SPOILER THREAD-- Star Wars Episode IV --SPOILER THREAD

I thought of that as well Walls, but he seemed very proficient for someone who was trained but hadn't seen any combat. It's a minor point for me and maybe it will be made more clear in the next film.

The internet is going crazy with speculation on Rey. Latest theory I've read, is that she is somehow related to Obi-Wan due to her fighting style. The article even went a little farther to hypothesize that maybe Obi-Wan had a daughter that Luke hooked up with, but that seems very far stretched.

How about this one...

I read somewhere that Supreme Leader Snoke is a clone of Luke Skywalker and that Rey is Snoke's daughter.

How did they clone Luke? From his hand Vader cut off in Empire. Pretty close to where Luke's (now Rey's) light saber would have been.

I still think it's Luke's daughter.

Me too. Not sure why else Luke's light saber would have "called" out to her. I didn't notice at the time but I've since read that Luke's theme music was playing under that scene.

I wouldn't be disappointed if there is an unexpected twist.

I still think she's Luke's daughter as well, although like Towen, wouldn't be surprised if there was a twist. I mentioned earlier that Kathleen Kennedy said that all the characters at a press event would be back, and Harrison Ford was in attendance, so he will be a part of 8, at least in some form, more than likely flashbacks. OR......Maybe Snoke had Kylo kill his father so that he may take his body? That's pretty out there, but it would make a father/son team to take over the universe, kind of. There was also rumors of Hayden being involved with the series, wonder if his force spirit had something to do with turning Kylo? I've read where it was suggested that it was Vader, not Anakin that was turned back to the light side, so that's what they are working off of. Another stretch.

Maybe she's Luke's daughter. Maybe not. Honestly, I don't know that any blood relation to the Skywalkers is needed in order for the story to hold up. I do think, though, that it could easily be possible. Ben Solo goes to the dark side, slaughters people at the Jedi Academy, maybe even Luke's wife, and Luke goes off into seclusion thinking his daughter dead. Ren is dumped on Jakku by somebody who maybe even thought Luke dead and was trying to hide her from her cousin.

I hope they don't try to get too complicated with this. That's what the EU did and it ended up ruining a good chunk of it.

I truly really like this movie, but that being said, but I think with a movie of this size and scope, fans tend to get a little nit picky about it. I read something in the The Force Awakens visual diary about that electrified "battle axe" or whatever it is called, and the official word is that it was created to fight light sabers. Which is fine, problem is, the only jedi has been in hiding for many years, and did they really expect a light saber to be in play at maz's? Rey had just found it right before they showed up.

Yeah ... It's tough to not sound critical or nit-pickey. I really liked the movie too. Any "holes" or "issues" I'm talking about are just little things that could have made the movie a tiny bit better ... to me.

I saw that same refererence about the baton to being used to fight light sabers. Regardless of why it was originally designed for it'd still be an effective and useful melee weapon. I don't mind it being used but I do have to roll my eyes about it appearing that there was only one with the squad and the one guy that had it happened to only want to deploy it when he was alone and face-to-face with Fin. I don't recall seeing it before or after that scene. It came off a little like writers needed to have a light saber battle with Fin and didn't want to go straight to having him fight Kylo Ren, so they tacked on a fight with a Storm Trooper. If that weapon had been seen elsewhere in the movie (and maybe it was) than maybe it wouldn't have come across as contrived to the fans.

Rey is Luke's daughter. Luke is going to train her and they will defeat the evil. Then Rey will teach the next generation of Jedi. You heard it here first. If Luke dies, it should be in the next movie, but probably won't. An untrained Rey is stronger than a trained Ren, so it shouldn't be much of a match but Disney will make it that way.

The real dark side here is that if this something this poorly done can generate these bucks, imagine what the future looks like.

This touches most of the bases: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2488496/board/thread/251802800?p=1

I got to see this last Sunday. I don't know how you all feel about it, but I think I like ep7 better then Return of the Jedi. It's definitely better than the prequels. It is a lot like a rehash of A New Hope, but honestly, I liked it that way.

I kinda hope Rey isn't Luke's daughter. It won't bum me out if she is, but as big as galaxies are, there should be no reason why the force has to be "kept within the family". On another note, I like the point Walls made about Finn. I think him being in sanitation, makes his role more believable. He's not able to kill as we saw in the first scene. We don't know if that was his first rodeo in battle either. He could have failed at an earlier mission, so maybe that could be a reason why he's in sanitation. he has the training of a trooper, so he more than able to defend himself.

