Erroll Garner had a long and exceptional career as one of the giants of Jazz Piano. Other than some of his earliest and latest recorded work, his output compares favorably with anyone in that field. The question remains; what was his best work? I believe you will find it on this album.

You’d be so nice to come home to

Dancing The Blues -- CD

Taj Mahal

1993 Private Music

Let's dance!, January 6, 2001

This review is from: Dancing the Blues (Audio CD)

Dancing the Blues is one of my very favorite CD's by one of my very favorite artists Taj Mahal. It's great to listen to, great to dance to and every song is a living thing.

I first saw Taj Mahal in 1972 and was blown away by his performance and command and knowledge of the music that he played and sang. since then I have been lucky enough to see him two other times, on each occasion I received an education in the music as well as having an all out good time.

Dancing the Blues represents the energy, love and respect which Taj has for music. There is a wide range of music from the motown sounds of Taj's excellent version of the four top's "Sugarpie Honeybunch" (oh no I'm in junior high again)to Chester (the wolf) Burnett' "Sitting on Top of the World". I love Taj's version of Mockingbird, with the help of Etta James - there is nothing like it - I could listen to it again and again.

This is an album I strongly recommend for anyone who loves the blues.

"Blues Ain't Nothin'" (Taj Mahal) – 4:12
"Hard Way" (Grover McDaniel, T-Bone Walker) – 2:51
"Strut" (Mahal) – 3:39
"Going to the River" (Dave Bartholomew, Fats Domino) – 6:30
"Mockingbird" (Charlie Foxx, Inez Foxx) – 3:54
"Blue Light Boogie" (Jessie Mae Robinson) – 4:03

An Evening of Acoustic Music -- CD

This review is from: Evening of Acoustic Music (Audio CD)

This one's not BRAND new, but very recent & apparently only being discovered by a wide audience. LIVE Taj is a phenomena to be witnessed - ask anybody that's been on one of the Blues Cruises with him. Its tough to gauge his disks at first glance, because some contain different versions of the same songs. In his case, they're all good. This one's an acoustic gem. He does his interpretation of a Langston Hughes poem & teaches a German audience how to keep blues time. I won't waste your time with anything but something I can RAVE about. An original that exudes BLUES. One of my favorites & I have a LOT of blues disks.

"Stagger Lee"
"Dust My Broom"
"Take This Hammer"
"Blues with a Feeling"
"Big Legged Mamas Are Back in Style Again"
"Crossing"
"Come On in My Kitchen"

Blue Country Heart -- CD

Jorma Kaukonen

2002 Columbia Records

Amazon.com

Singer and guitarist extraordinaire Jorma Kaukonen was a devoted aficionado of early-20th-century rural music long before he cofounded Jefferson Airplane in 1965 and Hot Tuna some years later. On his new solo album, Kaukonen has found an imaginative setting to remind listeners how a fusion of styles and influences from both black and white musicians defined American country music in its formative decades. Included here are gems, both familiar and obscure, by the likes of Jimmie Rodgers, the Delmore Brothers, Jimmie Davis, Cliff Carlisle, and other country musicians who were clearly inspired by their blues cousins. Backed by the Nashville All-Stars, a supersonic string band comprising bluegrass masters Sam Bush (mandolin), Jerry Douglas (Dobro), Béla Fleck (banjo), and Byron House (stand-up bass), all playing on vintage 1920s and '30s acoustic instruments, Kaukonen revives and vividly reinterprets these blues-drenched country classics for a new generation of listeners. --Bob Allen

"Blue Railroad Train" (Lionel Alton Delmore, Rabon Delmore) – 3:44
"Just Because" (Hubert A. Nelson, James D. Touchstone) – 4:16
"Blues Stay Away from Me" (L. Delmore, R. Delmore, Henry Glover, Wayne Raney) – 3:28
"Red River Blues" (Jimmie Davis) – 3:25
"Bread Line Blues" (Bernard Slim Smith) – 4:38
"Waiting for a Train" (Jimmie Rodgers) – 3:26
"Those Gambler's Blues" (Rodgers) – 3:07
"Tom Cat Blues" (Jelly Roll Morton) – 3:05
"Big River Blues" (L. Delmore) – 3:01
"Prohibition Blues" (Clayton McMichen) – 4:13
"I'm Free from the Chain Gang Now" (Lou Herscher, Saul Klein) – 3:28

