What Concert Video are you listening to?

jomari said:
actually bought this for my sister, but she hasn't listened to it. I couldn't find myself double dipping when im not certain of her 'style' on this album.

anyone else have it?
The CD and concert Blu-ray are two different animals. The CD is studio-recorded. The concert is a live performance (obviously) and includes 3 or 4 Eurythmics songs that the CD does not.

thanks zing, I kinda knew about this already but I was hoping to see how her live performance would be compared to the studio cd you mentioned. some artist are great in live performances, other not.

It wasn't horrible. Truth be told, I found the concert more enjoyable than the music on the CD. That said, I was put off at the beginning when I realized not all of the cameras used to film this were HD. From a few angles you can tell the cameras were SD and you could see all sorts of noise. That was understandable and perhaps even acceptable 5, 6 or 7 years ago. Today, there's no excuse not to have every angle covered by pristine high def. To add insult to injury, even when the HD was obvious, it wasn't spectacular. So its Video Quality gets 3 stars (and that third star is a gift).

As for audio, it sounded fine. No complaints. It wasn't bad and it wasn't stellar. So let's call the Audio Quality 3 stars too.

The performance itself was also middle-of-the-road. Again, nothing bad but nothing exceptional either. Annie's got one hell of a voice, there's no denying that. But I was also put off when she tried to be a badass black bitch and "go to church". The only church she arrived at was Our Devine Sister of the Look How White I Am. Her renditions of Summertime and God Bless The Child were good, believable and enjoyable until she apparently tried to channel Tina Turner and Aretha Franklin. I had a hard time overcoming that for the rest of the show. I'll give the performance 3 stars too (and that third star is a gift).

yikes.

technical merits, are... well I guess unmerited. :happy-smileygiantred:

I was hoping that she didn't change her performance poise if we can call it that. there are certain areas some performers can do things comfortably, but others, well, aren't built for it. like a country singer going pop or something to that liking.

anyways, i'll just borrow my sisters copy. I will probably get the dvd-cd combo instead (I really didn't think id do that again)... but lets see how it goes.

thank you sir for the insight.

Buddy Rich and His Band -- The Lost West Side Story Tapes DVD

Maybe this should be posted in the jazz section... but here goes:

This is an amazing video. First, in my post-Whiplash exploration of Buddy Rich, I'm just beginning to appreciate his talent. The solo he does in the West Side Story medley is phenomenal. I'm not a drummer so I can't explain everything he does. But there's such subtlety, he does these little quiet things varying the tone of the clicks by changing where on the stick he taps the metal edge of the snare, he uses the stick (from what I can tell on the video) on the bass/kick drum at some point, he does this thing where he holds the high hat in one hand with a stick in it, and taps with the other hand... it's a blast to watch.

Considering this video was shot in 1985 (when Buddy was 67!), the PQ is really good. Yeah, it's SD but still it's a close-up view of Buddy and the whole band, with a few really cool shots from *underneath* the drum riser, straight up under the snare. Cool. And the SQ is equally good, actually a surround (4.0) recording.

There are plenty of extras, giving a glimpse into Buddy's professional and personal life, that are fascinating.

Truly a bit of history here. If anyone's even remotely interested in big band jazz and jazz drumming, you've gotta get this video.

Kickin' it old school.

Despite being on DVD, this is a stellar image, stellar audio and stellar performance.

Once again; the talent, taste, and cohesiveness of this band; and the video and audio quality of this show, just leaves me stunned. Damn I love this disk! :music-rockout: :music-rockout: :bow-blue: :bow-blue: :banana-dance: :banana-dance: :handgestures-thumbup: :handgestures-thumbup: :eek:bscene-drinkingcheers: :eek:bscene-drinkingcheers: :bow-blue: :bow-blue:

Been watching this on Palladia tonight.
Much better than the last Toto concert I have (which I unfortunately bought), it was quite obvious the vox and possibly some of the music were being played back, way too Perfect. This show is totally live, which I much more appreciate.
I'm wondering if the 2nd keyboardist on this video is Steve Porcaro; he IS credited on their latest album (he was contractually forced out of the band a couple decades ago for releasing a solo album), no real idea what he looks like anymore. He's the last living Porcaro, would be cool if he was back in the band.

Cripes. My first copy of that one was on laserdisc!

One of my favourites.

Yes Sir, it is Steve!

I am currently watching Paul McCartney & Wings - Rockshow on YouTube and loving it.

What happened to inherently talented musicians playing music on stage?

Bought this quite a while back, finally getting around to watching it. Not bad, pretty good PQ/SQ for a video from 1996. Interesting to see all these big names from back then, with some good commentary by Clapton, Guy, and (poignantly) BB King. Good tribute to SRV. Very interesting especially if you're into the history of blues.

I have some other thoughts about successive generations of blues guitarists, but... eh, not now.

Excellent concert! Styx was one of the first rock bands I got into (along with Journey) as a kid. This is an interesting show, as they do two albums - Grand Illusion and Pieces of Eight - straight through. Yeah half the band members have changed since those albums were released, and most of these guys are in their 60's now, but they can still play, and sing. I was especially impressed with Tommy Shaw. Yeah I missed DeYoung's vocals in a few songs (like Come Sail Away), but still the current lineup does a good job of it. Great PQ/SQ.

Some interesting behind-the-scenes views in the extras, mainly of the gear. Seems like you can't be a big-time rock star without your own personal tech assistant!

Yea, PaulyT, that is a real good one, I am a huge Tommy Shaw fan!

Have you ever seen this one? Let me know I can bring it with me.
