Greatest Hits -- enhanced CD

The Doors

1980/1996 Elektra Records

Amazon.com

A great singles band that often got a little unraveled on its album-only epics, the Doors are predictably remembered as Deeper Artists than some of their (especially Jim Morrison's) pretensions merit. But those 45s really were great. They dominate this disc, with "Light My Fire" (the album version) and "Hello I Love You" banging by to complement the moodier "Riders on the Storm" (also at LP length) and a live "Roadhouse Blues" rescued from An American Prayer. Predictably, the record closes with a few other non-AM tracks, including "The End." But most of the real meat is in the stuff that made it to the jukeboxes. --Rickey Wright

"Hello, I Love You" (Morrison)
"Light My Fire" (Krieger, Morrison)
"People Are Strange" (Morrison, Krieger)
"Love Me Two Times" (Krieger)
"Riders On The Storm" (Morrison, The Doors)
"Break On Through" (Morrison, The Doors)
"Roadhouse Blues" (live) (Morrison, The Doors)
"Touch Me" (Krieger)
"L.A. Woman" (Morrison, The Doors)
"Love Her Madly" (Krieger)
"The Ghost Song" (Morrison)
"The End" (Morrison, The Doors)

The Long Run -- CD

Eagles

1979/1990 Elektra Records

The Long Run took almost two years to complete and saw the Eagles move in a more hard rock direction that they started going in with its predecessor, 1976's Hotel California. When released in September 1979, The Long Run debuted at #2 on Billboard's Pop Albums chart and a week later hit #1 dethroning Led Zeppelin's In Through the Out Door and was the last #1 album of the 1970s where it reigned for eight weeks and has sold over seven million copies to date in the US alone (it was certified Gold and Platinum in early 1980 by the R.I.A.A.).

Infused with a good dose of masculine, edgy vocals and clever lyrics intended to bewilder, this collection of Steely Dan is a much welcomed antidote to today's vacuous, image driven, reality-show produced musical offerings. Steely Dan's music makes such an impression that you shouldn't be surprised if one day out the blue you have a strange compulsion to utter "it's your favorite foreign movie" for no reason at all. It's the "Dan" effect. Enjoy, and while you're at it, Google "Steely Dan" for the meaning behind the band's name. Those sly musicians!

Hard Promises -- CD

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

1981/1990 MCA Records

Amazon.com

Tom Petty's love affair with the more pop-oriented output of the Byrds and Dylan at their mid-'60s prime continued to find an increasingly wide audience in the '80s--and damned if some people didn't persist in calling it "new wave." Go figure. If writing hook-laden, instantly memorable pop-rock songs was both a sign of genius and one of music's toughest feats, Hard Promises (and its FM evergreens, "The Waiting" and "A Woman in Love") confirmed that Petty was one skinny, little, hard-working prodigy. Picking up effortlessly where *** the Torpedoes left off, Petty and the equally conscientious Heartbreakers took nothing about their newfound fame for granted, delivering their fourth strong effort in a row, this one increasingly seasoned with touches of their Southern roots. The title hints at the tough underbelly beneath the jangly veneer of Petty's ever-accessible songwriting, exemplified here by "Nightwatchman," "Something Big," and "The Criminal Kind." All tracks on this edition have been upgraded via digital remastering, and the album's original inner artwork and lyrics have also been restored. --Jerry McCulley

Who Made Who (Maximum Overdrive Soundtrack) -- CD

AC/DC

1986 Atlantic Records

Who Made Who is a hard rock album by Australian band AC/DC, released in 1986 as the soundtrack to the Stephen King movie Maximum Overdrive. King would allude to the album's title song in the 1990 revised and expanded edition of his novel The Stand, where a survivor of the novel's flu pandemic changes the lyrics to "Flu made who." Three tracks on the album — "Who Made Who" and the instrumentals "D.T." and "Chase the Ace" — were newly written and recorded by AC/DC. The rest were taken from the band's previous albums. Only one song, "Ride On," is from the Bon Scott era; all of the others feature Brian Johnson. The album reached #11 in the UK and #33 in the US, and has sold 5 million copies in the USA. Who Made Who was re-released in 2003 as part of the AC/DC remasters series.

