Red Garland's Piano -- Remastered 24bit CD

Red Garland - Paul Chambers - Art Taylor

1957/2006 Prestige/Concord Records

Red Garland's third session as a leader finds the distinctive pianist investigating eight standards (including "Please Send Me Someone to Love," "Stompin' at the Savoy," "If I Were a Bell," and "Almost Like Being in Love") with his distinctive chord voicings, melodic but creative ideas, and solid sense of swing. Joined by bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Art Taylor, Garland plays up to his usual consistent level, making this an easily recommended disc for straight-ahead fans. ~ Scott Yanow

3. The Very Thought of You
4. Almost Like Being in Love
5. If I Were a Bell

Hot & Cool -- CD

Tony Bennett sings Ellington

1999 RPM/Columbia Records

Despite his well-publicized and well-deserved comeback, Tony Bennett's late-'90s releases didn't quite lived up to the buildup. This masterful tribute to Duke Ellington effectively righted the balance. With the excellent Ralph Sharon arranging for big band as well as providing his usual stellar piano accompaniment, Bennett turns in an all-around vocal performance that, for the (slight) vocal deterioration to be expected from a singer in his 70s, can be only be called magnificent. Duke's generous musicality, which shines in every note he ever wrote, is perfectly matched here by Bennett's equally generous yet always sophisticated song sense.Though Sharon leads the big band, the Italian arranger Jorge Calandrelli provided the straight orchestral arrangements. Except for Johnny Mandel, no one today can coax such delicate beauty from woodwinds and strings. There is probably no more emotionally expansive version of "Do Nothin' Till You Hear From Me" anywhere. And that's just the first track. For contrast, Bennett interprets the lovely "Azure" and "Sophisticated Lady" in a near whisper. Probably no one has made this musically exciting an album this late in his career except, of course, Duke Ellington himself.

Track Listing
1. Do Nothin' Till You Hear from Me
2. Mood Indigo
3. She's Got It Bad (And That Ain't Good)
4. Caravan
5. Chelsea Bridge
6. Azure
7. I'm Just a Lucky So and So
8. In a Sentimental Mood
9. Don't Get Around Much Anymore
10. Sophisticated Lady
11. In a Mellow Tone
12. Day Dream
13. Prelude to a Kiss
14. It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)

Personnel includes: Tony Bennett (vocals); Jorge Calandreli, Ralph Burns (conductor); Wynton Marsalis (trumpet); Al Grey (trombone); Joel Smirnoff (violin). The Ralph Sharon Quartet: Ralph Sharon (piano); Gray Sargent (guitar); Paul Langosch (bass); Clayton Cameron (drums).Recorded at the Hit Factory, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by Nat Hentoff.BENNETT SINGS ELLINGTON HOT & COOL won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Tradtional Pop Vocal Performance. "Chelsea Bridge" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement. "Day Dream" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s).Tributee: Duke Ellington.

Fontessa -- Remastered CD

The Modern Jazz Quartet

1956/???? Warner Music Europe (Import Germany)

FINE SWINGIN LYRICAL ALBUM!!!!!!!!!!!!! February 27, 2004
By Christopher Covais
Format:Audio CD

There is no reason why this album by the Modern Jazz Quartet should not get five stars. This particular album swings a litte bit more agressively than some albums before it, but still has the lyrical/classical influences of their past albums. It starts off with the swingin Versailles than goes in to the slow rather boring Angel Eyes, than comes the masterpiece. A four movement composition, Fontessa. It's great. Other ground breaking songs like Bluesology, Jackson's more early popular blues piece, and Dizzy Gillespie's Woody n' You. Over all this album is bright, fresh, melodic, soul clensing, soothing, brialliant, beatiful, clean jazz records of MJQ history. And record history of all time.

Track Listing
1. Versailles (Porte de Versailles)
2. Angel Eyes
3. Fontessa
4. Over the Rainbow
5. Bluesology
6. Willow Weep for Me
7. Woodyn You

Modern Jazz Quartet: John Lewis (piano); Milt Jackson (vibraphone); Percy Heath (acoustic bass); Connie Kay (drums).

Pop Pop -- CD

Rickie Lee Jones

1991 Geffen Records

Rickie Lee Jones's almost perfect Record, September 18, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Pop Pop (Audio CD)

If I had to choose a favorite Rickie Lee Jones record, it would be a difficult choice but Pop Pop might just be my final decision. From the first chords on an acoustic nylon string guitar on the first track you know you're in for a treat. More than any other of her albums, Pop Pop captures the magic that Rickie Lee Jones delivers on stage if you catch her in a small venue. Jazz legends Charlie Haden on bass, Joe Henderson on Sax and Robben Ford on acoustic guitar offer up jaw dropping performances throughout Pop Pop. When it comes to subtle jazz instrumentation and pitch perfect vocals, it doesn't get much better than this. Add to that, the gorgeous quality of the recording and you have the basic ingredients for a near perfect pop/jazz album that seems to have rarely left my cd player for almost a decade. Stand out tracks include: My One and Only Love, Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most, Jimi Hendrix's Up From The Skies, Second Time Around, and Bye Bye Blackbird.

