Let Love Rule -- CD

Lenny Kravitz

1989 Virgin Records U.S.

Amazon.com

When Lenny Kravitz made his debut album, he was known in select circles as the pierced, tattooed love boy of Lisa Bonet, the actress then riding high with a starring role on The Cosby Show. Kravitz turned out to be an artist in his own right, and a talented musician who wrote, produced, and played nearly all the instruments on Let Love Rule. He seems to know precisely what he wants to say on this album; trouble is, it's all been said before, by the likes of Prince, John Lennon, and Sly Stone. There is skill and craft at work here, but genuine inspiration is another matter. The thick patchouli scent around songs such as "I Build This Garden for Us," "Flower Child," and the title track is nearly suffocating, while the would-be protest anthem "Mr. Cab Driver" is rather undercooked. Overall, Kravitz's groovy love-generation vibe makes him rock's answer to Austin Powers. --Daniel Durchholz

Supercharged -- CD

Down To The Bone

2007 Narada Jazz

Smoothjazz.com Review, June 19, 2007
By Sandy Shore (Monterey, CA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Supercharged (Audio CD)

With reckless, raw energy and rhythm hurling towards you at the speed of a slide trombone in the Tower of Power horn section, SUPERCHARGED is Smooth Jazz with a nitrous injection. This is DTTB's 7th release to date and by far the most irresistible. That's a big claim given the fact that this is the group that gave us "Long Way From Brooklyn" and "Electra Glide," two format staples. SUPERCHARGED burns rubber off the starting line with the title track and let me tell you, it never stops for gas. The guys added three additional horns to the already sizzling non-stop, sax-o-matic playing by Paul "Shilts" Wiemar. Founding member Stuart Wade produced and arranged the stellar SUPERCHARGED. He's managed to capture the very essence of funk and soul. Think Sly & the Family Stone, Average White Band, Booker T. & The MGs and the aforementioned T.O.P. Special guests include Hil St. Soul on the feel-good groove "Smile to Shine," Royer Ayres on the slick joint "Electric Vibes," and Corrina Greyson on the contagious "Shake It Up." Eleven tracks that say summer... even in the middle of winter. This is unabashed, pure, unadulterated, thick and gooey F.U.N.K. There are a lot of choices out there with regard to music these days. Down To The Bone's SUPERCHARGED just made the whole decision process much easier for you... CD it or download it, but load it and load it soon, `cuz summer's here and you're about to get funked. ~SANDY SHORE

Stand! -- CD

Sly and The Family Stone

1969/1990 Epic Records

The document of a musical revolution
, October 29, 1999
By Philip Eldring "Flow de Cologne" (Köln, Germany) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Stand (Audio CD)

This is one of the CDs you can't get away from. It was 1969 when this album by Sly & TFS was released and I bet the people haven't heard & seen something like this before. First of all the musical style: Too positive to be blues, too much rock to be soul and too much soul to be rock - the PROTOTYPE of a FUNK album. Then the look: Sly was the first one dressed in multi-colored clothes onstage what even inspired George Clinton for Parliament and -most of all- Funkadelic. Then they were a multi-racial group. The title track "Stand!" is more related to the Beatles' music in the first part of the song but is transforming into Sly's thang in second. Amazing ! Then the other tracks are reflecting every band member (remind Larry Graham's Central Station), they're full of political attitude (f.e. Stand!, Don't Call Me N*****, Whitey !; Sly's tracking down a guitar sound made with his mouth and Wah-Wah effect), sexual exploitation (a sharp bluesy track called "Sex Machine") and Pop standards ("Everyday People"). Wild things and topics were explored on this OVERLOOKED (yes, it is !)'69 masterpiece and you could also find a bunch of HipHop samples in here like Digital Underground's beat for the "Humpty Dance" (f.e.). It seems that the kids 2day are not interested in this music so the way to teach them simply is HipHop. Sampling kept the FUNK alive. But it's all about the promotion, then Sly would even beat out the Stones... !

Other suggestions are: "There's A Riot Going On", "Dance To The Music", "Life" and "Fresh."

