Holy crap!

That's some major surgery going on there. It awesome that you have the know-how and skill to pull that off. I'm impressed.

Thanks Tom........

Means a lot come from you!

Dad taught me most of the carpentry skills......

I am very pleased with the progress and the work, Up until yesterday, it has been all me and Barb, today ends week 7 and most of the BIG work is complete!!

:music-rockout: :music-rockout:

Excellent example of discarding a structural (load bearing) wall, opening up the room and having just as strong load bearing beam. Good on ya!

Whats the current expected completion target?

I just took a look at what is left to be done and to the best of my ability, guessed at hours needed per task.

Functional room; minus final furniture; second row platform and acoustical panels, I have about 65 hours remaining.

Figuring 15 hours per week working on the room; 4-5 more weeks, unless I really break my ass after work during the week! (15 hours a week is slacking, I know)

Today, 3/25/13 I am 7 weeks in.

Old man my ass at 7 weeks in holding down a job and doing that much work your an animal. There is many young bucks that couldn't do as much as you have with as little time.

Yeah thats right Heeeeeee is the Man.

Awesome job and to think few more weeks of hard work and the rewards roll in hats off to ya.

Been doing some little piddly shit the last 2 nights.

Prepping the walls and ceiling for Spackle and getting some samples of the Off-Broadway Black on the wall and also some Munsell Gray N 5.0.

The black is very, very black and super flat with no sheen at all.

The Munsell Gray Flat has a sheen even though it is a flat paint. I called PPG to see if they have a solution and they told me that the Olympic One Flat (the 1 I have a sample of) has a sheen rating of 0-5. They told me to bring my quart to Pittsburgh Paint, have them match the color and buy their Wall Supreme Flat, it has a sheen of 0-2.

I learned that Olympic is a brand name under PPG.

This is where I struggle; the level of detail that you guy are capable of putting in to this. Don't get me wrong, I really, really respect it. It's just that my attention deficit disorder prevents me from paying attnetion to sheen ratings and such.

Keith,

I did not comment earlier on your paint selection since by the time I saw it you'd already bought the black. But since you seem to be still open to options...

I can't find my originals notes from back when I did my main HT, but I still have the paint can / formulation. I researched this quite a bit and learned that Benjamin Moore had developed a Munsell Neutral Gray for HTs. I don't recall the number but you could call it a medium gray.

They use their Deep Base 319 3B (at the time) (an eggshelll interior acrylic latex enamel) and the formulation is:

UTC Gallon Formula

YW 0x 26.00
OY 0x 7.00
BK 0x 4.00
GY 0x 12.00

I strongly recommend that you consider it - assuming you're still open to suggestion.

Jeff

Jeff,

I have decided to use a totally neutral gray on the side walls. We are looking at the Munsell Scale because of the neutral colors that will not influence the projected picture (colors) on the screen. The flatter the better because we do not want reflection.

Many paint stores including, Sherwin Williams and Pittsburgh Paints could not help me with Munsell Grays, even when they called there tech help line, and told me that I would have to bring in a swatch so that they could color match.

One day I was in Lowes and was explaining to the Assit. Mgr, the bullshit that I went through with the Roxul Safe n Sound order and questioned him about the Munsell Gray. I told him that I had the Spectral Analysis that I printed out from the Internet. Well he told me to bring it in and he could see what he could do.

The other day, I went in and he was off, however the other MGR told me that the Olympic Rep was in and maybe he could help me, and he did. The tech line gave him the following for N4, N5 and N6.

Munsell Gray

Lowe's; Flat Olympic One

N4
Base 5

101 - 3y13
105 - 5y2
113 - 5y15.5
115 - 15.5

N5
Base 3

101 - 5y32
214 - 2y11.5
217 - 46

N6
Base 3

101 - 2y18
107 - 1y2
115 - 42

Benjamin Moore is a tough find down here, in fact up North that was the only paint that I used.

Do you know where that gray lands on the Munsell Scale?

I will definitely not use Eggshell due to it's sheen, I want to use something that will not reflect the light coming back from the screen.

Always open to suggestions!

I just spoke to Larry at BM and requested Home Theater Gray and he told me that BM did not have that.

I then described the Munsell Neutral Gray N 5.0 and he recommended a 2121-20 that is close.

I then gave him the info that Jeff posted from his can of paint and he told me that he could not help me with that, however maybe the local BM store in Canada did some leg work to develop that prescription for that particular gray.

I will look to see if there is a new local BM dealer her and bring them that prescription for the BM HT Gray.

Keith,

Ok - I did some more digging. How far? Well I had to log on to the S&V site to check out some of my old posts!

Here's one of them.

Folks,

Thought I''d share some info.

I used past threads / posts of Forum members to help educate myself on paint colours for the changes I''ll be making to my main HT.

One of those led to the Munsell Neutral Value Scale - a 31 step scale ranging from white to black (Value 2.0 to Value 9.5, in 1/4 step increments).

The problem is that when you ask almost any paint store about it, all you get are dumb looks.

So I emailed Benjamin Moore and here''s what they got back to me with - within 24 hours!

"Munsell Gray at Value 6.5 is our standard gray as the color of the background/surround for visually assessing colors under standard lighting. This is also the standard recommended by other professional organizations. We have custom matched this Munsell Gray (Value=6.5) with Benjamin Moore paints. This color prescription is available but we do not have a physical sample.

The formula is for a gallon format of Benjamin Moore Collection Interior Latex Eggshell, product 319-3B as follows:

3 1/4 OY, 19 BK, 1 1/4 RX, 6 GY, 17 WH

You may print this e-mail and bring it to your local retailer who can mix the formula for you."

I still need to track down an actual colour sample to see if Value 6.5 is where I think it is on the scale. I''m guessing that it''s somewhere between medium and dark gray - which is exactly what I''m looking for. My black acoustic panels / treatments (just arrived yesterday) for the ceilings / side walls should provide a nice contrast.

In a later post (ie. after I'd used the paint) I described it as medium to light gray. Looking at the walls right now I'm leaning closer to calling them medium than light.

As for reflectivity with that base: it's never been an issue for me BUT my walls and ceiling are largely covered with black acoustic panels (~60% and nearly 100% at all the reflection points - which will be the same for light or sound.) Slight correction: it was an issue with the front wall - where light passes through the screen and can get reflected back through. First time I noticed it was with Battlestar Galactica's closing credits (bright white lettering scrolling on a pitch black background.) A few dollars of black fabric pinned to the front wall took care of that. (And my centre stack speakers have dark chocolat covers so they're not a problem.) So If I were ever repainting I would re-do the front wall in a black Munsell Neutral Value.

Hope that helps.

Jeff

Jeff,

Yes, it helps, thanks!

I have located a BM Dealer and will be going soon to see what type of response I get from them. I will bring the prescription for your paint color.

I currently have about 1' x 1' patch of the Munsell N 5.0 Gray on a white wall. Last night I painted a 1' x 1' swatch of the Off-Broadway Black near a corner and I will be painting the N 5.0 on the adjoining corner to see if the gray is to dark or not compared to the black. Darker is much better than lighter in what I have learned.

The devil is in the details!

Keith
