    Radio Shack SPL Meter Placement

Technically, an omni directional instrumentation microphone should be pointed at the ceiling (90 degrees incidence) to avoid high frequency buildup when the audio wavelength is close to the diameter of the capsule, but in the case of the RS meter, it's quality isn't high enough to make a...

How to build amp measurement gear?

Transistor amps have trouble in some cases at the highest audio frequencies where they can't deliver full output. Testing at 1 watt presents a level playing field.

    Grilles on or off?

I actually have grilles on both my subwoofers and the woofer section of my Voice of the Theater speakers. I have found that for some reason when people see a speaker cone, they have to push on it to see if it moves. Stupid.

How to build amp measurement gear?

IMD, noise floor, phase linearity. That's about all that you can do with that program. Frequency response is better measured by TrueRTA.

Department of Dispelling Stupid Ass Amplifier Myths

Negative feed back lowers the loop gain of the amplifier, lowers output impedance, and reduces nonlinearities (distortion). The even order harmonic distortion components are cancelled by the summing action of the differential output signal into the load.

    Now it's AC outlets?

Shit, I piss directly into our electrical breaker panel. Makes everything sound better..... :teasing-tease:

Poor poor C240, forgotten for years.

Yep, the Costco aerosol glass cleaner stuff that comes in 4-can shrink wrapped packages. Use it for everything. BTW, the best contact cleaner I've ever encountered is Stabillant 22, which is available from Micro-Tools. http://www.micro-tools.com/store/SearchByKeyword.aspx?word=stabilant+22...

Poor poor C240, forgotten for years.

I use these solvents very selectively. For chassis with lettering, I use glass cleaner I get from Costco. This also works for units which have a buildup of residue from someone who smoked. It works well on the circuit boards like the MC240. The xylene has to be used carefully, and only where...

Poor poor C240, forgotten for years.

It needed some cleaning up when I bought it, but it was in otherwise excellent shape. BTW, I use a variety of cleaners, including glass cleaner, xylene, denatured alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, each for different parts. Polishes will take off the lettering on a chassis in no time, so I don't use it.

    Question for Yamaha AVR owners

In many instances, the tuners in receivers and preamps is simply a module manufactured by Asian companies: http://www.techdesign.be/projects/041/041.htm

Poor poor C240, forgotten for years.

I've got one just like it. Its from the early 1960s.

Poor poor C240, forgotten for years.

Looks about as bad as it could be. Re-chrome and re-paint the chassis, new tube sockets, pots, switches, probably new filter and other electrolytic caps, replace the bias selenium rectifier with a diode....a lot of work.....assuming the power and output transformers work.....

    Frequency Range Question

There is no universally agreed upon standard for the names of these regions - its all who you ask. Even then, I'm not sure how much it matters one way or the other where the precise boundaries are.

    Tutorial: Center Channel Lobing

I think Bi polar surrounds would certainly be useful for surrounds (although I stick with monopoles). The directionality from the surrounds on a dubbing stage is more general than specific due to the multiple surrounds per channel.

    Tutorial: Center Channel Lobing

Not so fast. I worked in the feature film industry in Hollywood for many years, spending much of my time on the dubbing stages where films are mixed. I never encountered an instance where identical speakers were used in the surrounds and the front. In every instance, the surrounds are very much...

Who Uses a Horizontal MTM Center Speaker

I jettisoned the center speaker a couple years ago and now just use phantom imaging. Movie sound is far less important to me than the best two channel music reproduction; having stuff between the two stereo speakers just mucks up the imaging, both sonically and visually.
