I'm making music, too.

Flint, I thought this hread was about making music not a chronic obsession with wanking. :text-tmi: :eek:bscene-buttred: :teasing-tease:

Wonderful news to have you back on the drums more. I like the sound.

I like the name also. Richard messed up and almost broke his thumb working on a car spring.
He is out for the season. I have been doing most of the muscle work getting the gear in and out.
Richard is the Drummer for a band and he has the Sound System. Presonus live 24.4.2 DBX drive rack Crown ITech 6000 for Sub ITech 6000 for mids, and Highs are XTI 1000. Paul has had the chance to hear them back a few years. Tommy and Bahamas.

I hope all goes well for the band and you will not run into any bad luck.

Here's a rough mix of a different tune.
Is that the same vocalist from 'I Won't Follow'?

I genuinely like 'Hole In My Soul' a lot.

And I'm really digging the difference in the tunes. I Won't Follow really made me think of The Cars. Hole In My Soul makes me think of Ozzy.

Keep up the good work, Flint.

Enjoyed both songs very nice.

Like Zing said the two song are very different from one another.

I am seeking opinions...

There are two producers/engineers in the band, and I am one of them. The other one is in disagreement with me on the ideal "sound" for the lead singing. I prefer a natural sound as you can hear in the Youtube clip above. However, the other guys likes to double the vocal as you can hear in the bandcamp website (the second song above).

I find the doubled vocals annoying and usually only useful for poor singers or really, really heavy music.

The other two members of the band are staying out of the debate.

I would like to hear your opinions. Do you prefer the doubled vocals as in "Hole in My Soul" above or the single track clearer vocal in my youtube video for "I won't follow"?

I will not be offended if you disagree with me. In fact, I won't even argue my point on this topic any longer (imagine that).

Hmmm... ok I listened to Hole in my Soul. Yeah Zing there's a definite Ozzy vibe there, I like it! Overall I think the doubled vocal actually sounds good in this song. Not saying it would suit everything - I'll listen to the other next - but for this one it works. Mostly: what I didn't like is when the two vocal lines are obviously doing something different, then it becomes painfully clear that it's two voice tracks rather than just an effect, and it's kinda jarring IMHO.

Friendly criticism: in this song, the way almost every vocal phrase has a downward slide at the end got kind of repetitive after a while and I kept wanting it to do something different. Yeah a few ended straight, but too much of a particular style without some variation makes it stand out a bit much IMHO.

On to the next one...

So are you Foosman Thumper or Foosman Beater?

Listened to Follow. I like this one a lot! Personally, I thought it was more interesting musically/compositionally, and all the parts had more interesting stuff going on. I love the bass line! Drummer's not bad either. :p Just writing my initial impressions, please don't take this too seriously, but maybe if Hole in my Soul were shorter it would be more effective? I felt more engaged through the whole song with Follow.

As for the vocal issue, yeah Follow has a different sound to it, and it works well in that song. But I still like the doubled effect in Hole, when they don't diverge.

I think each particular song and its intended sound should dictate what the vocals sound like. I don't see anything wrong with having varied vocal sounds. So what if the vocals are dry in one song and wet in another? If the effect (or lack there of) lends itself to the song, the story you're telling and the sound you all want for a particular tune, then that's the path I think you should go down.

Now, having said that, if you (as a band) want a particular signature sound consistent on all tracks, I think you need the input of all band members. Bring into the voting process these guys that are abstaining. They're part of the band too, right? I think they should have a say, even if you have to force them to say it.

As for my opinion of which vocal sound I prefer, I haven't formed one yet. And that's likely because I think the vocal sound in I Won't Follow is a perfect match for the sound of that song and the type of song that it is. I also think the doubled up vocals in Hole In My Soul are a perfect match for that song.

Wow, you gone all meta on me, Zing.

I've been in bands pretty much all my life, and I understand making each song right for that song. Simple question from me, having heard the second track without a doubled vocal and preferring it (myself), I don't want to argue for it if I get the impression people really like it with a doubled vocal. So, the survey says...???

I've listened to about 50 songs recorded by the other producer in the band and I cannot think of a single one where he didn't double the vocals. In my own productions, I have doubled the vocals about 20% of the time and tripled or fully harmonized the entire vocal track about 7% of the time. I think there is a time and place for everything.

What do you guys think about these two songs, specifically? I am still going to add some parts to the arrangement of the second song, but the other producer likes to move fast and live with "good enough".

I'm not entirely certain what you mean by this.

Can we hear (even a snippet of) the non-doubled version of Hole In My Soul? Comparing vocal effects from two very different songs in order to form a singular opinion is almost certain to get you a 50/50 split in our answers.

That's never a good thing. And in my opinion, a good indication of things to come. You may want to consider nipping that in the bud pronto.

Well I just listened to your Hole. (heh heh)
I was going to immediately comment that I LOVE the chorusing on the vocals! Then I read the subsequent posts and realized there is a "debate". I REALLY like the chorusing effect. However, I wouldn't want to hear it on every song. It would get cliche very quickly. As for wether this particular song would sound better with or without the effect - well I don't think any of us can give an opinion without hearing it without the doubled vocals.

Yeah... we talk about it and he understands the problem. Hole in my soul is not finished, but he posted it with downloading capabilities. I don't like the idea that this version could be floating around out there forever. He just wants to be in a band and his drummer is off running around the world while he is waiting to do stuff. That is my fault, not his. It isn't that important to me. I just have a hard time from the work I've done in the past where we could take as many as 100 takes to get the drums right on a song. I even remember tunes which took over a year to get from initial tracking to a finished version, and I loved the results from that effort. I also remember songs that got worse and worse the more we worked on them. So, what the hell do I know.

I do know this, I have no aspirations to make any sort fo career out of music ever again. So this is just fun for me and I need to remind myself of that all the time.

First off... I know nothing about making music. I'll just say what I like... please no offense as these are just my opinions on what I like.

I like both of the songs! You guys are talented! I've listened to each version a few times and I'm not sure of my favorite.

Won't Follow
I like the natural sound of the Youtube version for this one. I think it works best.
I really like the background vocals on this one but want them a little more harmonized.
I feel the drum line is "up-beat" but I never get that from the vocal. I want a single up beat vocal run in it.
It's a bit old school as it runs too long, like a minute too long.

Hole in My Soul
This one I definitely like the dubbed voice effect. It matches the song perfectly.
I think this is dragged out a bit in a number of spots and could be a lot shorter as well. At least if you want a popular song that is. It doesn't even start a vocal for 52 seconds and that's going to lose some peoples attention.
Again, I feel this needs a "kick ass" vocal outlet in it somewhere. The drum line and guitar rock but the vocal doesn't ever seam to catch up. A good example is around 2:50 in the song it feels like a build up but at 3:10 it ends up in a guitar solo.... feels like it's almost starting over and didn't complete the kick ass drum build up.
Flint, you kick ass on the drums, really mixing it up, I like the mixed up drum rolls, especially at 1:38, that kind of drums grabs my attention. But I do not like the one at 2:37, that's not show casing your talent. I'm sure it's hard to do but I like it mixed up. Just my opinion.

Overall I'm very impressed and you should be proud!
Great Job!!!!!

I just found myself singing "hole in my soul" out loud in my living room. I really like that lyric!
