Back To Oakland -- CD

Tower of Power

1974/1990? Warner Bros. Records

Paying tribute to their hometown, Tower Of Power's BACK TO OAKLAND is a landmark in the group's history. Sporting the syncopated instrumental "Oakland Stroke" that bookends the disc, this set is the very definition of the Tower Of Power sound and style, powered by both the ultra-funky rhythm section and the world-renowned Tower Of Power horns.Vocalist Lenny Williams is the guiding light through R&B-flavored cuts like the bouncing "Don't Change Horses (In the Middle of the Stream)" and the dramatic ballad "Just When We Start Makin' It." It's the signature instrumental "Squib Cakes," however, that opens the floodgates to all the funky power that the band can muster; it's the group's premiere showcase, with hearty contributions from keyboardist Chester Thompson, drummer David Garibaldi, and the entire stellar horn section.

Warm Your Heart -- CD

Aaron Neville

1991 A&M Records

Aaron Neville at his Best, August 15, 2001
By Robert Kall "Rob Kall of Opednews.com" (Newtown, PA) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Warm Your Heart (Audio CD)

Aaron Neville has been around a long time. This CD is an extraordinary creation, which combines some original songs and some classics. Produced by Linda Ronstadt and George Massengill, it offer lush, rich sounds which really do Warm Your Heart.

Neville's voice is at it's best. Several songs include duet vocals with Linda Ronstadt or Rita Coolidge. Ry Cooder plays guitar on several tracks.

This was the first Aaron Neville album I purchased, after first becoming a fan of his from hearing him sing on one of Linda Ronstadt's albums that he did duets on. Since then, I've purchased many more and my family knows they can't go wrong buying me an Aaron Neville CD for a gift.

As I listen to this album, writing this review, I get chills. It is by far my favorite of all his albums. I even bought a back-up copy. Maybe it's the orchestration and production of Linda Ronstadt. Maybe he just found his peak performance mode when recording these songs.

Whatever it is, this CD is one I have listened to at least 50 times, and I expect it will continue to have its staying power for me.

"Louisiana 1927" (Randy Newman) – 3:04
"Everybody Plays The Fool" (J.R. Bailey, Rudy Clark, Ken Williams) - 4:25
"It Feels Like Rain" (John Hiatt)- 4:56
"Somewhere, Somebody" (Max Gronenthal, Andrew Kastner, Larry John McNally) - 3:01
"Don't Go, Please Stay" (Burt Bacharach, Bob Hilliard) - 2:40
"With You In Mind" (Allen Toussaint) - 3:32
"That's The Way She Loves" (Allen Toussaint) - 4:45
"Angola Bound" (Aaron Neville, Neville Brothers) - 4:32

"Warm Your Heart" (Tom Dowd, Ahmet Ertegun, Jerry Wexler) - 3:49
"I Bid You Goodnight" (traditional) - 4:00
"Ave Maria" (Franz Schubert)- 4:41

The album utilizes many guest vocalists, musicians and session musicians. Producer Linda Ronstadt sings on four songs on the album and Grammy Award winning Rita Coolidge sings on three. Other guests include slide guitarist Ry Cooder, saxophonist Plas Johnson, Bob Seger, Dr. John, Bob Glaub and Dean Parks.

Blue Lester -- Remastered 24 Bit CD

The One and Only Lester Young

2005 Savoy/LLC Records

BLUE LESTER, a 15-track sampler of Lester Young's early recordings for Savoy, is an ideal introduction to the saxophone legend. Understated, lyrical, and possessed of a sly, nimble musical imagination, Young had a sinuous, laid-back sound with which he pioneered the idea of playing "cool" in jazz, launching--in effect--a stylistic revolution. Those qualities are abundant on BLUE LESTER, which features a host of Young originals (including the slinky title track, and the finger-popping "Jump, Lester, Jump"), and a smoothly swinging take on the chestnut "Indiana."Young is presented here in a quintet (which includes pianist Count Basie and guitarist Freddie Green), a sextet (featuring pianist Junior Mance and drummer Roy Haynes), and two orchestras (which offer a nice, punchy counterpoint to Young's low-slung style). The high resolution digital transfers should please Young collectors and jazz purists.