Side one

"Stand!" – 3:08
"Don't Call Me ***, Whitey" – 5:58
"I Want to Take You Higher" – 5:22

"Sing a Simple Song" – 3:56

Side two

"Everyday People" – 2:21
"Sex Machine" – 13:45
"You Can Make It If You Try" – 3:37

She's So Unusual -- CD

Cindi Lauper

1983 Portrait Records (Import Japan)

Amazon.com

If Cyndi Lauper's She's So Unusual evokes memories dominated mostly by her cartoonish image, then try to get over it so you can pay attention to the music. Simply, Cyndi Lauper has a wonderful, emotive voice. Her vocals have an impish quality, but there's also tremendous strength, articulation, and nuance. Who would disagree that "Time After Time" (later covered by both Everything but the Girl and Miles Davis, if you need further proof of her credibility) is as heartstring-tugging as "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" is frivolous, or that "All Through the Night" is as longing as "She-Bop" is intense? The instrumental arrangements are quite inventive and rich, and although the musicality is pointedly '80s, the album sounds more winsome than dated. The title of Lauper's debut isn't self-deprecating or even self-parodying; it's self-congratulatory. Listen to it again, and you'll find this pleasure to be far from guilty. --Beth Bessmer

The Bells of Dublin -- CD

The Chieftains

1991 RCA Victor

The world's fastest way to get the holiday spirit!, December 3, 2002
By bensmomma "bensmomma" (Ann Arbor, Michigan) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE)
This review is from: The Bells of Dublin (Audio CD)

Every year I try to restrain myself until the day after Thanksgiving to bring out The Bells of Dublin. After that I play it almost continually until Christmas, and I never get tired of it. It starts up a giant holiday party in my heart.

From the moment the bells peel on the first track ("The Bells of Dublin"), calling in the season, to the angelic voice of the lad who begins the final medley (beginning with "Once in Royal David's City"), I love every bit. In between there is joy (Skyline Jig), beautiful melody (The Wexford Carol with Nanci Griffith) quiet reverence (O Holy Night with Rickie Lee Jones), the sweetness of voices in harmony (Il Est Ne with the McGarrigle Sisters), celebratory dancing I defy you to sit still to (The Wren medley), and even enough little tongue-in-cheek Irish subversiveness to avoid sentimentality (St. Stephen's Day Murders with Elvis Costello, The Rebel Jesus with Jackson Browne).

The Chieftains' worldclass expertise on traditional Irish instruments is front and center on this album, but the many famous guests also have lots of fun. I have never known a Christmas album that could come anywhere close to the Bells of Dublin for generating the holiday spirit.

All songs traditional, except as indicated.

"The Bells of Dublin/Christmas Eve" (with the bell-ringers of Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin) (Paddy Moloney)
"Past Three O'Clock" (with The Renaissance Singers)
"St. Stephen's Day Murders" (with Elvis Costello) (P. Moloney, E. Costello)
"Il Est Né/Ca Berger" (with Kate and Anna McGarrigle)
"Don Oiche Ud I mBeithil" (with Burgess Meredith)
"I Saw Three Ships A Sailing" (with Marianne Faithfull)
"A Breton Carol" (with Nolwen Monjarret)
"Carols Medley: O the Holly She Bears a Berry/God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen/The Boar's Head"
"The Wexford Carol" (with Nanci Griffith)
"The Rebel Jesus" (with Jackson Browne) (J. Browne)
"Skyline Jig" (P. Moloney)
"O Holy Night" (with Rickie Lee Jones)
"Medley: 'The Wren! The Wren!'/The Dingle Set - Dance/The Wren in the Furze/A Dance Duet - Reels/Brafferton Village/Walsh's Hornpipe/The Farewell" ("Wren in the Furze" by Kevin Conneff)
"Medley: Once in Royal David's City/Ding Dong Merrily on High/O Come All Ye Faithful" (with The Renaissance Singers)

My Favorite Things: Coltrane At Newport --CD

John Coltrane

2007 Impulse! Records

By his 1963 appearance at Newport, John Coltrane had already embraced the sinuous, exploratory modal form that marked his most striking recordings. MY FAVORITE THINGS: COLTRANE AT NEWPORT brings together performances from two of the legendary saxophonist's appearances at the Newport Jazz Festival: one from 1963 and the other from 1965. The set lists contain only a few extended pieces, the longer of which stretch upwards of 20 minutes.Coltrane performs here with his classic quintet--bassist Jimmy Garrison, pianist McCoy Tyner, and drummer Elvin Jones. On the '63 date, Roy Haynes sits in for Jones, and Haynes's effect on the music (he has a lighter touch and is more of a colorist) will strike the ear of those who know this period of Coltrane well. Another stand-out quality of the disc is the extended jam on "Impressions," released here for the first time in its entirety. The playing is transcendent throughout, making the disc a winning purchase for any Coltrane fan, not just collectors.

