Heeman - Dedicated HT Room?

We have one existing window in the HT Room that we were going to frame and sheetrock over. However we have been looking for other options and it looks like we are going to go this route.

http://www.blackoutez.com/

It looks like an inexpensive simple solution which will allow us to let light in during the day to clean the room and even air it out if we would like.

Has anyone here used it before?

^--- that looks pretty cool, actually. I've got a couple windows in my HT that I might even consider getting that for. Why don't you buy one and test it out for us?

Received the recessed lights yesterday.

Brought the White trim rings to work today and painted them flat black.

The Valspar; Almost Charcoal is the most neutral of all the colors along with the Special Mix of the Olympic One. It is almost and exact Munsell N 5.0 Gray.

http://www.colorcodehex.com/7d7d7d/

Now the challenge is to find a flat with very little sheen/gloss that can handle being wiped. The Olympic One flat has too much sheen/gloss.

PPG has a product "Wall Supreme", I will visit these guys this afternoon and see how close they can match this color.

I am learning so much from this Neutral Gray/Flat paint investigation.

Getting Paint color, even with the computerized dispensers, to be identical is almost impossible. I have been told this by the tech lines at PPG, Glidden and Benjamen Moore. This is due to calibration, environment and tolerances. You can get close, but never perfect.

Gloss/Sheen

Flat/Matte paint's gloss/sheen can be 0 - 5. This is the tolerance range of the base paint, prior to the pigments that are added to achieve the desired color. This will add to the sheen as well. The Tech's at the manufacturers have told me that when the paint is manufactured, the lot is measured and if the sheen is between 0 - 5, the paint qualifies to be called "Flat".

So, if a paint is spec'd at 0 -3 it is very possible it is a 3 and it has been explained to me that you can never tell the difference between a 3 and a 5. 0 and 5, yes.

My conclusion is that now understanding the variables with color and sheen, I have WAY OVER ANALYZED trying to find the most neutral/flat gray for the HT Walls.

It was fun learning however!!

All color science and paint chemistry is cool but... at the end of the day... it still grey paint in a dark room.

^ Neutral Gray to limit the effect on the color of the projected image and a non-reflective gray to minimize/eliminate reflection of the projected image that can negatively effect the Picture Quality.

I get it. I really do.

I truely admire your attention to detail. My ADD would just never let me get close to that. I'd narrow it down to "grey" enough, and "black" enough and "flat" enough and move on to something else. But thats just me and my short attention span. I'd probably be a lot more successful if I wasn't this way.

If you put that on a canvas, framed it, and advertised it on eBay as painted by a gay hemophiliac who died in a tragic weed whacker accident, you could probably make millions, and then fly us all to Texas to break in your theater! :handgestures-thumbup:

The room now has lights!!

Some bracing and plumbing in the way in the attic, however nothing that we could not overcome.

Getting closer and closer!!

Just an observation. My room has can lights in the corners as it seems yours does as well. I often wish that the lights at the front and rear were independently controllable. There are times that I want a little light in the back of the room while leaving the front dark. Maybe to load a disc or when watchingm football when there's a crowd in the room.

The light positioning is deceiving in the photo's. The lights are 3' from the side walls and 6' back from the front and back walls.

I did run an additional switch wire to separate the front from the back, however right now they are both on one switch until I decide on what dimmer and if I end up splitting them.

Major structural work - done
New power circuits for lights and equipment - done
Post graduate degree in color science - done
Drywall work - almost done

Sounds like you're getting close to being able to enjoy the fruits of your labor.

When I get home from the dump, I will get some more spackle on the walls and ceiling and begin construction on the equipment closet. The will be built in the garage with access from the back by a door and open to the theater framed in molding.

I better get to work!!
