What Movie(s) Did You Watch Today?

Accuweather says it's 83F and 66% humidity with a "Real Feel" of 92F. I'm throwing away my outdoor to-do list in favor of my central air and HT.

Gonna give this a first viewing in a matter of minutes.

Someone asked me if I was planning to see Pixels. Without even seeing the movie I'd be willing to bet my paycheck that this review is spot on...
"I didn't merely hate this movie, I wanted to beat it slowly to death with a wiffle ball bat so it'd take fucking longer."
:laughing-rolling: I'm dying over here.

Watched an odd one last night -- Repo! The Genetic Opera.

Not sure I could recommend this one. It tries, but to me fell short.

Pauly I agree I loved the Imitation Game about the guy who invented the first computer basically to break the enigma code. Very interesting and how he had to keep two major secrets and all that' was on the line if either one was exposed.

Wow! Charlize Theron portrays Aileen Wuornos with such magnitude, spot on!

I followed Aileen's life story, trial and death sentence conviction many years ago. There were a few parts of the movie that didn't coincide with the actual story, but overall, pretty spot on.

I took the kids to see it the other morning. Morning because I wouldn't have to give Sandler as much of my money !! Not the worst movie in the world. I sat through Face/Off after all!!

Went on a bit of a movie binge this week:

Lucy
Lucy%2B(2014).jpg

I wouldn't call it great by any stretch, but I went in with REALLY low expectations and was pleasantly surprised. I'll give it 3/5

The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies
th

Loved LOTR. I own the extended version of each movie. This one, I don't think I'll watch again. It wasn't terrible terrible, but it just didn't live up to my expectations. I'll give it 3/5 as well.

John Wick
th

I already had an idea this was basically action/shoot-em-up porn. I stick by that definition. I liked it and would recommend it for someone looking for a good popcorn movie. I'll give it 4/5.

Ip Man
th

Other than it was going to be a kung fu movie with subtitles, I didn't have a clue as to what this movie was about. Turns out it is loosely based on the life of a kung fu master living in China before and during WW2. It was pretty fun. If you're into that kind of thing, I'd say you should watch this one. I'll give it 4/5.

Kick Ass 2
th

Kick Ass is definitely one of my favorite movies -- and was certainly one of the best movie experiences I've had (one of those right place right time kind of things). I went in knowing it couldn't live up to the awesomeness I feel about the first movie. However, even with this built in lowered expectations, I was SOOO disappointed. Boring, lame, dumm (sic), etc. I'm giving this one 1.5/5
(BTW, be VERY careful looking up images for Kick Ass 2 -- so so many are NSFW or taste or morality or...)

Remo Williams
th

If you can get past some of the very un-PC issues with the movie, then this is pretty fun romp. I remember really liking this when it first came out (1985) and I still do... albeit, there is admittedly some nostalgia built into this one. I'll give it 3/5 (younger TKoP would probably have given it a 4.5/5)

Kung Fu Hustle
th

I actually didn't watch the whole thing -- I've seen in 3-4 times already, but it came on and I really like the movie, especially the beginning. So, although i didn't watch the whole thing, I did start it and I have seen the whole movie. Like I said, I really like this movie - I give it 4.5/5

Watched The Counselor this weekend. Was pleasantly surprised at how good this was. It's a Ridley Scott movie with a good plot line. Ton of stars in this one and some who make just cameos. It's about a lawyer (Fassbender) who needs some money as he's getting into debt quickly and has just proposed to his hottie girlfriend (Penelope Cruz) and decides to get in with some big time drug dealers he knows for quick cash. When the drugs gets taken by a rival cartel everyone thinks it's the lawyer as he did a deal for a client in prison (Rosie Perez) whose son was in jail for speeding and he gets him off. Well the son is also the carrier of the microchip needed to start the sewage truck that holds the drugs so everyone thinks the lawyer is tied in and is hijacking his own deal.

Movie starts off slow but over the two hours the pressure mounts and mounts for this poor lawyer and how just giving a dealer 50,000 to make millions goes quickly out of control. Movie stars Brad Pitt as the insider feeding Fassbender information. Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men) as the drug dealer. Cameron Diaz as Javier's wife who is not at all innocent in any of this. Really liked the story and although not as action packed as one would think the story was very good.

Went to see this with the kids last week. Great movie. Zero talk except the voices during songs!!

Technical difficulty at the beginning of the above movie and we were reward with 2 free movie passes each.

Saturday was a crappy day so we used the free movie passes to see this movie:

We all loved this movie (Mom included this time). Not too violent, not a lot of swearing and not over the top CGI. PLUS, it had Evangeline Lilly and a really cool product placement scene with a certain phone maker and a tune by The CURE!!

Watched this week:

Meh. Yeah there was a lot of uproar by the conservative Christian types about this one. But I say, what the hell? In the first 30 seconds of the movie you can immediately see that this is a far departure from the biblical story. This is hollywood, not any sort of attempt at telling the story as it was in the original. (Note that I'm not at all claiming any sort of literal truth to the Noah/flood story... that's a whole separate issue.) Anyway, not a terrible movie in its own right, but not great either. Crowe seems to have a tendency for under-acting. I liked Watson, nice to see her in a non-Harry Potter setting, she did the best acting of the bunch IMHO. The story was kinda weak though, didn't really live up to the hype if you ignore all the bullshit controversy.

Kingsman_The_Secret_Service_poster.jpg

This one I enjoyed very much. A cool contemporary version of James Bond (which they alluded to directly in the movie). Fun movie, a bit gratuitous in the violence at times. And the very ending (pun intended) that would only appeal to MattB types, ugh, that kinda ruined it for me. But still, it was a good movie, taken in the context of the evolution of British spy movies. Some good humor (or should I say, humour) in this one.

^^ If you want to see a phenomenal Emma Watson movie I highly recommend The Perks of Being a Wallflower...

I have no idea why, not even sure how/where I was able to listen to the song, but at one point in my life I knew all the lyrics to "F*** the Police." My wife is also a big old-school rap fan, Eazy-E, Dre, Snoop, so yesterday we caught Straight Outta Compton:

It was really, really good and very interesting; not many 2.5 hour movies can hold my attention like it did. We saw it in the Dolby Cinema at AMC Prime theater so the sound was excellent with the bass shakers adding a nice touch.

The Skeleton Twins

Whoever decided to put "really funny" in large letters on this poster better have been fired, like, immediately. There are some funny lines and an entertaining lip-syncing scene, but this is definitely not a comedy. Bill Hader did a phenomenal job.

Pauly I loved "Kingsmen" and the princess had a fantastic ass. Hey a deal is a deal. Did you stick around for the credits. There's an extended scene in the tavern when he goes back to get his mom and the scene plays out just like at the beginning.

Chris - THANK YOU. This was one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. To me, kind of like a contemporary descendant of Breakfast Club. It's that good.

And yeah Emma Watson was awesome, and she does a pretty good 'Murican accent!
