The Best of Chicago - 40th Anniversary Limited Edition -- 2 CD Set

Chicago

2007 Rhino Records

Product Description

Formed in its namesake city in 1967, Chicago is the first American band ever to chart albums in Billboard®’s Pop Top 40 in five consecutive decades. Now Rhino adds to Chicago’s legacy and salutes their 40th anniversary with a newly compiled 2-CD collection that spans their entire recording history, from the stellar 1969 debut LP Chicago Transit Authority to Chicago XXX. I need to get more of these things. Someone on this board recommended another one, which I got and discovered Scott Hamilton; there's some great music on this one as well! :music-listening:

It took many, many months.

It took many dollars.

It took paying off my house before I was comfortable paying $125 for a used SACD of an album I already owned.

It took ordering from three different vendors before I actually got it.

I decided to splurge and get the order "Overnight Delivery". Everything in the order came overnight except this disk.

The mailman slid it between my front screen and main door, a door I rarely use.

I went thru that door this morning with my camera/tripod, watching carefully so I didn't bump my camera, hence stepping on the package!! :scared-yipes: :scared-yipes: :scared-yipes: The gods do not want me to have/hear this disk!

Fortunately, no damage done. I finally have it:

 ;) I bought a used copy for $125. It's immaculate, not even a crack in the case (as most used CD's seem to have).
Haven't listened to it yet, I'm building up to it...

Nice, I may to check it out, though in a somewhat less expensive format. ;) If were going to treat myself, it'd probably be to the Bill Evans complete Fantasy (label) recordings, a 9 CD set that goes for ~ $90. Maybe when I get my tax return...

I've always wanted Jennifer Warnes "Famous Blue Raincoat" on remastered Vinyl, but it goes for $100 and I just can't bring myself to spend $100 on a Record. It is actually a 3 record set, but still....$100?!

I'll keep waiting for a "Deal"!

I actually had a "Klipsch" forum member offer to sell me one for $90, but I think if I were going to spend $90 on a used copy, I would go ahead and spend the extra $10 and get it new.

Bringing It All Back Home -- CD

Bob Dylan

1990 Columbia Records

Amazon.com essential recording

"You sound like you're having a good old time," a purist Dylan fan is spotted telling the artist in the documentary Don't Look Back just after the release of this, his first (half-) electric album. He certainly does. Updating Chicago blues forms with hilarious, tough lyrics--in fact, all but stealing the meter of Chuck Berry's "Too Much Monkey Business" for "Subterranean Homesick Blues"--on one side, dropping some of his most devastating solo acoustic science ("It's All Over Now, Baby Blue," "Mr. Tambourine Man") on the other, the first of Dylan's two 1965 long-players broke it right down with style, substance, and elegance. --Rickey Wright

All songs written by Bob Dylan.
Side one

1. "Subterranean Homesick Blues" – 2:21
2. "She Belongs to Me" – 2:47
3. "Maggie's Farm" – 3:54
4. "Love Minus Zero/No Limit" – 2:51
5. "Outlaw Blues" – 3:05
6. "On the Road Again"– 2:35
7. "Bob Dylan's 115th Dream"– 6:30

Hits/Greatest & Others -- CD

Joan Baez

1973/1986 Vanguard Records

Hits: Greatest and Others was a 1973 compilation Vanguard put together at the end of Joan Baez' association with their label. In addition to her hit cover of The Band's "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", songs by the Beatles and Kris Kristofferson were also included. Unlike previous compilations, this one skipped over most of Baez' earlier traditional material almost entirely, in favor of her more recent singer-songwriter material and covers.

