This review is from: Second Barbra Streisand Album (Audio CD)

I have always been a huge fan of Barbra Streisand. I love anything she has ever recorded, but like most Barbra fans, I especially have a fondness for her 1960's material; "The Second Barbra Streisand Album" is one of my favorites.
Recorded in just four days in 1963, "The Second Barbra Streisand Album" did not produce a hit single, but managed to go all the way to #2 on the Billboard Album Chart. As of 2010 the record as gone Gold selling over 500,000 copies.
This CD is filled with gems such as "Any Place I Hang My Hat Is Home", "Down With Love", "Lover, Come Back To Me", "Right as the Rain", and "My Coloring Book".
Like all her sixties albums, "The Second Barbra Streisand Album" consists of songs that are known as standards, songs that were made famous on Broadway.
If you enjoy this CD you will also love "The First Barbra Streisand Album", "People", "Color Me Barbra", and "Simply Sreisand".

The Naked Ride Home -- CD

Jackson Browne

2002 Elektra Records

Amazon.com

One of the most eloquent singer-songwriters of the '70s heyday of the movement, Jackson Browne has always been a master of deciphering what is written on the human heart. On his first outing in six years, Browne again waxes autobiographical, wandering through his extensive interior landscape and transforming his pain into art. But after three decades, his songs of elusive love lost and found have become a little bit wry and world-weary. Witness the bittersweet title song, where the details are so crisp and well drawn that it's difficult to believe that he didn't just lift them from his own life. Similarly, "The Night Inside Me" returns to some of the wrenching themes of 1975's Late for the Sky with fresh anger. But it is Jackson Browne's turbulent romantic history--his elevation of the small, significant details that make up a life, or more poignantly, show one unraveling--that defines his work, and which is in full flower here. --Jaan Uhelszki

"The Naked Ride Home" (Browne) – 5:56
"The Night Inside Me" – 4:38
"Casino Nation" – 6:57
"For Taking the Trouble" (Browne) – 4:25
"Never Stop" – 4:56
"Walking Town" – 6:20
"About My Imagination" – 6:10
"Sergio Leone" – 7:57
"Don't You Want to Be There" (Browne) – 7:35
"My Stunning Mystery Companion" (Browne) – 4:53

Love Songs -- CD

Najee

2000 Blue Note Records

I absolutely loooove Najee. This CD is great for just relaxing by yourself or when you have someone you love beside you, with a glass of wine and scented candles. Najee performs his music from deep within his soul and releases the love and passion from his heart through his instrument, the sensual sax. I hope he has someone in his life with whom he can share his tender love and emotional sensitivity. I would hate to think that all this passion and love is not being expressed/with someone dear to him. I can imagine this CD playing in the background while I'm slowly making love; it's so sensual and hypnotic. I especially liked Track #2 Now That I've Found You, Track #6 I Adore Mi Amore and Track #8, Stay. I also liked Freddie Jackson's soulful singing style on Track # 5, "All I'll Ever Ask". I want to meet the person who wrote the lyrics to that song. The words are so profound, and Najee's music embraces it with so much sensuality, tenderness and passion. Freddie Jackson's voice and Najee's sax: The two complement each other beautifully. They should do more songs together. I hope one day to see Najee and Freddie perform in person. They should do more songs together. Perhaps a collaboration of soulful Love Songs Part II. ~Amazon~

Finally broke down and got this one. I like it! Good singing and instrumentals, catchy toe-tapping stuff. I do feel a little gypped that it's just a 30-minute album, though... oh well.

This seemed appropriate for today.....

How It Feels To Be Free -- CD

Nina Simone

Simply a collection of Nina at her best., August 12, 2008
By Sir Sluggo - See all my reviews
This review is from: How It Feels to Be Free (Audio CD)

Among the numerous recordings I have of this great artist, this collection contains many of the favorite reasons I love to listen to her. There is a certain raw quality in this mix that communicates the essence of her style. She played and sang in your face but let you in to feel her hurt, and anger and her disappointment with love and life. I bought this in a Starbucks one night while getting a cup of coffee. I was driving on a business trip and the radio just wasn't cutting it. Not only was the coffee great but this album was just right. It also convinced me that I had found a new source to browse for some thoughtful musical collections. If you want to introduce friends to Nina Simone, you give them this album. I have.

