What Are You Listening To?

^^^
That's the one I have.

Though I also have Thile's solo "How To Grow A Woman From The Ground" album, which I think has pretty much the same musicians as Punch Brothers, if I'm not mistaken. It's a real fun listen, IMO.

I also want to get the Goat Rodeo Sessions album Thile does with Yo-Yo Ma. The samples I've heard sound promising.

Goat Rodeo is awesome, I posted about that in (I think) one of the concert video threads.

Kid 'N Play's Funhouse.

All the chatter between songs is mildly amusing the first time. Then it's just annoying. If I were really ambitious perhaps I'd break out Audacity and edit these tracks. But it still wouldn't be as good as "2 Hype".

I was tempted to do that with a Janet Jackson CD years ago, but I tired of the music too first. :angelic-green:

Totally forgot how much I LOVE this collection!

I like their music video where Chris "Kid" Reid makes a cameo. Classic house party stuff, indeed.

By Arrangement -- 20 BitCD

Jim Hall

1998 Telarc Jazz

Long acclaimed for his understated lyrical approach to the guitar, Jim Hall's diverse arrangements on this CD are also first-class. His dazzling arrangement of John Lewis' "Django" features Hall with Pat Metheny, with both men on acoustic instruments for a change, accompanied only by drummer Terry Clarke and the occasional pizzicato accents of a 12-piece string section (violas and cellos!). Rarely has Gordon Jenkins' "Goodbye" been given such a fresh treatment; the brisk bossa nova rhythm, Joe Lovano's switch from clarinet to soprano sax midway in the piece, and Hall's interplay with Lovano and the strings, plus the dramatic sudden slowdown in tempo at the conclusion, make it stand out from the many recordings of this standard. The New York Voices provide a nice backdrop for Hall's solo on "Waltz for Debby," while Paul Desmond's rarely heard "Wendy" features the leader with the brilliant flugelhornist Tom Harrell, backed by a brass section. Hall's originals also merit praise: his lovely "October Song" has just a touch of melancholy with a fine viola solo backed by the strings following his solo introduction, while his challenging "Art Song" is a playful waltz. ~ Ken Dryden

STRINGS! -- CD

Pat Martino

1967/1991 Prestige/O.J.C. Records

Guitarist Pat Martino's second recording as a leader (which has been reissued on CD) finds him essentially playing advanced bop. His quintet (with Joe Farrell on tenor and flute, pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Ben Tucker and drummer Walter Perkins) really roars on an uptempo version of "Minority" and is diverse enough to come up with meaningful statements on four of Martino's originals. ~ Scott Yanow

1. Strings 5:37

2. Minority 9:20

3. Lean Years 8:37

4. Mom 7:20

5. Querido 6:07

Personnel: Pat Martino (guitar), Joe Farrell (tenor saxophone, flute), Cedar Walton (piano), Ben Tucker (bass), Dave Levin, Ray Appleton (percussion), Walter Perkins (drums).

Next Exit -- CD

Grover Washington, Jr.

1992 Columbia Records

Grover Washington, Jr. was probably the most successful smooth jazz artist of his generation. His blend of R&B, soul, pop, and jazz earned him a glowing reputation with consumers and "quiet storm" DJs. Washington's discography boasts three decades of creative and heartfelt albums, and his 1992 release, NEXT EXIT is no exception. His velvety sax style blends well with vocal performances by Nancy Wilson on "Your Love," Levi Stubbs on "Till You Return to Me," Paula Holloway and Man Slaughter on "Check Out Grover," and others. Propelled largely by drum machines and electronic keyboards, NEXT EXIT has a distinctly '90s flair. Highlights include Washington's passionate soprano sax solo on the salsa-inflected "Only for You (Siempre Para Ti)" and his offbeat synthesized version of Paul Desmond's "Take Five."

After I bought Captain & Tennille's new CD, I really didn't know what to expect, because the suspense was so great due to the fact that they hadn't recorded an album in over twenty years. I must say that I was pleasantly surprised and most of all, I commend Toni Tennille for such good writing abilities, "Love Survives" is a complete winner, she wrote it, sings it, and people absolutely cherish her versatility and on-stage presence.
