Bring it on home... the soul classics -- CD

Aaron Neville

2006 Burgundy Records

Amazon.com

Approach Aaron Neville's Bring it on Home ... the Soul Classics with anything but an open heart and you've missed the point. This is a serious CD, at once mournful, humble, and joyous, with no shortage of moments that recall the terribleness of Hurricane Katrina. One way of processing it is as a cataloging of classic songs that helped Neville's fellow New Orleanians soldier through: opener "Rainy Night in Georgia" with jazzman Chris Botti wrings beauty from soaking-wet despair, "Stand By Me" turns its heel on pleading in favor of promise-making, and "People Get Ready," with David Sanborn and brother Art, is a chill-sending reminder of how unity and perseverance can trump tragedy. Viewed from another lens, Soul Classics is Neville's attempt at climbing aboard the late-career, classic-covers bandwagon while weaving his bayou-soul heritage into the picture. The trouble with that theory, though, is that it feels like so much more. His voice flutters alongside Mavis Staple's on "Respect Yourself" with completely uncontrived tenderness, and Otis Redding's "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" becomes a meditation on stillness and ease that befits a boulder-sized lump in the throat. A tossed-together concept album this is not; a reflection of a soul man gifted with the ability to spin epic, unyielding sorrow into grace is more like it. --Tammy La Gorce

After all, I grew up with Lori ( ) and those other Partridges!

....and they were a heck of a lot better "Band" than that "Brady Bunch"! ;)

Don't knock "The Silver Platters"!!!! (Or is it The Brady Six?) Wait for little Bobby Brady to take his solo at the 50 second mark. Clearly he is the star of this video:

5.0 out of 5 stars This Album is Beyond Belief, January 25, 2005
By Steve K "The DON" (Delta, CO,USA) - See all my reviews

This review is from: See the Light (Audio CD)

I am 60 and have been listening to music since doowop in the 50s. Running across Jeff Healey in "Roadhouse" was a revelation. I just loved that music & recently ordered 3 JH CDS, all very good, but this is BEYOND belief. Every track is stellar. If I look with all my might for flaws, I cant find any. What a talent! Some people are handicapped, by their infirmity, not JEFF, he's unbeleivably great & this album proves it. I have nothing more to add that hasnt been said already by the other reviewers. Get this album, then you can die. Page, Clapton, Hendrix all must step aside for Jeff Healey. All Hail!

1. "Confidence Man" (John Hiatt) — 3:12
2. "My Little Girl" (Jeff Healey) — 3:10
3. "River of No Return" (Keith Reid, Jon Tiven, Sally Tiven) — 3:31
4. "Don't Let Your Chance Go By" (Healey) — 3:20
5. "Angel Eyes" (Hiatt, Fred Koller) — 4:40

The Pressure Is On -- CD

Hank Williams, Jr.

1981/1995 Curb Records

Hank's Best, July 19, 2003
By Mark Flickinger (Hanover, PA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)

This review is from: The Pressure Is On: Original Classic Hits, Vol. 7 (Audio CD)

This is definitely my all-time favorite Hank album. When I was a kid my dad had this on vinyl and I remember listening to it the night before going fishing in Gettysburg, PA. The memories this album conjures up for me are amazing. My favorite song is probably 'Tennessee Stud' with its "Johnny Cash-like" vocal delivery. Of course the classic 'Country Boy Can Survive' is on this one which is very fun to perform at karaoke by the way. Other highlights include 'Ramblin' In My Shoes' featuring the late great Boxcar Willie, 'Mr Weatherman' which reminds one a bit of Eric Clapton's 'Wonderful Tonight', and the title track 'The Pressure Is On' where Hank's Greg Allman influence just shines. In my opinion this CD is a must-have for all country fans. It sounds just as good today as when it was first released and will sound good until we're all gone. It is timeless!!

