What Are You Listening To?

Well, just had my third amazon reseller telling me they don't have Paulistana! I'm cursed. Oh well, will keep trying. I have four of her albums on order now thanks to your endless hype, so better damn well be worth it! :angry-cussingblack:

Look at all the trouble you had with Jon Cleary. I think maybe you are cursed. I also think it's time you quit opting for the cheap $2.99 discs from these no name sellers and start paying retail from Amazon itself. The service alone (read: lack of headaches and worries) is worth whatever they charge for a given item.

Actually, the Cleary *was* from Amazon itself! And I've ordered probably 100+ CDs over the past year from amazon used, never had as much trouble with a single album as I've had with Paulistana. Oh well, I'm not really that upset, I can barely keep up with all the other new music as it is! I'm not in a hurry.

I try to post back in this thread about ones I've gotten, but there are so many, I'm losing track... I've listened to Allman Bros. Fillmore today, O'Connor Jam Session (wife loves that one), E.F. and L.A.'s Porgy & Bess (that one's awesome!), etc.

Anyway, I'm spending enough $$ as it is, gotta go used to justify to myself the outflux.

B.B. King

Simone On Simone CD

Simone

2008 Koch Records

Simone on Simone
Simone
Koch Records
Airwaves: Jazz
Being the daughter of a legendary artist comes with its own set of issues and complications. Most children of prominent musical artists that enter the business choose their own instrument. Simone has taken on an extra set of challenges by following in her mother’s footsteps as a vocalist.

She’s been one of the prominent members of the group Liquid Soul, and spent time on Broadway in the lead roles of the musicals Rent and Aida. For her first solo recording, she pays tribute to her mother’s legacy. For many a jazz fan, there will never be another Nina Simone.

The younger Simone is fully aware of that, and doesn’t attempt to replicate her mother’s work. Armed with arrangements of over 50 of her mother’s famous recordings, Simone sets out to make her own mark in the genre of jazz vocals. What you will find is a fine, accomplished artist with her own voice, her own dynamics, and her own delivery. While her covers of these pieces do not redefine them, Simone creates her own distinct versions, and attaches her identity to them.

Simone’s stage experience does her well here. There is an extra dose of voice control that is lacking in so many of today’s younger generations of vocalists. The leadoff track is symbolic of a passing of the torch, so to speak. It’s a live recording of “Music for Lover’s,” recorded with her mother in Ireland. You can hear the pride in the elder Simone’s voice as she introduces her daughter. It is pride that is well deserved.

1. Music for Lovers [Live with Nina Simone in Ireland] - Simone, Howard
2. Gal from Joe's - Simone, Ellington
3. Go to Hell - Simone, Bailey
4. Keeper of the Flame - Simone, Derringer
5. I Hold No Grudge - Simone, Badalamenti
6. Love Me or Leave Me - Simone, Donaldson
7. Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair - Simone, Latimer
8. I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free - Simone, Lamb
9. How Long Must I Wander - Simone, Irvine
10. Don't You Pay Them No Mind - Simone, Ahlert
11. Work Song - Simone, Adderley
12. Child in Me - Simone, Kelly, Lisa Simone

I hear you Pauly, I try to keep my music budget to $200ish a month. I can get 10 to 20 CD's if I buy new, or I can get 30 to 50 if I buy used. More is good! :music-listening:

It does help that I have the Used Music Dealer a few blocks from home, he has also led me to music I would have never found, like Eliane Elias! :eusa-clap: :text-thankyoublue:

As you can see from today's posts, I've spent nearly $50 on two new ones and I still have more to post. :teasing-tease: So much music, so little time!

The hard part is finding good, consistent and honorable used music dealers.

This one came today also, it was $6.99 new at amazon....they have 3 left. It is not her best, but it sounds good so far....