1. "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" (Robbie Robertson)
2. "Dangling Conversation" (Paul Simon)
3. "Help Me Make It Through The Night" (Kris Kristofferson)
4. "Blessed Are..." (Joan Baez)
5. "Eleanor Rigby" (John Lennon/Paul McCartney)
6. "Let It Be" (John Lennon/Paul McCartney)
7. "There But For Fortune" (Phil Ochs)
8. "The Brand New Tennessee Waltz" (Jesse Winchester)
9. "I Pity The Poor Immigrant" (Bob Dylan)
10. "Love Is Just a Four-Letter Word" (Bob Dylan)
11. "Heaven Help Us All" (Roger Miller)

The Last Waltz -- 2 CD Box Set

The Band

1978/ 1990 Warner Bros. Records

Amazon.com

"As you might have heard, we got a couple of friends joining in with us tonight," mutters Robbie Robertson dryly. Recorded at San Francisco's Winterland on Thanksgiving Day 1976, the Band's swan song is a rousing celebration, not a bittersweet eulogy. The friends in question: Ronnie Hawkins, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Neil Diamond, Dr. John, Paul Butterfield, Muddy Waters, Pinetop Perkins, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, Ron Wood, Ringo Starr. Add studio sequences featuring the Staples and Emmylou Harris, and you have a pretty formidable supporting cast for the Band, who always did quite well on their own. All involved have done better work elsewhere, but that's far beside the point, which is that anyone who wasn't there should be very, very jealous. --Marc Greilsamer

Greatest Hits -- CD

Alice Cooper

1974/1990 Warner Bros. Records

Amazon.com

If it weren't for Alice Cooper's onstage antics, Kiss, Marilyn Manson and Glen Danzig might have evolved into summery pop artists suitable for family picnics. Yet as Alice Cooper's Greatest Hits record attests, the grandfather of shock rock brought much more to the rock arena than boa constrictors and simulated decapitations. In addition to classic hard rock anthems like "I'm Eighteen," "No More Mr. Nice Guy," and "School's Out," Cooper unleashed rollicking barroom rockers like "Under My Wheels" and tugged at the heartstrings with cuts like "Desperado" and "Hello Hooray." In retrospect, his songs have more in common with the Who and the Faces than with Black Sabbath or Judas Priest. But his songs were filled with soaring choruses and grandiose horn embellishes that proved he could be larger than life both on and off the stage. --Jon Wiederhorn

Worth Every Penny!!!!

Ah, life is good! Bob Clearmountain and Rhett Davies were both called back to do the 5.1 remix, and they didn't f*ck it up. There are a few tom hits that aren't on the stereo recording, and I'm hearing things I haven't before (as is usually the case with a new SACD); what's even cooler is there is a somewhat cheesy organ part that occurs twice in Take a Chance, my favorite Roxy cut ever. Well, they took it out the first occurrence (but it popped back in in the second :x ). One instrumental track, "India" they couldn't find the original multitrack, only the final stereo master, so they started it as a normal stereo playback (possible some additional ambience in the surrounds) but then it started sliding to the right, so soon the left channel was in the right speaker, and the right speaker is in the right surround; it continues that way, rotating around you, and surprisingly it works (the piece is less than two minutes long).
The mix in the surrounds is not always just ambience, you can sometimes have the sax coming from behind your right shoulder and the sax echo over your left, but with this kind of music it works; it's all about the "atmosphere"...
There is also an additional track, which fits right in with the album (some unusual chord progressions). They could've easily included it on the original album, which was only 37 minutes long iirc, good to hear something new from the same period.

I'm a happy camper! :music-listening: :music-listening: :music-listening:

I really enjoy this album....

Feels So Good CD

Chuck Mangione

1977/1990 A&M Records

The man with the flugel horn sure can play!!, December 15, 2000
By Glenn "Glenn98" (Bergenfield, NJ USA) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Feels So Good (Audio CD)
The Grammy winning title cut "Feels so Good" is what turned me on to Chuck Mangione's music. But this CD goes much further than that. ALL of the recordings here are excellent. And they are arranged alternating the fast and slow pieces in a pleasing way. "Maui Waui" and "Last Dance" are nice and relaxing. "Theme from Side Street" is short but meaningful. "Hide and Seek" is a catchy piece that will have you tapping to it. And "The XIth Commandment" is a brilliant end to this great CD.

This is by far Chuck's best recording. If you're in a qundary about which Chuck Mangione CD to buy, THIS IS THE ONE!

1. Feels So Good - 9:42 (edit: #4 pop, #1 AC)
2. Maui-Waui - 10:13
3. Theme From 'Side Street' - 2:05
4. Hide & Seek (Ready Or Not Here I Come) - 6:25
5. Last Dance - 10:54
6. The XIth Commandment - 6:36