Caminho De Casa -- CD

Herbie Mann

1990 Chesky Records

Flutist Herbie Mann and his group of the time (Jasil Brazz) perform contemporary Brazilian music on this CD, including three numbers by Ivan Lins. Some of the treatments are strictly easy listening or close to bossa nova, while others would fit into the "contemporary jazz" category. On a whole, this is a pleasing set, both as background music and for close listenings -- one of Mann's better ones from the past 20 years. ~ Scott Yanow

Smokin' At The Half Note -- CD

Wynton Kelly Trio & Wes Montgomery

1965/1989 Verve Records

Product Description

Smokin' at the Half Note by Wes Montgomery and Wynton Kelly, originally released by Verve in 1965, shouldn't need a build-up for anyone whose ears have been open for the last 40 years. When you begin a live session with 13 minutes of "No Blues," a cornerstone of the Miles Davis Quintet with Hank Mobley, circa 1961, you'd better have your stuff together. Montgomery, one of a handful of truly great 20th century jazz guitarists, and Kelly, the ultimate piano accompanist, are backed by Miles' fabulous Kind of Blue rhythm section consisting of bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Jimmy Cobb. This 1965 live set, is indeed smoking! From a churning "If You Could See Me Now," written by bebop piano great Tadd Dameron, to Wes' own tour de force, "Four On Six," Montgomery and Kelly are two Jazz giants cutting loose with the best they've got.

Liquid Soul -- CD

Liquid Soul

1996 Ark 21 Records

On its largely instrumental and mostly live debut album, Liquid Soul serves up precise horn charts and tight dance grooves at the junction where early-'70s old-school funk à la the J.B.'s meets new-school mix culture. And jazz, too, as strong ... Full Descriptionversions of John Coltrane's "Equinox," Wayne Shorter's "Footprints," and Miles Davis' "Freddie the Freeloader" enter the mix alongside jamming live funk with a rapper on "Afro Loop" (or as the band splits the difference between the two forms on "Java Junkie"). Leader Mars Williams' tough, intense tenor sax tone cuts through particularly strongly on "New E," and he's ably complemented by Ron Haynes' trumpet. Guitarist Tommy Klein is a great rhythm comper -- check the slinky riffs he throws down on "New E" -- and the rhythm section is up to the considerable challenge of chopping up funk rhythms or fluidly swinging jazz with equal aplomb. "Blue Groove Freestyle" is a sterling example of what freestyle rapping with a live band could be. It many ways, Liquid Soul's real peers are artists like Manu Chao and Amparanoia in Spain, Zebda in France, or Ozomatli in Los Angeles -- bands that choose the elements they want to emphasize from a floating pool of dancefloor moves. Liquid Soul comes from Chicago, so the equation adds up to funk, jazz, and hip-hop delivered with smart, varied arrangements and skilled playing. ~ Don Snowden

Jazzmatazz -- CD

Guru featuring Roy Ayers, Donald Byrd, Ronny Jordan, Lonnie Liston Smith & More

1993 Chrysalis Records

Amazon.com essentials

After rhyming over Premier's doctored jazz beats in Gang Starr, Guru decided to take it to the next level, employing the talents of actual jazz musicians to create the grooves over which he would flow. Coming off like a jazzier extension of the Brand New Heavies' Heavy Rhyme Experience: Vol. 1, Jazzmatazz, Vol. 1 brought together a diverse group of jazz cats both old-school and new, including Roy Ayers, Donald Byrd, Lonnie Liston Smith, Ronny Jordan, and Courtney Pine. Guru even enlisted the serene pipes of Carleen Anderson and N'Dea Davenport and acted as something of an international hip-hop ambassador when he flipped "Le Bien, Le Mal" with French mic pro MC Solaar. From the Blue Note-style cover art to the hepcat spoken-word intro, this package is pure hip-hop jazz music. Jazz purists may wish to note that the grooves lean heavily toward the funkier 1970s era of jazz, and hardcore hip-hop heads my be turned off by the mellower musical stance. But then again, this is neither pure jazz nor hardcore hip-hop but rather an extension of the two. --Spence Abbott

If while listening to such outstanding cuts like, "The lord's Prayer, Didn't It Rain, When The Saints Go Marching In, On My Way, An Evening's Prayer, and A walk In Heaven, you are not moved, then may I suggest that you make an appointment with your doctor, to check for a pulse.