Kissed By Nature -- CD

Eliane Elias

2002 RCA Victor

For a long time, Eliane Elias seemed like a fixture at Blue Note. The Brazilian singer/pianist started recording for that well-known jazz label in the late '80s, and she was still on Blue Note when the 21st century arrived. But in 2002, Elias did the unexpected and moved to RCA; Kissed by Nature is her first RCA release. For the most part, this is a vocal album, although Elias does get in some likable solos -- and this time, she emphasizes relaxed, laid-back Brazilian pop-jazz. Kissed by Nature is essentially Brazilian easy listening, although it isn't bloodless elevator Muzak; even at her most commercial, Elias probably has too much substance and integrity for the average smooth jazz/NAC station. One thing she doesn't have is a great voice. While Elias is an excellent pianist, her voice is undeniably thin -- as a vocalist, she doesn't have a fantastic range by any means. But despite Elias' obvious limitations as a singer, her vocals (some in English, some in Portuguese, and some wordless) are pleasant enough on caressing pop-jazz originals like "A Volta," "Balancê," and the title track. No one will accuse Elias' singing of being in a class with the five-star performances of Gal Costa or Ithamara Koorax, but she does bring warmth and sincerity to her singing -- and those things count for something. Most of the material on Kissed by Nature was written or co-written by Elias; the exception is a medley of songs by Brazilian superstar Djavan, and that medley is arguably the album's standout track (which isn't to say that Elias' own writing isn't respectable). Kissed by Nature won't go down in history as one of Elias' essential releases, but it's a decent effort that's worth hearing if you need a dose of Brazilian mood music. ~ Alex Henderson, All Music Guide

Finally, finally giving this one a close listen. Been meaning to for the last week or so since I got it, but always got distracted. Have a quiet house this morning, so can listen carefully and turn it up! The album does have a great New Orleans feel to it - as far as I can tell since I've never actually been there. Great musicianship. Recording quality is good, and the mix is kind of interesting - dunno if it's intentional or not (probably so), but the drums seem to "cover" - spatially - all the other instruments. I mean, you can hear everything else, it's quite clear, but in terms of soundstage the drums are huge, while the rest of the instruments are more precisely placed. That does seem to be true in general of many recordings with drums, but it's more apparent in this one, to me.

I love the piano and drums on C'mon Second Line! :eusa-clap:

The brass and bass on Big Chief are great. Good drums/bongo here, too.

And holy shit! Burnt Mouth Boogie is an amazing piano solo! Some very interesting timings in there.

Anyway, this is a really fun album! Definitely a toe-tapper. Great piano all around. Highly recommended. (Though if you want to purchase, do it through Cleary's own site - JonCleary.com - as it's not available anywhere else, despite what amazon says.)

Thanks, Zing!

(I can *totally* hear Lady Bianca singing Pick Up the Pieces! )

Did I not say so? That solo makes me want to sell my piano. I honestly don't know how a human can do those things with just two hands.

The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars -- CD

David Bowie

1972/1999 Virgin U.S. Records

Amazon.com essential recording

After flirting with heavy guitar rock ("The Man Who Sold the World") and lighter pop ("Hunky Dory"), Bowie found middle ground on Ziggy Stardust. The creation of the Ziggy Stardust persona would live on well after Bowie shed the alien skin, marking the first rock concept album by a sexually ambiguous, artistically bent musician who confounded critics at every turn. A blend of dramatic strings, swaggering saxophones, jagged guitars, and theatrical arrangements, the album's darker rock numbers like "It Ain't Easy," "Moonage Daydream," "Ziggy Stardust," and the irresistible "Suffragette City," still serve as solid excursions into the future (then and now) of rock. The buoyant "Hang on to Yourself" and the dreamy "Star" offer hints of optimism in Ziggy's bleak world. The dramatic "Rock 'n' Roll Suicide" and the image-heavy "Star Man" ("he'd like to come and meet us but thinks he'd blow our minds!") no doubt provided plenty of stage-worthy moments when Ziggy toured in the '70s, but years later they still thrill. Bowie blew our minds! --Lorry Fleming