I liked Kylo Ren being portrayed as a conflicted individual. Obviously, he aspires to be the next Vader, but has some sort of doubt of his abilities if he can rise to that level (as Rey revealed to him, when trying to read her mind). His temper tantrums, to me, are an example of how he's not able to control his anger as Vader was able to. He's like the opposite of Luke during ep 4-5. Their powers are strong, but they haven't peaked. Rey seems to be like the light side version of Anakain. She is strong with the force as he was (which Ren mentions after learning of her escape) and I think that was one reason why she was able to hold her own against an injured Kylo Ren.

It's a lot like the old trilogy, but I liked it that way. About the only two things I didn't like was Han's death, even though I kinda expected something like this would happen. I was hoping to see more of the chrome storm trooper (Phasma?). It seems that character was played up as much as Kylo Ren, but she had such a small role compared to the other new characters.

I've heard JJ Abrams won't be behind the wheel of the next two films, so I'm concerned on that level. I liked Return of the Jedi, but imo it stunk compared to Empire Strikes Back. I'm hoping ep 8-9 don't follow the same path.

Fin states that his little freak-out was on his first combat mission. Phasma says that he was sent to her unit for re-training. I'm going with the theory that he was enslaved as a child and has worked in several capacities as he grew up.

I too was disappointed with Phasma's very limited role. That character was a major part of the marketing leading up to the movie. I expected her to get a lot more screen time. Instead we got three scenes; she gives the order to slaughter the villagers establishing she's ruthless, she explains that Fin had never demonstrated any disobedience before, and later gives zero resistance to lowering the shields (and allowing the Star Killer Base to be destroyed) and getting tossed in a garbage compactor. If she's going to appear in future movies we'll need a plausible explanation on how Hux gets knows she's in there and gets her out before finding Kylo Ren out in the snow.

Phasma is supposed to figure much larger in future movies... they've said this. It will be interesting to see why the chromed out armor.

Hopefully she makes for a good villain. Hux just never quite seemed to be quite as determinedly evil as Palpatine, Vader, or Tarkin. He seemed more like a "That resistance girl didn't go out with me. I'LL KILL THEM ALL." Just seems like he has a fedora somewhere in his quarters.

So, how did everyone else like this movie compared to the other 6? I'm curious to know, as it seems to get way better reviews than the prequels. If I had to rate them, then probably........

Ep 4 A New Hope
Ep 5 Empire Strikes Back
Ep 7 Force Awakens
Ep 6 Return of the Jedi
Ep 3 Revenge of the Sith
Ep 2 Attack of the Clones
Ep 1 The Phantom Menace

I don't expect the next two to be as good as ep 4 or 5, but I do hope they are as good as 7 if not better. If not and they are as good as Return, then I'll still be happy as long as it makes sense. I liked Return, but I had issues with how only a few Rebels and a throng of oversized teddy bears with rocks and sticks could overtake the Emperor's "legion of my finest stormtroopers" on Endor.

I wish they hadn't played it so safe in the new one, but the acting was top notch. I saw where one article called it a "remakequel" and that isn't that far off the mark. I don't hate the prequels as much as other people do, but this is for sure better than those, and right up there with the first three.

One thing I didn't like, was Kylo Ren's attire. Darth Vader was always so commanding in his look, Kylo comes off more homeless or emo looking, which is maybe what they want, and his wardrobe will grow with him in the next movie. I did see some still art for the movie, and at one point they had a very dark side looking Anakin. I'm betting that Anakin does play a major role in turning him to the dark side in the next movie.

Episode 5: ESB
Episode 4: ANH
Episode 7: TFA
Episode 6: ROTJ

I'm sorry of it sounds like fanboy raving but I disliked Episodes 1, 2, and 3 so much that I prefer to not consider them part of the series. If you twist my arm I'd rank them ..

Episode 3
Episode 2
Episode 1

I'd rate them (best to worst):

Empire Strikes Back
(tie) A New Hope
(tie) The Force Awakens
(gap)
Return of the Jedi
(tie) Revenge of the Sith
(tie) Attack of the Clones
(HUGE GAP)
The Phantom Menace

ROTJ is a little overrated; the Ewoks just strike me as a beta test for what eventually became Jar Jar and the Gungans- cutesy comic relief that is forced on the movie. The crappy acting of the prequels throw them all down below the original trilogy and the new one. I think Episodes 2 and 3 get a lot of flack that isn't deserved; with better performances out of the actors they'd be more beloved. Yeah, they needed work, but there were the bones of decent stories in there.

