Time and Time Again -- CD

Paul Motian - Bill Frisell - Joe Lovano

2007 ECM Records

By NENAD GEORGIEVSKI, 2008

There's always magic in the air whenever Paul Motian , Bill Frisell and Joe Lovano get together and this album is no exception. A sequel to the brilliant I Have the Room Above Her (ECM, 2005), this is another master painting by these fine artists. Jazz has always favored individual voices and expressionism, and these players have proven themselves undisputed masters on their instruments. But jazz also favors teamwork, something that is definitely evident on Time and Time Again. Several decades on, the musical partnership between drummer Motian, saxophonist Lovano and guitarist Frisell is stronger than ever.

Since no bass or piano is used here, whatever the band tries to express is done in a reflective and calm manner. Contemplation is the key word. The musicians create an alluring aural palette that mesmerizes, mystifies and beguiles. They breathe throughout as one organism, building subtle layers on tracks such as the meditative "Cambodia" and "Light Blue," shifting harmonic constructions seamlessly on the raucous "OneTwo" and wandering lonely towards the spontaneous improvisation "In Remembrance of Things Past." "Wednesday" has some beautiful whirling sax melodies, with Motian's elegant brushes sounding like birds' wings. The overall setting is perfect for Frisell's relaxed, lyric style, his guitar providing beautiful tapestries. All of the compositions have an ethereal and fluid quality, thus giving an impression of almost effortless improvisational mastery.

From the opening of "Cambodia" until the closing title track, the compositions have a strange and creative dreaminess about them. One moment things are sneakily avant-garde, the next, conservatively lyrical. As a collective experiment in spontaneous collaboration, Time and Time Again is a great success.

The Essential Louis Armstrong -- 2 CD Set

Louis Armstrong

2004 Columbia Legacy

Pops-- The king of jazz trumpet, March 1, 2007
By Annie Van Auken (Planet Earth) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME)

This review is from: Essential Louis Armstrong (Audio CD)

THE ESSENTIAL LOUIS ARMSTRONG is a sweeping overview of THE most influential jazz musician of the 20th Century. Disc one contains Armstrong's New Orleans-styled electrical recordings of the late '20's (note that he had made some acoustic horn stuff prior), while the second CD continues the early sides until midway through, and then offers brief glimpses of Satchmo's career from 1938 to '67.

To mention a single outstanding example, Armstrong's early beautiful tone is clearly evident on his trumpet intro to 1928's "West End Blues," as is his fine scat voice. Beyond that track, all of disc one is certain to be a revelation to those only familiar with Louis' "Hello Dolly" pop-type tunes.

Mastering of the antique 78s in particular is remarkable-- they all sound great! THE ESSENTIAL LOUIS ARMSTRONG is a set that belongs in everyone's collection, not just jazz afficionados. Buy with confidence!

21 -- CD

Adele

2011 XL/Columbia Records

Product Description

21 is the eagerly awaited sophomore album from British singer-songwriter Adele. It’s the follow up to Adele’s critically acclaimed, Grammy award winning debut album 19 (both named after her age at the time the songs were written). Recorded in Malibu and London, 21 offered Adele the opportunity to work with such luminary producers and songwriters as Rick Rubin, Paul Epworth, Ryan Tedder, Dan Wilson and Fraser T. Smith, as well as continuing to work with Francis “Eg” White and Jim Abbiss.

This new collection of songs showcases the growth of this incredible artist, who at the very young age of twenty two, exhibits the poise of a seasoned veteran. Adele’s music takes some new direction while staying true to her signature style. “I discovered lots of artists I'd never heard of, particularly Wanda Jackson, Allison Krauss, Yvonne Fair, Andrew Bird, Neko Case, Lady Antebellum and Steel Drivers who I fell in love with. Then I delved in to more from artists I've loved forever - Mary J. Blige, Kanye West, Elbow, Mos Def, Alanis Morissette, Tom Waits and Sinead O'Connor. There's something in every single one of these artists that have really really inspired 21.”

