Love's Been Rough On Me -- CD

Etta James

1997 RCA Records

THE ONE AND ONLY ETTA JAMES, August 28, 2005
By R. Rodriguez "Mayan Traveler" (Maui Hawaii) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Love's Been Rough on Me (Audio CD)

Etta James takes on a country feel on this release but being that it IS Etta James one would think that there were no other country singers ever. From the opening tract "The Rock" you feel the pain in this womans soul. when she sings " Now you say I`m only holding you down like some ole rock you been draggin around " You know that she has felt it and she makes you feel it too.The following song " Cry like A Rainy Day " Has Etta`s voice soaring to its highest high and down to its lowest lows never clearer, stronger, and just as powerful as ever this lady can SANG. The Title Track will bring you to tears she sings " Have Mercy Baby Loves Been Rough On Me " her voice and style take you down a path of broken dreams and hearts as only Etta can do.Her rendition of "If I Had Any Pride At all" and I`ve Been Lovin You" Will have you running for a tissue. And then as if to rescue your broken heart Etta sings " I Can Give You Everything " to bring you back from that edge. To round the offering out the closing tract was written by Etta herself with her son Donto and Josh Sklair." Done In The Dark" is catchy, sassy,in your face, I know your doing me wrong kinda song,a fitting end to these sessions.
As with all of her recordings the backing musicians are a tight and well oiled unit one wonders if playing with the best brings out the best I`m not sure but it sure sounds that way. This CD belongs in everyone ones collection
I was lucky enough to of seen this Lady twice this summer she can still belt em out and stir your soul, she is after all THE ONE AND ONLY ETTA JAMES

Who else got theirs today? That is assuming you know I'm talking about Steve Wilson's mix of this album.

I'm about to fire it up right now.

I don't know if there are other multichannel mixes of this album but this one is my first so I've nothing to compare it to. That said, I'll answer your question with "both".

I thought there were elements of fantastic Steve Wilson wizardry but overall I thought it sounded rather dull, flat and lifeless (not exactly shocking for something recorded 40+ years ago). To further confound things, Roundabout has always been my favorite track from Fragile but on this new mix, it may just be my least favorite.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I only gave it one listen with about 95% of my attention. Perhaps I should hold any judgments in reserve until I give it another listen or two with 100% of my attention.

^ From what I have read else where in the world of the web, is that the BR has slight advantages over the DVD......

I have Close To The Edge and The Yes Album on BR, and think The Yes Album was done a bit better, however I am not sure if I want to spend the $$ on Fragile unless someone really raves about it!

First of all, it seems I have the 2-disc CD/DVD-A combo, not the CD/BD combo. When I preordered mine over a month ago, the description was pretty sparse. There were two listed, one for $27 and one for $32 but the very limited descriptions were identical so I naturally selected the $27 one. While I'd prefer the BD, I highly doubt I'd be able to hear any difference between lossless DVD-A and lossless BD.

Secondly, Mike, even though both our discs are DVD-A, my only guess to a difference would be the mix itself if Steve Wilson wasn't involved in mixing the one you have.

Just curious Zing, what are you using as a DVD-A player? An Oppo of some kind?

Zing,
That's a very interesting academic exercise. I know the DVDA uses MLP for their lossless packing. Wasn't sure about Bluray. Obviously the mixes will be different. I googled the lossless packing as I was curious. I grabbed this from Wikipedia:

Meridian Lossless Packing, also known as Packed PCM (PPCM),[citation needed] is a proprietary lossless compression technique for compressing PCM audio data developed by Meridian Audio, Ltd. MLP is the standard lossless compression method for DVD-Audio content (often advertised with the Advanced Resolution logo) and typically provides about 1.5:1 compression on most music material. All DVD-Audio players are equipped with MLP decoding, while its use on the discs themselves is at their producers' discretion.

Dolby TrueHD, used in Blu-ray and HD DVD, employs MLP, but compared with DVD-Audio, adds higher bit rates, 8 full-range channels, extensive metadata, and custom speaker placements (as specified by SMPTE).

So if I read this correctly...and I may not...it seems as though Bluray IS the way to go...If you want the best of the best??

Brain-fart on my end. It was Close to the Edge, not Fragile, that I got, and on DVD-A, not Bluray. It's okay, I've only listened to it once so far. I will spend the extra to get Fragile on Bluray.

And now Amazon is only showing a single CD, new stereo mix/import, for $31.99, and used DVD-A's.

The Wall -- 2 CD Set

Pink Floyd

1979 Pink Floyd Music/Columbia

Amazon.com essential recording

The Wall is less a collection of songs than a single work, which is sometimes frustrating; the plot lacks enough coherence to hold the snippets of music together. However, there are occasional flashes of brilliance on what arguably ranks as Pink Floyd's most ambitious project. Most of these come from the fully developed songs, which have become classics in their own right; "Hey You," "Mother," and especially "Comfortably Numb" are subtly incredible pieces of music. Though complex, they move at a relaxed pace, allowing the listener to absorb them slowly; this kind of pacing was something Pink Floyd excelled at. Also worth noting is the "Another Brick in the Wall/The Happiest Days of Our Lives" medley, which has become a staple of rock radio. --Genevieve Williams
