Actually only the second time I've watched this one, think I enjoyed it more the second time around. What struck me tonight was how good the use of surround sound is in this live concert. Very nicely done, all the instruments were very distinct.
Random observations:
What other rock star but Joe would bring his mom on stage, in front of a packed big venue, to tell her he loves her and to wish her a happy birthday!
Having a very pleasant Sunday afternoon: kids out of the house, pork on the smoker, glass of Rowan's in hand, giving the HT its first audio-only workout I've done in a while, and giving a first listen to this:
First impressions (after 3 songs) - seems to continue further his journey into blues, which he started with the previous album (Different Shades of Blue). This one's a little "grittier" thus far, but definitely not the standard 12-bar blues format. Lots of songs co-written with James House. Has Mahalia Barnes & crew on backup vocals, which adds a lot, and I love Michael Rhodes' bass. Good stuff so far!
One of the things I like most about Joe's productions is the behind the scenes stuff he shares; it really adds to the experience to me to hear what the people in the band and production are going through when they're making these albums or concert videos. It provides a connection to the artists - and the artistry - that you just can't get when you're only listening to the finished product and don't know where it's coming from.
FYI if I were to come back in another life, it'd be as someone like Kevin Shirley. Not the front-man on whom is all the pressure, but someone behind the scenes that shapes and guides an artist, and makes sure he/she sounds absolutely as great as possible.
Ok I get irritated when people here seem to judge Joe on the basis of his vocals. But wow, ok I admit his voice was pretty damn rough in the early years... :scared-eek: He really has made a deliberate effort to improve in that regard. But still... judge Joe on the basis of his guitar, please! :handgestures-thumbup:
