What Are You Listening To?

If you don't like this song...there is something wrong with you. This is one of the saving graces of Spotify!!
Love it. But probably wouldn't have known it if not for Guardians of the Galaxy...

September is almost over after all!!!!!
The video may make you dizzy but what a great tune!!
I bought All 'n All the summer between HS and Freshman year, EW&F almost pushed Chicago aside as my favorite band; then as a freshman I heard Aja on a good stereo system, and Chicago/EW&F had to battle for 2nd/3rd.
I do have a disk of a concert featuring both Chicago and EW&F on stage together, but they're both big bands and you had to just quit listening critically and watch Verdine White in the end. :)

You're a youngster, Pauly. ;)

I played in a pretty popular country band based south of Albuquerque, and we played in the Indian casino on the Isleta Pueblo, often with an all-Native-American band (whose name I can't remember), believe they were based out of the Acoma Pueblo. A smokin' country 5-piece, but they had less stage presence than The Cars; their fingers and their arms moved, but otherwise they didn't move at all! None of the four guys in the front even tapped their foot (the drummer did, but he kinda had to). Memory's bringing back a smile. :)

Been listening to some Emo shit lately. (Or Emo-like shit?)

My Chemical Romance, Simple Plan, Evanescence, 30 Seconds To Mars. Didn’t care that much for it the first go around, but now there’s a handful of classics that I’m really into. Probably gonna go all in on the Emo lifestyle. Black hair. Black clothes. Black eye makeup. Girly skinny jeans, too, with a chained-linked black billfold. Well... Maybe not the jeans. I seem to remember seeing a lot of the look back in the day, but these videos seem to indicate otherwise.

Still, after 62 years on this rock, the best album I've ever heard is Steely Dan's Aja. 1978. This VH1 show popped up on EweTube tonight, I think I'd seen it before but it was cool to watch it again. Seeing Michael McDonald complaining about the tight chord voicings, yet not even mentioning his laser-sharp vibrato-matching (this was long before computer recording) is stunning. Not to mention all the interviews with the original players; wow.

Rick Beato just released his "Top Twenty One-Hit Wonders of the 70's"; really brought back memories of Jr High/High School sockhops. And this one, damn it has one of the best bridges ever written, fantastic chord changes!

Good memories.
The one I had NEVER heard of was Never Been Any Reason by Head East. Rick said something to the effect about it was big around the Great Lakes. I was in the middle of the Great Lakes (albeit in another country) and I have never heard this song!!
PS: I Can See Clearly Now is a GREAT song.

There's actually a comment from me on Rick's site; somewhere in the late 2000's my band did a gig at the All-Rank's club at Hill AFB on New Years Eve. We opened the night with Never Been Any Reason, and the dance floor was PACKED! That almost never happens in a military club.

Back in those days, FM radio stations weren't controlled by a single conglomerate like they are now, and I've heard before that Head East was hugely popular, or unknown, dependent on that. Would be interesting to know the whole story. It was popular at ISU in the late 70's.

Windows.

I've always been a huge fan of Todd Rundgren's band Utopia, despite all their warts. Four guys, who collectively played dozens of instruments, all wrote songs, all sang lead, all sang harmonies, over some very complex pop/rock tunes (I got to see them live twice, the first was the loudest concert I've ever attended; sad).
This song was one of the two great songs written by keyboardist Roger Powell (the other being Caravan; the rest of his material was sh*t.) Kasim Sultan sang here. He's easily the most under-rated bassist/vocalist of modern times; I rank him right up there with McCartney and Sting. Prove me Wrong.
Sadly a poor recording, but I hope you can recognize that this was live, no overdubs/editing, no background singers, just four incredibly talented musicians playing as a Band!

EweTube just served up the album cut of Windows, with Roger on vox. The chord changes in this song just blow me away, damn near bebop.