2. I Want to Talk About You - (previously unreleased)
3. My Favorite Things - (previously unreleased)

John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman -- CD

John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman

1963/1995 Impulse! Records

A unmitigated masterpiece, November 27, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman (Audio CD)

Simply put this has to be one of my favorite Cd's. Mere words can't express how well the combination of the John Coltrane Quartet sound and Johnny Hartman sounds. From 'They say it's wonderful' to 'Autumn serenade' all of the tracks are excellent to say the least. Johnny Hartman has one of the smoothest barritone singing voices I've ever heard. Listining to his voice on 'Lush life'(especially) gives me the chills. (I'd argue that their cover of that song is the best ever). This paired up with the already legendary sound of the John coltrane quartet makes this album not a must have but an essential for any coltrane fan. If you are even thinkg about buying this CD you've given it too much thought, BUY IT NOW! You wont regret it.

Side one

"Dedicated to You" (Sammy Cahn, Saul Chaplin, Hy Zaret) – 5:27

Side two

"You Are Too Beautiful" (Richard Rodgers, Lorenz Hart) – 5:32

A Motown Christmas -- CD

Best Christmas Album Ever!, November 9, 2001
By D. Belton "The Black Snob" (Florissant, MO USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Motown Christmas (Audio CD)

I'm biased, but I can remember this record (and I mean record, large black discs, look like giant black CDs) being played from the day after Thanksgiving until January 1st. We had the double record set, so it was like two hours of continuous Christmas style jammin' a la Motown. I can remember cutting a rug in the kitchen to Stevie singing "What Christmas Means To Me," and singing off-key with my mother to the Jackson 5 (who were ironically Jehovah Witnesses back then) belting out about how "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town." My favorite were Stevie's "One Little Christmas Tree" and Michael singing "All Alone On Christmas," as I grew older. The only song I didn't get when I was little was "My Favorite Things" by Diana Ross, but eventually I would grow to love every song on this album. And you just can't beat the Temptations singing "Frosty the Snowman" and "Rudolph the Rednosed Reindeer." Everyone just sounds like they're having so much fun. Whether they all enjoyed recording this album or not, there so much love and joy felt through every song, even the slow ones, you can't help but smile and do the bump with your sisters. It's not Christmas if I don't hear this album. I've been searching for one that has all of the original tracks on the original two-album set, so if anyone knows where I can get a copy in a good condition (other than jacking my mother's set) please, hook a sister up!

Side 1

"Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town" – The Jackson 5
"What Christmas Means to Me" – Stevie Wonder
"Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" – The Temptations
"My Favorite Things" – The Supremes
"Deck the Halls/Bring a Torch, Jeanette, Isabella" – Smokey Robinson
"I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" – The Jackson 5

Side 2

"Ave Maria" – Stevie Wonder
"Silent Night" – The Temptations
"Little Christmas Tree" – Michael Jackson
"God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen" – Smokey Robinson
"The Christmas Song" – The Jackson 5
"Joy to the World" – The Supremes

Side 3

"The Little Drummer Boy" – The Temptations
"Silver Bells" – The Supremes
"Someday at Christmas" – Stevie Wonder
"Frosty the Snowman" – The Jackson 5
"Jingle Bells" – Smokey Robinson
"My Christmas Tree" – The Temptations

Side 4

"White Christmas" – The Supremes
"One Little Christmas Tree" – Stevie Wonder
"Give Love on Christmas Day" – The Jackson 5
"It's Christmas Time" – Smokey Robinson
"Children's Christmas Song" – The Supremes
"Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" – The Jackson 5

Deguello -- CD

ZZ Top

1979 Warner Bros. Records

Amazon.com

First released in 1979, Deguello was three years in the making. Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill, and Frank Beard had disappeared into the sagebrush to recharge their batteries following their grueling World Texas Tour. They returned with a new antic sense of themselves that first appeared in songs like "Cheap Sunglasses," "She Loves My Automobile," and "Esther Be the One" and came to fruition almost four years later with Eliminator. Deguello forges the last link to the band's early blues-rock years, before they became the sleeker, less threatening entity that graced MTV during the '80s. Tunes like their rendering of David Porter and Isaac Hayes's steamy "I Thank You," the salacious "Hi Fi Mama," and the boastful "I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide" careen on the edges of good taste, but these guys didn't give a *** who they offended as long as they entertained. And, of course, they did entertain legions of fans with their ribald lyrics, off-kilter timing, and Gibbons's daredevil guitar wizardry. But ZZ Top isn't all hard edges and pinup fantasies; the heartbreakingly beautiful intro to their eccentric love song, "Fool for Her Stockings" rivals the lyricism of Jimi Hendrix's "The Wind Cries Mary." --Jaan Uhelszki

All songs by Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill and Frank Beard, except where noted.