1. "Who Made Who" 3:27
2. "You Shook Me All Night Long" 3:30
3. "D.T." (instrumental) M. Young, A. Young 2:53
4. "Sink the Pink" 4:13
5. "Ride On" M. Young, A. Young, Bon Scott 5:51
6. "Hells Bells" 5:12
7. "Shake Your Foundations" 3:53
8. "Chase the Ace" (instrumental) M. Young, A. Young 3:01

Go To Heaven -- CD

Grateful Dead

1980 Arista Records

Alabama Getaway, November 5, 2002
By Bilbo Baggins (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Go to Heaven (Audio CD)

I remeber this album as one of the first Dead albums that the production started sounding full and worthy of the dead rythym section in the studio. Alabama Getaway is a perfect blend of commercially slick radio friendly sound while still retaining Jerry and Bob's superior technique and road earned mastery of subtle riffing and rythmic augmentation. Althea is so Deadly it defines the power of artistic hippy musical apptitude. I love this album because it is presentable to the mainstream but retains its freak flag flying high buried deep in the highest production fidelity money can buy. If you don't have a fully developed dead ear for psychadelic sound you can start your journey on track number one of Go to Heaven and work your way back to the first Dead Album. Enjoy the research. May the force be with you.

Side one

"Alabama Getaway" (Garcia, Hunter) – 3:36
"Far From Me" (Mydland) – 3:40
"Althea" (Garcia, Hunter) – 6:51
"Feel Like a Stranger" (Barlow, Weir) – 5:07

Side two

"Lost Sailor" (Barlow, Weir)– 5:54
"Saint of Circumstance" (Barlow, Weir) – 5:40
"Antwerp's Placebo (The Plumber)" (Hart, Kreutzmann) – 0:38
"Easy to Love You" (Barlow, Mydland) – 3:40
"Don't Ease Me In" (Traditional) – 3:13

Restless -- CD

Shelby Lynne

1995 Magnatone Records

Amazon.com

Producer Brent Maher had to do something with his time after his prize clients, the Judds, broke up, and in Shelby Lynne, he has found one of the few women in Nashville who can match Wynonna Judd in vocal firepower. In 1993, Maher produced and co-wrote Lynne's Temptation, a terrific album of big-band country swing which somehow got lost in the shuffle. Lynne's sequel,Restless, is a return to the country mainstream after her left-turn detour through swing. When Lynne opens all the stops in her throat and just wails, as she does on the album's first single "Slow Me Down," there's no mistaking the sheer strength of her voice. But there's a lot more to her talent than that; she can down shift into a conversational murmur, as she does on "Talkin' to Myself," and still make you hang on every word--just by the way she maintains a full, intense tone even at the lowest volumes. Most importantly, her command of tricky rhythmic phrasing reminds one of Patsy Cline, Willie Nelson and few others in country-music history. All in all, this marks the full flowering of a major country talent and stands as one of the landmark events of 1995.--Geoffrey Himes

"Slow Me Down" (Stephanie Davis, Shelby Lynne, Brent Maher) – 3:14
"Another Chance at Love" (Maher, Allen Shamblin) – 2:25
"Talkin' to Myself Again" (Jamie O'Hara) – 3:18
"Restless" (Lynne, Maher, O'Hara) – 3:05
"Just for the Touch of Your Hand" (Lynne, Maher, O'Hara) – 3:56
"Hey Now Little Darling" (Lynne, Maher, O'Hara) – 3:02

Songs Of The West -- CD

Emmylou Harris

1992 Warner Western Records

Finally, several lost Emmylou Songs out on CD!!! Don't miss, October 30, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Songs of the West (Audio CD)

Forget about what you read above: Sure this is a retread but what this review doesn't tell you is that three of the most lovely songs on this CD have never before been available on Domestic CD. They were released on the LP CIMARRON which is apparently only availble on Australian CD and I have never seen it for sale. Since that Album has been out of print for years, I gladly paid the price for this CD just to have those songs. Also, if you have not had a decent sampling of Emmlyou's Western style and only been listening to her more pop oriented music, this will be an eye-opening experience for you. I popped this into the Car Stereo last Christmas while driving my parents about town and they loved it, having only heard her radio hits before. Accept this CD for what it is: an introduction to a side of Emmylou not heard on the Radio and a welcome chance to own a few precious songs not included on the PORTRAITS Boxed Set or on any other CD.