Sigh No More -- CD

Mumford & Sons

2010 Glass Note Records

Product Description

Mumford & Sons, West London indie rock quartet, have created a gutsy, old-time sound that marries the magic of Crosby, Stills & Nash with the might of Kings of Leon and the harmonies of Fleet Foxes. Sigh No More was recorded at Eastcoast Studios, where Arctic Monkeys, Brian Eno, Tindersticks and Laura Marling have honored their sound. The band teamed with producer Markus Dravs who has worked with such superstar acts as Arcade Fire, Bjork and Peter Gabriel. Sigh No More was recently released in the UK to critical accolades. The album debut in the UK iTunes Top 10 recently and is being lauded by tastemaker publications. The first single, Little Lion Man , is already being boasted as The Hottest Record in the World by Radio 1's Zane Lowe, and the band has been long listed for the BBC Sounds of 2008 Pool, which features the most promising new music talent.
Formed in 2007, that band's goal since day one has been to make music that matters. Before recording their debut, Mumford & Sons self produced three EP's and toured the UK extensively, bringing their rootsy rock across the country. The band recently wrapped a handful of well-received performances during the annual CMJ Music Marathon in New York, which left Time Out NY to comment, The Brit combo has a spine-tingling way to harmony.

Standards Volume 1 -- CD

Stanley Jordan

1986 Manhattan Records

Amazon.com

Guitarist Stanley Jordan's extensive use of tapping, using each hand independently on the instrument's fret board to create separate parts simultaneously, was a major technical breakthrough for the instrument when he first appeared in the early '80s. He could play the instrument much like a piano, whether mixing lead and rhythm or adding bass lines to chords. The technique has never been more apparent than on this 1986 session of unaccompanied guitar, with Jordan crossing musical boundaries to play songs from both the jazz and pop idioms. The "standards" of the title might as easily refer to technical ones as to Jordan's mixed repertoire. His playing here is often simply dazzling; the ease and fluent invention of his runs would still be impressive if another guitarist were supplying the accompaniments. But there's real warmth, too, on "Georgia on My Mind" and "Silent Night." --Stuart Broomer

The George Benson Collection -- CD

George Benson

The definitive Benson compilation, minus one..., September 19, 2005
By K. Lorenc (MA, USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)

This review is from: The George Benson Collection (Audio CD)

If you only buy one George Benson CD, this is the best all-around retrospective; but be warned--those of us who grew up with the album version (you remember albums, don't you?) will be disappointed to learn that "Cast Your Fate to the Wind," one of the LPs best instrumental cuts, was deleted from the CD in order to contain it to a single disc. Other than that (significant) flaw, it's good to hear the classic guitar work and stellar vocals on CD.

UnReel -- CD

Randy Waldman

2001 Concord Jazz

Quick, name the last time you heard a cover of "Schindler's List" on the same recording as a heartfelt, orchestral-flavored reading (by original artist Michael Sembello!) of the cheesy Flashdance classic "Maniac." Not recently? What about a frenetic jazz jam of the theme from The Jetsons alongside "Mannix" and "Forrest Gump"?

That sort of unique, tongue-in-cheek playfulness alongside some serious jamming by the jazz elite sums up the concept of this project. One of the most in demand pianist/keyboardists in music, Randy Waldman has recorded with everyone from Michael Jackson and Madonna to George Benson and Frank Sinatra. He brings his myriad talents as pianist, arranger, and trumpeter to this collection, artfully rearranging these pieces and performing them with a virtuostic jazz twist.

The disc features the dynamic interplay of Waldman's trio (John Patitucci, Vinnie Colaiuta) and a lineup of guests including Michael and Randy Brecker, Gary Burton, Branford Marsalis, Tom Scott, and Ernie Watts. Expect the unexpected, is what Waldman and his spirited pals seem to be telling listeners. Waldman goes the heartfelt, mostly solo route for a straightforward jazzy approach to "Forrest Gump," then goes crazy improvising off the hook on "The Jetsons" and "Leave It to Beaver." "My Favorite Things" and "Schindler's List" (featuring Marsalis on soprano) are given true film score/jazz trio renderings, while "Hawaii Five-O" utilizes the great horn energy of Randy Brecker and Gary Grant. "America" (the West Side Story version) features some of Waldman's most percussive work.