America The Beautiful -- CD

Shorty Rogers - Bud Shank & The Lighthouse All Stars

1991 Candid Records (London)

The 1991 version of the Lighthouse All-Stars gave trumpeter Shorty Rogers and altoist Bud Shank top billing. For this Candid CD, Rogers supplied eight of the selections (including "Less Is More," "Lotus Bud," "Fun" and "Here's That Old Martian Again") and the band also stretched out on Bud Powell's "Un Poco Loco" and a Rogers' arrangement of "America The Beautiful." This was one of the final records for both Shorty and the great tenor Bob Cooper and overall it is a typically swinging, witty and beautiful effort. Also in fine form are trumpeter Conte Candoli, Bill Perkins (on baritone, tenor and soprano), pianist Pete Jolly, bassist Monty Budwig and drummer Larence Marable. ~ Scott Yanow

Play -- CD

Bobby McFerrin & Chick Corea

1990 Blue Note Records

THE Standard by which others will be judged!, October 13, 2000
By Dale M. DeSteffen (Manitowoc, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Play (Audio CD)

This is a MUST for jazz enthusiasts. Like anything exceptional, most people won't like it, so don't bother playing this CD for friends unless they share your tastes in music. Excellence in any endeavor has a narrow audience, but for those who appreciate greatness, its appeal cuts deep. This recording cuts to the bone!! McFerrin is precise, inventive, and able to vocalize like an instrumentalist with an immense tonal range and expressiveness. He has no peers. And Chic Corea plays jazz piano with instrument mastery usually reserved for world-class classical pianists, but it's REALLY jazz, not Yoyo Ma (a master of the cello, world class) trying to play jazz, displaying amazing musicianship, but showing he just doesn't understand what jazz really is. By contrast, both Corea & McFerrin are masters of technique but are jazz masters as well.

Most of the cuts are note for note arrangements of earlier jazz classics: Spain (Miles Davis);Blues Connotation( Ornette Coleman). " Even From Me" is a collaborative composition by Corea And McFerrin based on a 4 note vocal bass riff repeated over & over, creating a foundation upon which each weave their unique jazz creations. The entire selection of pieces sound improvisational, but are tightly arranged.

Perhaps the best reason this is a "must have" recording is that the music is FUN. It makes you feel wonderful. It's not depressing bluesy (that can be good stuff too). It's not the frenetic dissonant cacophony of Thelonius Monk. It's just the best piano/vocal stuff I've heard. And it's fun-- they just play.

Just buy it. Don't worry, you'll be happy.

"Spain" – 10:12
"Even From Me" – 6:34
"Autumn Leaves" – 11:41
"Blues Connotation" – 7:13
"'Round Midnight" – 7:59
"Blue Bossa" – 6:14

12 Greatest Hits -- CD

Patsy Cline

1967/1988 Decca/MCA Records

Amazon.com essential recording

In the late 1950s and the '60s, country music was essentially a singles medium. This album, first released in 1967 and reissued on compact disc in 1988, collects Patsy Cline's biggest hits--all of them from the country singles market--including "Walkin' After Midnight," "Sweet Dreams (Of You)," "Crazy," and "I Fall to Pieces." Producer Owen Bradley surrounds Cline's full-throated, emotionally charged vocals with lush, sophisticated arrangements that set the standard for Nashville's "countrypolitan" sound. Before Shania Twain found a new (though not necessarily improved) way to combine country and pop in the 1990s, this was the top-selling country album of all time by a female artist. --Rick Mitchell