Track listing

1. My One and Only Love
2. Spring Can Really Hang You up the Most
3. Hi-Lili Hi-Lo
4. Up From the Skies
5. Second Time Around
6. Dat Dere
7. I'll Be Seeing You
8. Bye Bye Blackbird
9. Ballad of the Sad Young Men, The
10. I Won't Grow Up
11. Love Junkyard
12. Comin' Back to Me

Bonus Info From Rickie Lee Jones:

"The album's got a kind of old flavor about it. There's no electric music, no keyboard and no drums. A couple of songs have snare and a bongo, but no
drum kit. Real intimate. It's real nice listening. [The album's] just what I wanted to do, what I like to listen to. All standards."

"I can't remember when I decided on just guitar and bass. I was thinking about it for a couple of years, because I had practiced 'Valentine' with a guitar and bass when I lived in France and said 'Oh, that's eally beautiful and different without a keyboard.' I think I got the idea then and it was growing on me. [That sparer sound] is what I grew up with. My uncle and my dad used to play together all the time: they would sing those standards with the guitar so for me it's the most natural sounding."

"It's not jazz in the way that people who like jazz like jazz. It's my own way of looking at it. The album is old, it's very special."
(Rickie Lee Jones)

Idle Moments -- RVG Edition Remastered CD

Grant Green

1964/1999 Blue Note Records

This is part of the Blue Note Rudy Van Gelder Editions series. It was always a part of Blue Note's development and marketing to introduce new artists as sidemen on more well-known leaders' projects before giving them dates of their own. The system worked pretty well, and the irony is that a release like 1963's IDLE MOMENTS looks likes more of an all-star session in retrospect. Sure, we get to hear Grant Green stretching out. But we also get Bobby Hutcherson and Joe Henderson, who were just winning their first Downbeat polls at the time.Green himself had come through this system, appearing with organ combos and on other hard bop sessions, before graduating to his own Blue Note dates. IDLE MOMENTS may be one of his finest dates in the studio, simply on the strength of the elegant melancholy of the title cut and the deep groove the band settles into on "Django." Green's playing has much in common with that of such labelmates as saxophonist Stanley Turrentine and pianist Gene Harris. He manages to bring solid bebop sensibilities to a spare, down-home approach and delivers it all with an oaken tone at once dry, dark, and full of character.

"Idle Moments" (Pearson) – 14:56
"Jean De Fleur" (Green) – 6:49
"Django" (John Lewis) – 8:44
"Nomad" (Pearson) – 12:16

Bonus tracks on CD reissue:

"Jean De Fleur" [Alternate Take] - 8:09
"Django" [Alternate Take] - 13:12

Elegant Soul -- Remastered CD

Gene Harris and His Three Sounds

1968/2008 Blue Note Rare Groove Series

ELEGANT SOUL (1968) was the penultimate release by the Three Sounds, and sees them leaving behind the cool instrumental jazz that had typified most of their previous output, and moving more decisively in the direction of easy-listening pop. While the group had always had something of a light, accessible take on post-bop, ELEGANT SOUL, with its string arrangements and pop-oriented ambitions, finds them crossing over into easy listening. The 2008 reissue, part of a Blue Note reissue project targeting rare groove collectors and fans of soul-jazz, contextualizes the album for what it is: a unique jazz-soul-pop hybrid.

"Elegant Soul" (Virginia P. Bland) - 3:15
"Do It Right Now" (Bland) - 6:20
"Sittin' Duck" (Monk Higgins) - 9:18
"(Sock It to Me) Harper Valley P.T.A." (Tom T. Hall) - 2:48
"Sugar Hill" (Dee Ervin, Miles Grayson) - 2:48
"African Sweets" (Ervin) - 4:30
"Black Gold" (Grayson) - 3:29
"Book of Slim" (Higgins) - 3:26
"Walls of Respect" (Gene Harris, Higgins) - 3:13

Recorded at RPM Studios, Los Angeles, California on September 19 (tracks 3, 4 & 8) and September 20 (tracks 1, 2, 5-7 & 9), 1968

The Three Sounds: Gene Harris (piano); Andy Simpkins (bass instrument); Carl Burnett (drum).Additional personnel: Al Vescovo (guitar); Henry Felber (violin, strings); Dave Burk, Leonard Malarsky, Ralph Schaeffer (violin); Philip Goldberg (viola); Jerry Kessler (cello); William Kurash, Albert Steinberg (strings); Jim Horn (flute); Bob Jung (reeds); Miles Grayson, Paul Humphrey (drum); Alan Estes, Dee Ervin (percussion); Louis Kievman.Arranger: Monk Higgins.

Jenkins - Jordan - Timmons -- Remastered CD

John Jenkins, Clifford Jordan, Bobby Timmons

1957/1994 Prestige/New Jazz - OJC

Four of the five selections on this CD reissue (which also includes "Tenderly") are obscure jazz originals by altoist John Jenkins, tenor saxophonist Clifford Jordan, or trombonist Julian Priester. Inspired by both Charlie Parker and Jackie McLean, Jenkins teams up with Jordan, pianist Bobby Timmons, bassist Wilbur Ware, and drummer Dannie Richmond for some bop-oriented improvising. Strange that this would be one of only two sets led by Jenkins. Although the Blue Note CD, recorded just 16 days later, gets the edge, this is an excellent effort too. ~ Scott Yanow

Track Listing
1. Cliff's Edge
2. Tenderly
3. Princess
4. Soft Talk
5. Blue Jay

Personnel: John Jenkins (alto saxophone); Clifford Jordan (tenor saxophone); Bobby Timmons (piano); Wilbur Ware (bass); Dannie Richmond (drums).Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, New Jersey on July 26, 1957. Originally released on Presitige/New Jazz (8232). Includes liner notes by Ira Gitler.Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1994, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California)