"I'll Be Your San Antone Rose" (Susanna Clark) - 3:43
"Even Cowgirls Get the Blues" (Rodney Crowell) - 3:56
"Amarillo" (Emmylou Harris/Rodney Crowell) - 3:05
"The Sweetheart of the Rodeo" (Emmylou Harris/Paul Kennerley) - 3:42
"Queen of the Silver Dollar" (Shel Silverstein) - 5:14
"One Paper Kid" [with Willie Nelson] (Walter Martin Cowart) - 2:58
"Rose of Cimarron" (Rusty Young) - 4:18
"Spanish Is a Loving Tongue" (Traditional/arr. Brian Ahern) - 3:20
"Cattle Call" (Tex Owens) - 2:52
"Montana Cowgirl" (Ray Park) - 2:45

Down The Old Plank Road - The Nashville Sessions -- CD

The Chieftains

2002 RCA Victor

Amazon.com

Now that bluegrass is (again) momentarily cool, leave it to the Chieftains to (again) plunge an all-star country cast into the Celtic wellsprings of old-time music, just as they did 10 years ago with 1992's Another Country. It's no surprise that the Chieftains can handle the rapacious rhythms of a hot fiddle tune; whether they can go toe-to-toe with the likes of Tim O'Brien, Béla Fleck, Ricky Skaggs, and Del McCoury is another matter. Rest assured they can, and they even coax some inspired jamming from Earl Scruggs--who sounds like he has something to prove on "Sally Goodin"--and a chilling vocal from Alison Krauss on "Molly Ban," the Celtic equivalent of "Fair and Tender Maidens." The Chieftains' only miscue comes in wasting Vince Gill's talents on a busily arranged "Dark as a Dungeon." While this set will likely appeal more to fans of contemporary Irish music than to hard-core twang fans, anyone who loves acoustic roots music will find these collaborations refreshing, if not down-right bracing. --Roy Kasten

Time (The Revelator) -- CD

Gillian Welch

2001 Acony Records

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

The considerable promise carried forth on Gillian Welch's first two albums is thoroughly fulfilled on Time (The Revelator). Welch has traded the guidance of her previous producer, T Bone Burnett, for the sympathetic studio skills of her longtime guitarist-harmony singer David Rawlings, who loosens the reins just enough to allow moments of spontaneity to sparkle within the duo's spare, eloquent playing. "Revelator" is an instant classic, perhaps the first great folk song of the 21st century. "I Want to Sing That Rock and Roll" is three minutes of Louvins/Everlys-style bliss. "April the 14th, Part 1" haunts its historical context with an achingly melancholy melody. It all leads up to the epic 14-minute "I Dream a Highway," one of the finest closing tracks ever put on record. --Peter Blackstock

21 -- CD

Adele

2011 Columbia Records

Editorial Reviews

21 is the eagerly awaited sophomore album from British singer-songwriter Adele. It’s the follow up to Adele’s critically acclaimed, Grammy award winning debut album 19 (both named after her age at the time the songs were written). Recorded in Malibu and London, 21 offered Adele the opportunity to work with such luminary producers and songwriters as Rick Rubin, Paul Epworth, Ryan Tedder, Dan Wilson and Fraser T. Smith, as well as continuing to work with Francis “Eg” White and Jim Abbiss.

This new collection of songs showcases the growth of this incredible artist, who at the very young age of twenty two, exhibits the poise of a seasoned veteran. Adele’s music takes some new direction while staying true to her signature style. “I discovered lots of artists I'd never heard of, particularly Wanda Jackson, Allison Krauss, Yvonne Fair, Andrew Bird, Neko Case, Lady Antebellum and Steel Drivers who I fell in love with. Then I delved in to more from artists I've loved forever - Mary J. Blige, Kanye West, Elbow, Mos Def, Alanis Morissette, Tom Waits and Sinead O'Connor. There's something in every single one of these artists that have really really inspired 21.”