Side A

"I Thank You" (Isaac Hayes, David Porter) – 3:23

"Manic Mechanic" – 2:37

Side B

"Dust My Broom" (Robert Johnson) – 3:06
"Lowdown in the Street" – 2:49
"Hi Fi Mama" – 2:23
"Cheap Sunglasses" – 4:48
"Esther Be the One" – 3:31

Jailbreak -- CD

Thin Lizzy

1976 Vertigo Records

Jailbreak, what a fantastic recording!, July 13, 2005
By Hellion Zephreid (Pittsburgh) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Jailbreak (Audio CD)

I remember buying this in the summer of 1976 after hearing "The Boys Are back in Town" on the radio a few times. That song is one of the top 10 songs ever! When I bought it as an LP (remember those?), I was so excited and distracted that I put the wrong side on the turntable. Instead of that song, out of the speakers came the title track JAILBREAK. Another timeless classic. Needles to say, the entire record of 9 songs was fantastic and there truly isn't a dud on here. Since then I have bought these songs on cassette, CD, and now the remastered version. Great story in the liner notes too. Buy it and read it for yourself. It is almost hard to believe the recorded output Lizzy put out in the years of 1975 through 1977. Quality too. Hell, "Johnny the Fox" also came out later that year in '76 and is every bit as good as this, unfortunately overlooked because of the lack of a hit. Personal favorites on here are "Romeo and the Lonely Girl", "Emerald", and "Warriors". I love them all. If you want some great rock songs with excellent twin guitar breaks, this is for you. See where Maiden, Leppard, and The Darkness got it from in the first place!

All songs written by Phil Lynott except where noted.

Side one

"Jailbreak" – 4:01
"Angel from the Coast" (Lynott, Brian Robertson) – 3:03
"Running Back" – 3:13
"Romeo and the Lonely Girl" – 3:55
"Warriors" (Lynott, Scott Gorham) – 4:09

Side two

"The Boys Are Back in Town" – 4:27
"Fight or Fall" – 3:45
"Cowboy Song" (Lynott, Brian Downey) – 5:16
"Emerald" (Gorham, Downey, Robertson, Lynott) – 4:03

On the 1996 Mercury CD reissue, "Angel from the Coast" and "Running Back" are listed as the second track with only one running time, making it appear to be a single song called "Angel from the Coast Running Back", and there is no third track listed. However, all the songs are sequenced as on the original LP release.

I have both versions of this cd, the gold and the original cd.
The sound on the gold cd is much clearer, especially the treble on the guitars, snare drums, cymbals and vocals.
It doesn't do much for the bass side of things, but the overall effect is a clearer sound with more clarity in the individual instruments. If you're a Montrose fan and you can get a decent price on this cd, get it! You won't be sorry.

"Rock the Nation" (Ronnie Montrose) - 3:03
"Bad Motor Scooter" (Sammy Hagar)- 3:41

"I Don't Want It" (Hagar, Montrose)- 2:58
"Good Rockin' Tonight" (Roy Brown) - 2:59
"Rock Candy" (Denny Carmassi, Bill Church, Hagar, Montrose)- 5:05
"One Thing on My Mind" (Hagar, Montrose, Sanchez) - 3:41
"Make It Last" (Hagar) - 5:31

When this record came out, pop music and rock and roll needed it. Gems like "Come On Come On" "Need Your Love" "Ain't That A Shame" "I Want You To Want Me" "Surrender" and "Clocks Strikes Ten" just jumped out of your speakers. The fans treated these guys like they were the Beatles. That they are not. But, Rick Nielsen can write a catchy tune and Robin Zander has a good voice. This album broke them in America and it deserves to be considered one of their classics.

One For The Road -- SACD

The Kinks

1980/2004 Arista/Koch Records

One Of The Best Live Albums Ever.,
December 27, 2006
By Anthony Nasti "Tony"
This review is from: One for the Road (Hybr) (Audio CD)

I received The Kinks' 1979 live album "One For The Road" today as a belated Christmas gift, and I must say I am stunned at how good it is. It is practically forgotten in the great pantheon of rock live albums (which include, among others, The Who's "Live At The Leeds", The Rolling Stones' "Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out" and The Allman Brothers' "Live At The Fillmore East"), and yet it rightfully belongs.

What you get on "One For The Road" are 19 (not counting introductions) solid, energetic performances of Kinks klassics such as "Lola", "All Day And All Of The Night", "You Really Got Me" and "Victoria" as well as a host of lesser known tracks like "Catch Me Now I'm Falling", "Low Budget" and "Attitude". There's also a fantastic version of their 1972 classic "Celluloid Heroes" that has an almost haunting effect.

The cd adds two bonus tracks, "20th Century Man" and a blazing finale of "David Watts". The cd has been remastered in SACD, and I must say the sound quality is fantastic. The liner notes are great, and overall this is definitely a great addition to your collection.