Skynyrd Frynds -- CD

Various Frynds

1994 MCA Records

Lynyrd Skynyrd is the seminal southern rock band. They have inspired and influenced countless aspiring boisterous rockers, many of whom became country music superstars. Billy Ray Cyrus was so enamored by Skynyrd that he named one of his first bands after their song "The Breeze."SKYNYRD FRYNDS is a collection of country stars paying tribute to the band that influenced them so greatly. Included in this tribute are such disparate acts as Alabama, performing (what else) "Sweet Home Alabama;" country outsider Steve Earle serving up a true rendition of "What's Your Name;" Travis Tritt's gritty rock-out "Don't Ask Me No Questions;" and a rockabilly rave-up with the Mavericks on "Call Me Breeze." This assembly succeeds in paying homage to Skynyrd's singular cocky sound while retaining their own distinctive voices. There are many surprises: Terry McBride offers a blistering "Saturday Night Special;" Hank Williams, Jr. sings a searing, heartfelt "Tuesday's Gone;" and the lone woman, Wynonna, blasts through with her version of the Skynyrd anthem "Free Bird." Past comparisons to Bonnie Raitt are blown away with her vocal.SKYNYRD FRYNDS is a diverse set; classic songs performed by the wide-range of musical artists who now make up the broad world of country music. All influenced by one band--Lynyrd Skynyrd. This Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute album is a high-profile effort, executive produced by the band's Gary Rossington and featuring a flock of major rock-influenced country artists. For the most part, those performers display a knowledge of Lynyrd Skynyrd's work and an affection for it. Unfortunately, the least impressive cover leads off the album. The country band Alabama might seem like the ideal interpreter of "Sweet Home Alabama," but the group clearly is not comfortable with the song. This is apparent in the gimmicky arrangement even before they rewrite the second verse, but their trouble with the words is a big problem. Apparently, lead singer Randy Owen doesn't want to praise racist Alabama Governor George Wallace or sing, "Watergate does not bother me, does your conscience bother you?" because there is now an innocuous verse concerning Alabama football replacing the original words. Things improve, however, with Travis Tritt's take on "Don't Ask Me No Questions" and Sammy Kershaw turns in a Western swing arrangement on "I Know a Little." The album's high point is Steve Earle's version of "What's Your Name?," a song he for one feels no need to clean up. Just as it began on a false note, the album closes on a weak spot, Wynonna's cover of "Free Bird." She can't quite figure out whether to abandon the song's arena rock legacy and turn it into a ballad of romantic farewell, and ends up undercutting its power without adding any real intimacy. Still, there are enough good performances here to demonstrate Lynyrd Skynyrd's influence on contemporary country. ~ William Ruhlmann

Live In 44' - Woodchopper's Ball, Vol. 1 -- CD

Woody Herman and The First Herd

1990 Jass Records

1944 was a pivotal year in Herman's career, the year his orchestra gradually evolved into The First Herd, his most exciting band. This CD features music from two radio shows in August (actually rehearsals for the broadcasts) plus performances from two prestigious engagements at the Hotel Pennsylvania in August and the Hollywood Palladium that October. With Flip Phillips's jump tenor and Bill Harris's expressive trombone already emerging as the band's top soloists and Francis Wayne contributing a few fine vocals, Ralph Burns and Neal Hefti were hurriedly putting together colorful arrangements to challenge the young sidemen. The music on this set, which precedes The Herd's first commercial recordings, could be titled The Birth of the Herd. Recommended, particularly to serious Woody Herman fans. ~ Scott Yanow

Emotion & Commotion -- CD

Jeff Beck

2010 ATCO Records

Wow! April 13, 2010
By Satchmo
Format:Audio CD

"Emotion and Commotion" is Jeff Beck's much-anticipated new release. Clocking in at just about 40 minutes, there is no wasted space on the disc. I will not go through track by track, as the other reviewers have done a nice job summarizing each song. Basically on this album, Beck leaves behind the high-powered techno and electronica flavors of his previous albums "Jeff," "You Had It Coming" and "Who Else" and goes for a more laid-back, worldly groove of classic rock fusion with classical undertones. Besides his amazing tone, these songs are wonderful. The covers are arranged well and tastefully done. Anyone who can transition from the beautiful "Somewhere over the Rainbow" to Screamin' Jay Hawkins' "I Put A Spell On You" and back to Jeff Buckley's "Lilac Wine" and make it cohesive within the album is doing something right. The Beck originals, "Hammerhead" and "Serene" are also well-written.

I recently started listening to Jeff Beck a couple years ago. I admit that I am a newcomer to his music. As a guitar player, I cannot even begin to comprehend Beck's tone and virtuoso skills. I am blown away by what he is able to achieve on his instrument. This album is highly recommended to 1)Any Jeff Beck fan (obviously), 2)Anyone who plays the guitar and wants to understand what is capable on the instrument, 3)Anyone who wants to explore creative and exciting new music, produced by one of the most criminally under-rated musicians of our time. Hope this helps!

1. "Corpus Christi Carol" Benjamin Britten 2:40
2. "Hammerhead" Jeff Beck, Jason Rebello 4:15

Well now, wait a minute; who DID play sax? Its not a typo if there was no sax player. :naughty:

Incidently, the Bill Charlap trio is playing in SLC tomorrow night, I'm still debating whether or not to drive down to see him. He backed up my favorite alto player, Phil Woods, for years.

Opps! Sorry Botch, I missed this one. Yes, we have no Sax! So, no one played Sax, even Herbbie! LOL

Go Go Go and see Bill Charlap Trio if you get a chance. I bet they put on a great show! :banana-rock:
