Maybe a projector in my future

If I could justify getting rid of the old Mits downstairs, I would like nothing more than a front projector setup. It really makes the experince much more immersive and fulfilling. A real live Home Theater experience.

Not something to use for casual viewing, but for movies, fights, superbowls...

Max, you might want to spend a bit of time on Projector Central and Projector Reviews. Both sites do an incredibly thorough and fair job of reviewing PJs, leaving little doubt as to which models are right for you ( at least what models should be on your short list).

I went to projector central and they had a youtube video showing a 4 projector shootout. All they did was show the pictures! I mean they all looked the same because the youtube feed sucked so bad.

Poke around a bit and look for actual reviews of specific models.

Here's the Projector Reviews review of the LG you referenced.

Here's their review of the 3010.

Thank you Zing, but like I said, I just can't justify getting rid of the old Mits.

My take is for about $600 more you can have a projector that destroys that :D mine!!!

Ok, so we are still moving forward with our new house. I am commited to ripping down some demising walls in what used to be the bonus room. In doing so I would like to pre-wire for a projector, just in case there is budget left over to do so. Aside from a 25' HDMI cable I am assuming that I should run romex and expect to hang a power outlet if I get a projector. Anything else I should run up there while the ceiling is open?

You'll need a solid mounting point for the projector bracket. If you are going to have the ceiling open, it'd be a good time to mount a plywood support between the joists where the projector will hang.

I'd recommend installing a 2x6 or 2x8 between or on top of the ceiling joists. The least expensive way to hang a drop rod is to install a 1 1/2" flange and then the appropriate length 1 1/2" pipe easily obtained at lowe's or home depot. You may consider running a PVC conduit to run your HDMI and other cables inside of in case of a cable failure. I'd run your HDMI, a cat 5e/6 cable and an appropriate length 3.5mm cable for triggers in case you install an electric screen or something. These materials are inexpensive and will save you headaches later...

So, I need to pick a projector and screen size and location. Then calculate throw to put this in the right place. If I don't rip up that part of the ceiling I can always do it later. Although there maybe be an attic access. Whick I guess makes prewiring pointless. I guess we will need to look for that on wed when we do the inspection.

Maximo, if you install conduit of a large enough diameter, you can also pull a long replacement power cord and plug into an outlet or surge protector located near the equipment rack. That would make for a "cleaner" install. The "powerbridge" is also an option for power.

That is exactly what I did. I bought a long power cable from monoprice (though an extension cord would work just as well) and ran it from the power conditioner in the main rack to the PJ. I was a little worried about having power and HDMI so close together but no problems so far.

^ same here, although my metal conduit which is exposed and hanging from the ceiling was a design decision, it houses all the cables going to the projector and I haven't experienced any ill effects either...