Steve Martin continues his career as a blue grass singer. This time he teams up with a five man band from North Carolina who call themselves the Steep Canyon Rangers. These guys can really play and sing. They harmonize so well on the track "More Bad Weather On The Way". This song has only one line of lyric, but the musical instruments playing on it is superb. The disc contains upbeat tracks like "Rare Bird Alert" and "Hide Behind A Rock". These songs are blue grass in the most pure form. I am blown away by the way the guys of Steep Canyon Rangers play the banjo. These two tracks put me in a good mood. I love the humor in the songs on this disc. My favorite track is "Jubliation Day". This is the funniest break up song I have ever heard. "Atheists Don't Have No Songs" is a very funny song about music and observations about religion. My other favorite track is the instrumental tune "The Great Remember". The fiddle playing by Nicky Sanders gives this song a romantic tone that I really like. Paul McCartney lends his vocal talents on the track "Best Love". This track stands out for me. It is the first bluegrass love song I have ever heard. "Yellow Backed Fly" is another enjoyable tune. This song is about the simple joy of fishing. This song has a visual quality that I enjoy. The Dixie Chicks lend their talents on the lovely track "You". The guys harmonize so well on the tune "Women Like To Slow Dance". This song has a spirit of a hoe down. This song is very fun. "Rare Bird Alert" will turn more listeners into fans of blue grass music. I really like this music.

In Step -- CD

Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble

1999 Sony Music

Amazon.com essential recording

In Step embraces blues and rock without compromising the primal joys of either. This is Stevie Ray Vaughan's best studio album and the first he recorded sober. "Travis Walk" offers a heady rush of flat-picking, "The House is Rockin'" is full-tilt roots-boogie, "Let Me Love You Baby" and "Leave My Girl Alone" are sweet blues epiphanies, and the nine-minute instrumental "Riviera Paradise" is a truly soulful mix of blues and jazz. By now, just a year before his untimely death, Vaughan had also tamed his bawling voice into a rich instrument. In short, this 1989 session is Vaughan at his artistic peak. And the four compelling live performances added to this reissue--"The House Is Rockin'," "Let Me Love You Baby," "Texas Flood," and "Life Without You," all from the In Step tour--prove there was no studio trickery involved. It's raw blues-rock perfection. --Ted Drozdowski

All songs were written by Stevie Ray Vaughan, except where noted.

"The House Is Rockin'" (Doyle Bramhall, Vaughan) – 2:24
"Crossfire (Bill Carter, Ruth Ellsworth, Chris Layton, Tommy Shannon, Reese Wynans)" – 4:10
"Tightrope" (Bramhall, Vaughan) – 4:40
"Let Me Love You Baby" (Willie Dixon) – 2:43
"Leave My Girl Alone" (Buddy Guy) – 4:15
"Travis Walk" – 2:19
"Wall of Denial" (Bramhall, Vaughan) – 5:36
"Scratch-N-Sniff" (Bramhall, Vaughan) – 2:43
"Love Me Darlin'" (Chester Burnett) – 3:21
"Riviera Paradise" – 9:00

A WONDERFUL EXAMPLE OF GREAT MUSIC, October 12, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Ten Summoner's Tales (Jewel Box) (Audio CD)

The first time I heard a song by Sting was at the end of "The Professional" (Leon in France). When I heard the song, "Shape of My Heart" I knew I had to get the album. Once I popped the CD in my player I was completely overtaken by Sting's musical style. He has a real knack for making clever and innovative music that sets him apart from anyone else. Sting has a strong passion for the music he makes and it shows throughout this album. My favorite tracks are "Shape of My Heart" (of course), "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You", "Fields of Gold", "Heavy Cloud No Rain", "It's Probably Me", and "Epilogue (Nothing 'Bout Me)". After listening to 'TEN SUMMONER'S TALES', I can truly see why it was nominated for 6 Grammy Awards.