1. "A Country Boy Can Survive" (Hank Williams, Jr.) – 4:16
2. "The Coalition to Ban Coalitions" (Williams) – 2:10
3. "Tennessee Stud" (Jimmy Driftwood) – 3:27
4. "Ramblin' in My Shoes" (Bill Emerson, Vince Emerson) – 3:13
5. "The Pressure Is On" (Williams) – 4:13
6. "All My Rowdy Friends (Have Settled Down)" (Williams) – 3:58
7. "I Don't Care (If Tomorrow Never Comes)" (Williams) – 2:41
8. "Weatherman" (Williams) – 3:39
9. "Everytime I Hear That Song" (Williams) – 3:15
10. "Ballad of Hank Williams" (Don Helms) – 3:21

Red Dirt Girl -- CD

Emmylou Harris

2000 Nonesuch Records

Amazon.com

Consider this Emmylou Harris's emancipation proclamation--an album that confirms that 1995's adventurously atmospheric Wrecking Ball wasn't an aberration, but a preview of more radical changes to come. Long the godmother of alternative-country's traditionalist wing, Harris here writes songs with Luscious Jackson's Jill Cunniff, sings a duet with Dave Matthews ("My Antonia"), and recruits Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa to provide harmonies on the album's most compelling ballad ("Tragedy"). The production by Malcolm Burn applies sonic treatments of drum machines, shimmering guitars, and echoed vocals to a song cycle by Harris that is largely original and deeply personal, filled with dream imagery and evocations of a spiritual quest. While material such as "Michaelangelo" and "Bang the Drum Slowly" suffers from an arty ponderousness, it's doubtful that Harris has ever recorded an album that means more to her than this one. --Don McLeese

All tracks written by Emmylou Harris, except where noted.

1. "The Pearl" – 5:02
2. "Michelangelo" – 5:14
3. "I Don't Wanna Talk About It Now" – 4:47
4. "Tragedy" [with Patti Scialfa - duet vocals & Bruce Springsteen - harmony vocals] (Harris, Rodney Crowell) – 4:24
5. "Red Dirt Girl" – 4:19
6. "My Baby Needs a Shepherd" – 4:39
7. "Bang the Drum Slowly" (Harris, Guy Clark) – 4:51
8. "J'ai Fait Tout" (Harris, Jill Cunniff, Daryl Johnson) – 5:31
9. "One Big Love" (Patty Griffin, Angelo) – 4:33
10. "Hour of Gold" – 5:00
11. "My Antonia" [with Dave Matthews] – 3:43
12. "Boy from Tupelo" – 3:48

Cry Like A Rainstorm, Howl Like The Wind -- CD

Linda Ronstadt featuring Aaron Neville

1989 Elektra Records

Amazon.com essential recording

An album that defines virtually everything that is right about adult contemporary pop--and yes, there are a few things--Cry Like a Rainstorm, Howl Like the Wind contains lush, orchestrated arrangements of songs by first-rate tunesmiths such as Jimmy Webb, Eric Kaz, Paul Carrack, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weill, Isaac Hayes, and Karla Bonoff. Four cuts, including the Grammy-winning "Don't Know Much," feature duets between Ronstadt (still singing with power and assurance even at the top of her range) and angel-voiced Aaron Neville. Other highlights include "Adios," with multitracked background vocals by Brian Wilson, and the title song, which is driven to new heights by the Skywalker Symphony Orchestra and the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir. Beautiful stuff. --Daniel Durchholz

Real LIVE Roadrunning -- CD/DVD

Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris

I was there..., October 29, 2006
By Cs Palmer "Wombat Joe" (Corona del Mar, CA USA) - See all my reviews

This review is from: REAL LIVE ROADRUNNING (DVD)

I was at the Gibson Ampitheater when this concert was filmed. It was, without a doubt, one of the best concerts I have ever been to, second only to Led Zepplin at the LA Forum in 1976. Knopfler played wonderfully, and his interplay with Harris was superb. Their voices combined surpisingly well, and the instrumental work was top notch. I hope the DVD will capture the energy in the crowd - people were usually on their feet and dancing with total strangers. Each song from the "Roadrunning" album was played, but the outstanding cuts will be Emmylou's "Red Dirt Girl", and Mark's "Song for Sonny Liston". My favorite, though, was the slow buldup to a crashing version of Knopfler's "Speedway to Nazareth", one of my favorite rock songs of all times. I have heard Mark play this live before, as well as a few reorded versions, and this was penultimate. I read on Knopfler's UK website that Warner Brothers will be releasing this November 14th, but it can't be too soon for me!
