:

Listening now... Pretty good SQ, actually. (And hey Aaron, not highly compressed! :handgestures-thumbup:) So far I like track 4 best (Good Riddance). Yeah, this music is pretty out there but once you get past the (presumably intentional) shock, there's some interesting stuff in there. Some interesting sound effects on track 6 (Dutar).

Wife has used words like "weird" and "annoying"... but other parts she says "aren't so bad." So it's not exactly jam-to-music-while-you-drive type stuff, oh well - not all of us stick to mainstream Britney Spears claptrap. :eusa-clap:

Edit: daughter says it's "cuckoo music." :text-lol:

Edit #2: wife loves the last track!

Those comments are great, especially the "cuckoo music" comment. It is certainly not easy listening. But if you really want to pay attention there is good stuff there. By the third time through, I was rocking to it like a mo-fo, in my airplane seat of all palces.

It is true that they use some non-traditional sounds, sounds that might make you think your speakers are breaking. But their are so many sounds out there can be used in a "musical" way, why limit yourself to the ones traditionally considered beautiful. Think about how Jimi Hendrix got people to change their minds about what might be considered a musical tone. Now people are using all kinds of static and white noise to play music with. Heck, I've heard some stuff that you have to listen through the haze of noise to really hear what is going on. The funny thing is that a very good system is required to listen to some of this really noisy stuff. There's just no way a subpar system can give you the detail you need to get through the noise to the music.

Finally, don't you think that the "hole-in-the-bucket" song ends up making the woman look a bit silly and the man as considered thinker? I ask, because you said your wife like the song. I do too. But I think it ends up making the woman look a little less thoughtful than the man. Not that I want too get too deep about a song that is all in good fun.

Dunno, I'll have to listen again. First time through I was just enjoying the flashback to some of my music camp days as a wee laddy...

My fav SP

I used to love listening to that album. I don;t think I have it anymore. But my wife may. It'd be nice to spin on a good system and see how it sounds. I imagine it would be very enveloping.

This band is very near the top for me. I routinely play a CD from my complete collection. :music-listening:

Currently listening to very odd Chinese language lounge music. The music is perfect Italian style lounge, but the singing is crazy sounding (to this westerner) Cantonese, or something.