Love Is Stronger Than Justice (The Munificent Seven) – 5:11

THYRTY -- 2 CD Set

This review is from: Thyrty: 30th Anniversary Collection (Audio CD)

Lynyrd Skynyrd commemorates the 30th anniversary of their debut album with the release of "Thyrty", a collection that spans Skynyrd's entire career from 1970 up to the present including music from every album the band has ever released.
"Thyrty" includes such Skynyrd classics as "Gimme Three Steps", "Workin' For MCA", "What's Your Name", "That Smell" and the immortal "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird". There are also tracks from the recent years of the band with Johnny Van Zant as vocalist. It's truly amazing to hear the similarities between the voices of Ronnie and Johnny. One would almost think it was the same person singing all the songs on this compilation.
For die-hard Skynyrd fanatics, "Thyrty" includes one unreleased track from 1970 entitled "Blues Medley" which is a 10-minute stellar blues jam featuring a youthful Ronnie Van Zant singing his heart out along with some jaw-dropping guitar work from Allen Collins and Gary Rossington. This compilation is almost worth it for this track alone.
This latest Lynyrd Skynyrd compilation is a definitive retrospective of Jacksonville, Florida's greatest band. If you don't own any of the other many Skynyrd compilations out there, "Thyrty" is definitely one to have. You get music from every era of the band plus an rare unreleased track and a CD booklet loaded with great photos and a brief but detailed history of the band. Definitely Essential.

Both Sides Now -- CD

Joni Mitchell

2000 Warner Bros. Records

Amazon.com

Joni Mitchell has long dabbled in the jazz world, forging alliances with the likes of Charles Mingus, Jaco Pastorius, and Wayne Shorter, while incorporating elements of fusion into her more intrepid recordings. Both Sides Now, however, comes at jazz from a different angle than the experimental likes of Mingus and The Hissing of Summer Lawns. Here is Joni the chanteuse, tackling smoky standards such as "At Last," "Sometimes I'm Happy," and "Stormy Weather" in the embrace of lush pop arrangements that owe a debt to Nelson Riddle and Gordon Jenkins, though some stray over the line from stately into staid. The focus here is on Mitchell the vocalist, and she displays a real commitment to the music. She has the chops and the smarts to tackle these staples, but at times she seems intimidated by their illustrious pedigrees. Two of Mitchell's own songs are revived here--"A Case of You" and the title track. The results are mixed: the former takes on a new weight while the latter seems adolescent in such mature company. Ultimately, Both Sides Now is more a valentine to classic pop by a woman who can--and should--be off making more touchstones of her own. --Steven Stolder

I feel like I found a gem in the haystack of one-shot albums. This is a high quality recording with great sound to match the powerful lyrics, vocals!!, and instruments (drums and guitar are ripping). There is one ballad, but mostly high energy music with each song distinctly it's own and literally giving you "Bigger, Better, Faster, More!". It's sad there is not "More!" albums from this band, but I sure am happy I found this album.

Here We Go Again - Celebrating The Genius of Ray Charles -- CD

Willie Nelson - Wynton Marsalis featuring Norah Jones

2011 Blue Note Records

Product Description

Once in a while the stars align and something magical happens...as on the night Jazz at Lincoln Center presented a salute to the late, great bluesman, Ray Charles. Two musical iconoclasts, Willie Nelson and Wynton Marsalis, along with the stunning songstress Norah Jones, collectively brought their unique musical perspective to the legendary artist's hits such as "Hallelujah I Love Her So", "Hit the Road Jack," and "Unchain My Heart." Country music legend Willie Nelson and Pulitzer Prize-winning jazz artist and Jazz at Lincoln Center Artistic Director Wynton Marsalis share more in common than their multiple GRAMMY® awards. They also share great respect and admiration for the late musical pioneer Ray Charles. Nelson and Marsalis joined musical forces for a two-night Jazz at Lincoln Center concert event at New York City's Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center. Their set list explored the legacy of Charles, cleverly sequencing the songs to tell the story of a love affair from beginning to end and beyond. This fine idea was made finer by the inclusion of fellow multiple GRAMMY® winner Norah Jones, whose style suggests a middle ground between Nelson and Marsalis. The sold out performance was captured and the resulting footage expertly mixed and mastered for the brand new album.

