Legend - The Best Of -- Remastered CD

Bob Marley and The Wailers

2002 Island/Def Jam Records

Legendary Anthology, April 9, 2003
By Brian D. Rubendall (Oakton, VA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)

This review is from: Legend - The Best Of Bob Marley And The Wailers (New Packaging) (Audio CD)
The Bob Marley collection "Legend" does indeed make its case for Marley as a regge legend. More than any other artist, he helped bring regge music to mainstream audiences with his excellent songwriting and musicianship. He could be political without sounding preachy, and also wrote some of the sweetest love songs of any musical genre. Marley was popularized in America, of course, when Eric Clapton remade his "I Shot the Sheriff." Clapton's version is outstanding, but Marley's is equally so and is the one were the song's subtle political message is more overt.

Other outstanding tracks on the collection include the sweet "Three Little Birds," the ace peace and love song "One Love/People Get Ready," the straight up love songs "Is This Love" and "Stir It Up," the political rant of "Buffalo Soldier," the call to arms "Get Up Stand Up" and the rave-up "Jamming." Even among the lesser well known songs there is not a clunker or misstep in the mix.

Overall, a superior single disc anthology that establishes Bob Marley as one of the most important musicians of his era.

"Is This Love" – 3:52
"No Woman, No Cry" (Live) (Vincent Ford) – 7:07
"Could You Be Loved" – 3:55
"Three Little Birds" – 3:00
"Buffalo Soldier" (Bob Marley/N.G. Williams) – 4:17
"Get Up, Stand Up" (Bob Marley/Peter Tosh) – 3:16
"Stir It Up" – 5:33
"Easy Skanking" – 2:57 (bonus track on original cassette edition/2002 reissue)
"One Love/People Get Ready" (Bob Marley/Curtis Mayfield) – 2:51
"I Shot the Sheriff" – 4:41
"Waiting in Vain" – 4:15
"Redemption Song" – 3:49
"Satisfy My Soul" – 4:32
"Exodus" – 7:36
"Jamming" – 3:31
"Punky Reggae Party" –6:52 (bonus track on original cassette edition/2002 reissue)

Something Good -- CD

Charmaine Clamor

2010 FreeHam Records

From Charmaine Clamor, the queen of jazzipino: I believe there are two kinds of music: the Good Stuff and everything else.

Good can be jazz, or world, or blues. Good can be classical, or opera, or hip-hop. Or funk or soul or even pop. The labels don't matter; the sound matters.

It's true, I'm a Filipino-American. It's true, I'm a jazz singer. I do this musical blending called jazzipino, and it comes straight from my heart. But it's also true that I'm a citizen of Earth, and I'm a world-blues-funk-soul-pop vocalistwho won't be, can't be, categorized. I'm me, and this is my music.

You'll hear my passion for the groove, for swing, for beautiful words and inspiring sounds. You'll also discover my passion for the blessed planet we inhabit, and which we honor with our Mother Nature Suite. How strongly do I feel about taking care of our environment? The tray your CD sits in is made of potatoes. If you don't dig this album, you can bury the whole package in your compost heap. It's 100% recycleable!
We like to think, however, that our music doesn't qualify for the dreaded "everything else" genre. We're delighted to share with you Something Good.

You have to own some vintage Stevie Ray Vaughn! He has to be in the top 10 all time guitarists.

Oh, and "top 10 all time guitarists" are right up there with "bottom 400 keyboardists, saxophonists, and kazooists"... :eek:bscene-birdiedoublered:

Make Someone Happy -- CD

Sophie Milman

2007 Linus Records

From Amazon.ca

Toronto's Sophie Milman has that rare ability to appeal to two often deeply separated worlds: those who like their jazz light and those purists who want their jazz heavy and nothing short of it. By having a more-than-capable traditional jazz band and challenging herself vocally to bring the swing, she has commanded respect from both camps. Milman's delivery is silky smooth, a gorgeous voice with a low register reminiscent of Fiona Apple and an upper register that brings Ella Fitzgerald's bounce and playfulness to mind. Like many jazz vocal discs, her sophomore release Make Someone Happy contains an abundance of covers, but some rather surprising in style. The often-done "Fever"’s arrangement is nothing like the original, containing more of an unnerving musical undercurrent than the traditional sultry one. Milman--who recorded this disc in her early 20s--covers a number of underdone melodies, from Stevie Wonder's "Rocket Love" to the Guess Who's "Undun" with composer/original band guitarist Randy Bachman offering his sonic inflections to the song. Disc high points include the smokin' jam "It Might As Well Be Spring," the sexy bossa nova of original track "Something in the Air Between Us" and the beautiful cover of "Eli, Eli" by Second World War Holocaust hero and poet Hannah Senesh. It is a brave and haunting number that Milman does great justice to. --Denise Sheppard

Well he only has a handful of studio albums. I think I would start with the first one - Texas Flood. If you want a good overview of his career, with lots of biography and mostly live stuff with some studio tracks mixed in, this is a good box set (3 CD + 1 DVD), and it's pretty cheap if you get it used (click on image):

This review is from: Seashores of Old Mexico (Audio CD)

I heard this on our community radio this week (WOMR on Cape Cod) and I thought that I had heard every Willie Nelson record. This was a sweet (and late)delight. The recording was made in 1987 and both singers are at the top of their form. This is an absolutely effortless album. There is some wonderful duets and some really outstanding instrumental work on this CD. I would have traded the "Yesterday" cut for any number of Nelson or Haggard songs but the remaining cuts are top rate. I would recommend this CD to any Willie Nelson fan and it may turn on a few folks to (Mighty) Merle Haggard that haven't given him a chance. I recommend this one from a true Willie fan.

Haggard's finest moment, May 2, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: His Epic Hits (Audio CD)

This time period is when Hag was at his best. His voice is the greatest to ever sing a country tune. Going where the lonely go is Merle at his best. He has always had that distinct style with The Strangers and it is at it's most evident here. What am I gonna do is one of the best drinking songs ever. My Favorite Memory, You Tak Me For Granted, I wish a buck was still silver, c.c. waterback(with George Jones), and someday when things are good are all country standards. A lot of these songs aren't performed by him on t.v and I don't know why? This was the first Hag record I was exposed to years ago and it still up there with the best. I drink to this cd at least twice a week. I am going to go see him perform on May 7 at Bay St. Louis. Trust me, buy this album. It is more than worth it.

1. Reasons To Quit 3:32
2. You Take Me For Granted 2:43
3. That's The Way Love Goes 3:03
4. Are The Good Times Really Over (I Wish A Buck Was Still Silver) 4:14