It would be easy to play this sort of collection straight, but it's more in the spirit of great jazz to have this much fun. ~ Jonathan Widran

Renee Olstead -- CD

Renee Olstead

2004 Reprise Records

Outstanding new vocalist, May 25, 2004
By Wilfred555 (Nowhere Special)

This review is from: Renee Olstead (Audio CD)

Renee Olstead could turn out to be the discovery of the decade. With a voice as nuanced, versatile and downright charming as they come she's about to set the musical world on fire with the release of her first major-label album.

The fact that Renee's still in high school (!) may give her extra credit, but she doesn't need it. This jazzy-bluesy torch singer can easily hold her own with the big gals like Norah Jones and Diana Krall while evoking the young Doris Day and even Roberta Flack.

"Renee Olstead" has several break-out tunes which stay in your head for hours, including her spellbinding and swirly "Summertime," her impeccably voiced "Is You Is Or Is You Ain't My Baby" and her deliriously beautiful remake of Maria Muldaur's signature song, "Midnight at the Oasis."

Unlike other famous musical wunderkinds whose precocity (and notoriety) is much more apparent than their artistry, Renee Olstead doesn't overachieve in the slightest. Rather, she is utterly convincing as an assured and adept stylist with an affinity for music given to few.

After hearing this extraordinary album I can fully understand the raves it's been getting from professional critics as well as their collective disbelief that this is "just a kid" singing.

1. "Summertime" (Gershwin, Gershwin, Heyward) ? 4:12
2. "Taking a Chance on Love" (Duke, Fetter, Latouche) ? 3:31
3. "Is You Is or Is You Ain't My Baby" (Austin, Jordan) ? 3:20
4. "Someone to Watch Over Me" (Gershwin, Gershwin) ? 4:26
5. "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do" (Greenfield, Sedaka) ? 4:11
6. "A Love That Will Last" (Foster, Thompson) ? 3:32
7. "Meet Me, Midnight" (Manilow, Sussman) ? 2:56
8. "Sunday Kind of Love" (Belle, Nye, Prima, Rhodes) ? 4:34
9. "On a Slow Boat to China" (Loesser) ? 3:16
10. "What a Diff'rence a Day Makes" (Adams, Grever) ? 3:27

Any of the Concord/Telarc Samplers are usually good and as I always say, it is a great way to find artists "New To You"!

Make Someone Happy -- CD

Sophie Milman

2007 Koch Records

Review

With her sophomore recording, vocalist Milman trumps her triumphant self-titled debut disc that's already sold almost 100,000 copies. This time on 13 songs, her already confident delivery is even more assured, her new maturity underscored in a well-chosen, eclectic program that finds space for covers of Stevie Wonder's "Rocket Love," the Guess Who's "Undun" and "Matchmaker, Maker" from Fiddler On The Roof. Her delicate title tune work is a delight, as is her cool take on "Fever," and while they hint at youthful innocence there are new reserves of understanding in her fresh interpretations. Top track: It's the unlikely lament of Kermit the Frog, yes, "It's Not Easy Being Green," that's an ever-so-subtle commentary on her life so far. Her future's full of promise she'll prove it again when she guests with barefoot diva Cesaria Evora at Roy Thomson Hall June 28. The record's in stores June 19. --Geoff Chapman - The Toronto Star

Sad to Say Gary Moore died super bowl weekend i think. I think he really found his best when he started playing mostly blues. His newest album "bad for you baby" is very good. On that album the song "have you eve been lonley " Is some of the most enjoyable guitar work ive ever heard. blues fans should check that out.

Gary Moore - I have a couple of his DVD's and his best live I have is on VHS, need to dig up the title. The tape is probably shot, if I can find it!!

Anyway.........one of the best!!!