On And On -- CD

Jack Johnson

2003 Universal Records

Amazon.com

Jack Johnson has found himself a groove. Indeed, the Hawaiian surfing champion turned alternative pop-folk star really hasn't changed things one iota for his sophomore release. Fans of Brushfire Fairytales should be delighted with the results. The groove is a mellow one--most of the 16 tracks here are semi-acoustic--and that easy-going spirit filters into Johnson's lyrical philosophies. "What will be will be / And so it goes" he sings on "Times Like These," the opening track. Thankfully, Johnson is never too mellow, and there's a "Don't worry, be happy" vibe to most of his music. "The Horizon Has Been Defeated" even has a pseudo-reggae feel to it. Although classified as an alternative musician, the singer-songwriter's compositions owe much to past hits. "Traffic in the Sky" is reminiscent of Jim Croce's "Operator" and Looking Glass's one-hit-wonder, "Brandy." On the splendid "Taylor," Johnson sounds an awful lot like Donovan. And "By The Way" recalls the Lovin' Spoonful. -- Bill Holdship

Shooting Rubberbands At The Stars -- CD

Edie Brickell & The New Bohemians

1988 Geffen Records

Amazon.com

"What I Am," the leadoff track on Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars, was a left-field hit off this Dallas band's debut album, and it remains about the only thing they're remembered for (excepting Brickell's eventual marriage to Paul Simon). But a good part of this album is quite listenable and stands up reasonably well to the years. "Love Like We Do," "Little Miss S." and "The Wheel" are basically equal to "What I Am" in their rhythmic and melodic pop appeal; "Air of December" and "She" allow the band's more jazz-oriented roots a little room to flourish, and the poignantly personal ballad "Circle" remains the best lyric Brickell has written. It was all downhill from here, but Shooting Rubberbands was an early peak worth revisiting. --Peter Blackstock

This review is from: The Secret Sisters (Audio CD)

I've fallen out of love with recent country releases and have been relying on my catalog of music going back anywhere from 20-50 years to satisfy my country needs. This is a fantastic album by two sisters that are perfect for each other and remaining true to the contemporary country of the past.

The vocals of the sisters are great. They sound awesome together and the harmonies are top notch.

The only problem that I could really have with this album is the number of songs that are covers. The songs that they wrote themselves are very good, and I would have liked to see more of that and less covers on the album.

I'm not going to knock it down to 4 stars though, because even though I think there is room for improvement this is the kind of country I've been aching for. If you're sick of the poppy country of today and are ready for a good throwback to the past, give this a shot.

Willie Nelson

The first words from Willie Nelson's lips, "The sun is filled with ice and gives no warmth at all / the sky was never blue," warn the listener something is happening here. In a converted Mexican movie theater, producer Daniel Lanois surrounds the 65-year-old Nelson with the most startling and assured musical vision of his career: lush, rippling guitars, and swelling, splashing drum tracks, doubled and tripled over, sometimes in a Latin mood. Lanois allows Nelson freedom to solo in and around his sonic dreamwork, and with the presence of longtime fellow travelers Mickey Raphael, Emmylou Harris, and sister Bobbie, the record clearly smacks of Nelson's style and lyrical vision. The original material is decades old, but little known, and generally as haunting as Lanois's arrangements. (Only one song should have remained in the vaults: the emotionally-curdled "I Just Can't Let You Say Good-Bye.") So much could have gone wrong on this pairing. It's a thrill to hear how much truly goes right. --Roy Francis Kasten