Episode 1 gets the basement by itself. It does nothing for the story being told with the exception of screwing up the Force with that midichlorian crap. The only thing it has going for it is a fun lightsaber fight at the end. The rest is cheesy and is a boring story poorly told. Nothing about the conflict really causes viewers to care.

Do you guys feel that any off the elements of the prequel trilogy was hashed out several years (as in closer to the ending of the OT vs closer to production of the PT) before they went to production of "Episode 1?" Aside form the prequels being tonally/visually "off," another one of my gripes is that many parts of the story lines in the PT come off like Lucas was flying by the seat of his pants and making much of it up as he went along. There are just SO many inconsistencies.....I could be off but about the only thing that I recall being established before the prequels, is that Vader's injurys and the result came at the hands or had something to do with Obi-wan.

BTW my ranking are:

TESB
TFA
ANH
ROTJ

E3
E2
E1

Interesting. Seems we all share the same view in rankings give or take ep 4 or 5 being the best.

I wonder about that Chris. To me there seems to be a big gap between 3 and 4. I kinda like the idea of the storm troopers and Boba Fett are clones of Jenga Fett. Even when watching Empire as a kid, I always thought Boba looked similar to the storm troopers.

I don't hate the prequels, but they are not anywhere as good as ep 7 (sorry George, but JJ got it right). The three biggest issues with the Phantom Menace was the big age difference between Anakain and Padme, The Midichlorian thing about the Force, and Jar-Jar Binks. The shitty acting didn't help either, but I can still watch it and there's that Pod race that seemed to last forever that wasn't crucial to the story. 2 and 3 were much better, though I'm not a big fan of Hayden's Anakain. Honestly, I could view the saga as a 4 movie quadrilogy and be cool with it.

I do hope JJ is onboard for the next two.

I think the goal in this film is Kylo is aspiring to be as great as Vader was, but has his doubts at times. The mask was something that he chose to wear to honor Vader. He didn't have to have it to survive like Vader did. That totally makes sense to me and I actually like him more because of that. We're seeing him "grow" as a Sith warrior much like we saw Luke grow as a Jedi ep5. Luke was more of a true Jedi in Return, so I expect to see Kylo's growth as an evil Sith lord to be more complete in ep 8 as well. One of the things Luke was always told was to never give into anger. Clearly Kylo gave into his in ep7. Luke and Kylo are polar opposites, so it works for me as long as Kylo isn't still portrayed as a "wannbe" Sith in the next two. It works in 7, but we should see some growth in the next two like we saw of Luke in Return. I'm hoping to see Kylo as more ruthless than ever and in contrast see Luke more like a Yoda level Jedi in the next two.

I would also like to know more of Snoke's origins and how he came to power.

Yeah, in ANH you get the feeling that the Clone Wars were a LONG time ago. Obi Wan is hitting senior citizen age, as are Owen and Beru Lars. I had always thought of Anakin as being older when he fathered Luke and Leia. You also get the feeling the Empire has been around a long time too. Basically, it just seemed like the Clone Wars and everything else would have been something like 30-40 years before the starts of ANH. Then the prequels collapse things down. For the Jedi to have been wiped out only 20 years before there seems to be a massive amount of ignorance about them and the Force in ANH.

Basically, there just doesn't seem to have been enough time from the end of the Clone Wars to the start of ANH for any of this to have happened. The result was mass galactic amnesia.

Now, TFA manages to deal with this better- thirty years is longer, there wasn't as much of a Jedi presence in the galaxy before Kylo Ren's fall to the dark side so it's believable people aren't all that sure about the Jedi and the Force. There's still more to be explained, but like the rabbi said when he got his new ram's horn, "Shofar, so good."

I'm not sure I was clear, Akula....your answer may still be the same. But my statements were more about a backstory/storyboard/screenplay standpoint. If you were to watch some interviews with Lucas and others involved, that he had the stories kinda mapped out to an extent (meaning the prequels). But the prequels don't seem that way at all, at least to me. And some things were just utter nonsense, like Anakin creating C3PO. I do recall in ANH, Obi-wan calling Anakin, "Ani" and the Clone Wars were mentioned. I guess simply put, how much substantial story was present even though the first Star Wars movie ever and cinematic launching point was "Episode 4?"