In The Dark -- CD

Grateful Dead

1987 Arista Records

Amazon.com essential recording

Hardcore Deadheads always equate this 1987 comeback record with commercial acceptance and a watered-down fan base, but while those assertions are indeed accurate, step back and you'll hear an album full of strong material and equally solid, live-in-the-studio performances. It's more than coincidence that songs such as "Touch of Grey" (the band's only top 10 hit), "Hell in a Bucket," "West L.A. Fadeaway," and "Throwing Stones" all became staples of the Dead's last decade of touring. While longtime fans will probably have no use (or desire) for this release (especially since the CD version omits the brilliant "Brother Esau"), it remains one of the band's most successful studio forays and the quintessential icebreaker for newcomers. --Marc Greilsamer

Side one

"Touch of Grey" (Garcia, Hunter) – 5:47
"Hell in a Bucket" (Barlow, Weir) – 5:35
"When Push Comes to Shove" (Garcia, Hunter) – 4:05
"West L.A. Fadeaway" (Garcia, Hunter) – 6:39

Side two

"Tons of Steel" (Mydland) – 5:15
"Throwing Stones" (Barlow, Weir) – 7:18
"Black Muddy River" (Garcia, Hunter) – 5:58
"My Brother Esau" (Barlow, Weir) - 4:20

"My Brother Esau" was omitted from the LP and CD releases of In the Dark, but was included on the cassette and on international releases.

Greatest Hits -- CD

The Lovin' Spoonful

2000 Buddha Records

The Lovin' Spoonful was one of the very first bands to take part in the folk-rock boom of the mid-1960s, creating something of an East Coast equivalent to the Byrds' seminal L.A. jangle. The original group's lineup was regrettably short-lived, all their classic material getting released on Buddha records, so the label's definitive GREATEST HITS collection presented none of the usual cross-licensing difficulties.
All the highlights of the Spoonful's '60s discography are here--the airy, transcendent pop of the jubilant "Do You Believe in Magic" and the almost Association-like "You Didn't Have to Be So Nice," the tougher rock sound of "Summer in the City," the romantic ballad "Darling Be Home Soon," and more. The rootsier side of the ensemble can be heard as well, on the likes of "Did You Ever Have to Make Up Your Mind" and "Jug Band Music." Led by John Sebastian's mellifluous voice and graceful songwriting and Zal Yanovsky's chiming guitar, the Spoonful turned out some of the most memorable singles of the '60s, and they're all right here.

Priceless Jazz Collection -- CD

Freddie Hubbard

1998 GRP Records

Gathered mostly from two of Freddie Hubbard's classic recordings, THE BODY & THE SOUL and THE ARTISTRY OF FREDDIE HUBBARD, this 1998 GRP Records collection is a visit to the early days of a jazz trumpet legend. Bursting out of the tradition of Clifford Brown and Fats Navarro, Hubbard quickly laid claim to their legacy of hot, technically daring improvisation and brave, big sound. Hubbard emerged onto the scene as such a fully blown player that it's hard to believe how young he was when he made these recordings.Hubbard is joined here by such standouts as Wayne Shorter (tenor saxophone), Cedar Walton (piano), and Curtis Fuller (trombone). Hubbard's ability to take control of a theme and rework it with both bravado and nuance is evident in all the tracks. Hubbard's take on "Body and Soul" is beautifully gentle, whereas he charges into the up-tempo "Aries" with shimmering force, gliding along fearlessly above the other horns.

Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf -- Remastered CD

Jimmy Smith

Outstanding reissue of a keyboard classic, September 25, 2007
By J. B Brent (Oak Ridge, Tennessee USA) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf (Reis) (Dig) (Audio CD)

Originally recorded in January 1964, WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOLF was a Creed Taylor production released on vinyl by Verve Records. The arrangements for most tunes start with a smooth orchestral opening and Smith playing melody. The orchestra crescendos and departs to make room for Jimmy Smith's incredible improvisations. This is best illustrated on "Slaughter" and the first version of the title cut.
More mainstream but nonetheless enjoyable are Smith's comparatively low-key versions of Bacharach's "Wives and Lovers" and Toots' standard "Bluesette."
It's been a long but worthwhile wait for this essential piece of Jimmy's prolific catalog. The disc's packaging is faithful to the original gatefold record cover.

Thank heaven Pacific Jazz (thanks to former Buddy trumpeter Dean Pratt) is rereleasing Buddy's big band albums of the 60's and

Sting

2001 A&M Records

Jazzier than typical Sting, but very beautiful, November 27, 2001
By Manny Hernandez "@askmanny" (Bay Area, CA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)

This review is from: ...all this time (Audio CD)
Sting comes back with this live recording made on September 11 (he respectfully dedicates it to the victims of the tragedy). This time around he revisits tunes from all his periods (The Police, early and late solo material) but with a very jazzy feel to most of the songs.

What can be said about this album, that has not been said about Sting at some point? It's brilliant: he grabs his songs and virtually reinvents them, to the point where they sound almost like different songs. This is the case with almost all songs in this recording which, like all previous Sting works, is impeccably recorded and produced.

Particularly enjoyable I found his beautiful rendition of the Police classics "Don't stand so close to me" and "Roxanne" as well as the tracks included from his least popular album, 'Mercury Falling' and the mix of "A Thousand Years" and "PerfectLove... Gone Wrong," much in the same style of his earlier live double-album. Interesting results his Traffic-like version of his very own "If you love somebody set them free"... Grrrrooovy!!!! New tracks anyone? Yes! "Dienda" in the style of his interpretation of the Zappa song, "The Idiot *** song" which some lucky people were able to hear back during some sessions he played in Chicago several years ago.

Overall, one of those jewels that oughta become part of your musical collection.

All songs written by Sting, except where noted.

"Fragile" - 4:35
"A Thousand Years" (Kipper, Sting) - 3:02
"Perfect Love...Gone Wrong" - 4:11
"All This Time" - 5:20
"The Hounds of Winter" - 4:29
"Mad About You" (not included on the US edition)
"Don't Stand So Close to Me" - 2:15
"When We Dance" - 4:52
"Dienda" (Kenny Kirkland, Sting) - 3:12
"Roxanne" - 3:36
"If You Love Somebody Set Them Free" - 4:57
"Brand New Day" - 4:46
"Fields of Gold" - 3:50
"Moon over Bourbon Street" - 2:55
"If I Ever Lose My Faith in You" - 4:31
"Every Breath You Take" - 5:04

In Hi-Fi Stereo -- CD

Mindi Abair

2010 Telarc/Heads Up

4.0 out of 5 stars Soul/Jazz retro grooves., May 18, 2010
By apricots & jazz - See all my reviews
This review is from: In Hi-Fi Stereo (Audio CD)

Sultry Soul/Jazz from this beautiful lady saxophonist, the gentle or gritty summery grooves ooze spontaneity.
The set (Mindi's sixth effort and her first with Heads Up Records) reminds a lot of some soul-jazz recordings of the '60s and '70s and combines quality mid-tempo instrumentals with vocal cuts.
She hits the funkier end of Soul/Jazz.
There are several funky grooves like "Any Way You Wanna", "All Star", "Down For The Count" and "Girl's Night Out".
On the vocal tip (maybe the less interesting part of the album) you may enjoy "Get It Right" and the cover of James Brown's "It's A Mans Mans Mans World", which showcases some great, bluesy vocals by the ubiquitous singer Lalah Hathaway (currently there are too many smooth jazz albums where Lalah appears as a guest singer).
Tracks like the sleek "L'Esprit Nouveau" (in French for 'The New Spirit') and mid-tempo "Let The Whole World Know (Sing Your Song)" will make you want more from this very talented artist, who has integrated more vocals on this album in order to widen her musical horizon and to reach into a wider audience.
Mindi has choosen catchy melodies and contemporary grooves, well produced and well played, definitely worthy of your time.
Recommended!

1. Any Way You Wanna
2. All Star
3. L'Espirit Nouveau
4. Get Right
5. Be Beautiful

Life Less Ordinary -- CD

Mindi Abair

2006 GRP/Verve Records

Smooth jazz saxophonist Mindi Abair made a name for herself with groove-oriented compositions and solid horn work, a combination that is both passionate and easy on the ears. LIFE LESS ORDINARY is the artist's fourth solo release, and contains plenty of the artist's trademark funky instrumentals ("The Joint"), atmospheric ballads ("Rain"), and some vocal cuts (the trip-hop-inspired opener "Do You Miss Me?" and a faithful cover of Rickie Lee Jones's "It Must Be Love"). In all, Abair has turned in a diverse, creative set that won't disappoint fans of her early albums.

The Christmas Song -- CD

Nat King Cole

1961/1986 Capitol Records

Amazon.com essential recording

Countless singers have recorded the now-famous title track to this 14-song collection, but none have explored its evocative nuances as fully as the man who first brought it into our living rooms--Nat King Cole. Then again, his honeyed throat and refined delivery allowed him to make just about any song his own--even ubiquitous carols such as "O Holy Night" and "Adeste Fideles." Cole's gift--the thing that made him beloved by grandmas and jazzbos alike--was his ability to conjure images so vivid, you need only close your eyes in order to see, say, a snow-swept town square ("Caroling, Caroling") or that holy scene from 2,000 years ago ("Away in a Manger"). --David Sprague

Soulful Christmas -- CD

Aaron Neville

1993 A&M Records

Aaron Neville's Soulful Christmas is at once familiar yet progressive, traditional, prayerful, heartfelt, fun, and sexy. Neville lends his angelic voice to timeless holiday standards, resulting in one of the more compelling American holiday albums of the 1990s. Neville's treatment of classics such as "O Holy Night," "Silent Night," and "O Little Town of Bethlehem" is absolutely stirring, and he infuses these lullabies with so much warmth and sincerity that they can even touch the hardest, most cynical audiences. Neville also covers more contemporary tunes, such as "Please Come Home for Christmas," and augments his warm renditions of "The Christmas Song" and "White Christmas" with classic pop arrangements, filled with lush strings, piano, and even saxophone. The real gems, however, include the irresistibly swingin' "Such a Night," which should become mandatory for any Christmas party, and the equally intoxicating, hand clapping "Louisiana Christmas Day." The album ends on a spiritual tone with the tender "Star Carol" and the moving, organ-accompanied "The Bells of St. Mary's." Neville wholly succeeds in crafting a fun, Cajun-spiced yet traditional Christmas album, which manages to capture all of the joy, passion, spirituality ,and nostalgia which goes along with the holiday season. ~ Jose F. Light of the Stable -- Remastered CD

Emmylou Harris

1979/2004 Warner Bros./Rhino Records

Amazon.com

First released in 1979, Light of the Stable has survived the passage of time and received much acclaim over the years. Updated in 2004 with three new tunes and insightful liner notes, its light now shines even brighter. A host of well-known voices and players join Harris on Christmas songs both familiar and unexpected. Among her guests are Dolly Parton, Rodney Crowell, Neil Young, Ricky Skaggs, James Burton, and Kate and Anna McGarrigle, the latter of whose lovely arrangements of the traditional "Cherry Tree Carol" and their own "Man Is an Island" are two of the bonus tracks.

Given its history and craft, Light of the Stable is more than just a seasonal collection. In many ways, it's shaped the sound of country Christmas records for the 25 years since its original release--yet the warm glow of its own artistry has never wavered. Consider it a little masterpiece. --Martin Keller
